  1. Can we not just have a boring, average and non-extreme winter for once? It seems like every month at the moment needs to break records. Just my thoughts.
  2. In the North East, Kielder Water ensures we don’t have water restrictions.
  3. I think you’re right. There’s always a compensation. Look at Autumn 1976 after the hot summer - wettest on record.
  4. Just received an email from Tim Burt to say that the official max from Durham Uni Observatory for 19th July 2022 was 36.9 degC, beating the old record (32.9, 25/7/2019) by an astonishing 4.0 degC.
  5. Some climatic stations only report daily, so we won’t know until tomorrow.
  6. That reading is from a different site to the Durham Uni Observatory at Potters Bank. The AWS readings you quote are from the Geography Dept AWS. However, once the official max is in tomorrow we’ll know for sure. I expect 35-36 degC
  7. That’s the whole difficulty with Climate Change. Normal climates are replaced with new normals. Places that had unstable climates may find they now have more stable ones. Climate zones appear to be migrating poleward. That brings the climate of France to the UK.
  8. No, you’re right. 32.9 July 25th 2019 32.5 August 3rd 1990 31.9 August 2nd 1990 31.3 July 16th 1876 31.0 July 1st 2015 19th July 2022 ???
  9. The official high at Durham Uni Observatory yesterday was 32.0 degC, making it the 2nd warmest on record. Today will obliterate that.
  10. 29.9 degC in Gilesgate, Durham at 11:45am. 32.6 degC on the Durham Geog Dept Roof AWS at 11:42am
  11. 30.9 degC in Durham at 1338hrs. Sitting with my feet in a bowl of cold water.
  12. I had a low of 20.3 degC in Gilesgate, Durham. Our first ‘Tropical Night’. Goodness knows what the max will be.
  13. A few spots of rain in Durham this morning, but not enough to wet surfaces or pavements.
  14. Last night (11th/12th) was actually the 2nd warmest minimum recorded in Durham City in July. The official figure was 18.4 degC. The warmest remains the 18.9 degC from 20th July 2016. These figures may be challenged again if the forecast for Sun/Mon verifies.
  15. I think disappointingly, it won’t reach 40 degC, so i’m going for 39.7 degC somewhere in Kent on 17th
  16. I think you misunderstand. Each year has a maximum temperature. If it reached 28 degC in 2020, 30 degC in 2021 and 29 degC in 2022, then the average summer maximum would be 29 degC.
  17. Delightful Durham at 15.4C (+1.8) to 30th Rainfall 32mm (-29mm) (Deviations are from 1991-2020 means)
  18. I’ve just received my copy of ‘Durham Weather and Climate Since 1841’, which has been compiled by Tim Burt and Stephen Burt. It’s a fascinating book for anyone into weather in North East England. It’s published by Oxford University Press and is priced at £35. You can get it at Amazon.
  19. Delightful Durham now up to 14.8C to the 21st, which is +1.2C on the 91-20 average. Rainfall total is 14.8mm (current dry spell of 14 days)
  20. We don’t have metal roofs mate, just on cowsheds. There were several houses had their roofs completely blown off in the last storm a few weeks back.
