Sorry Jethro, won't be a Nightingale. They are making their way across West Africa at the moment. Arrive in England late April / May. Fairly scarce in your part of the world. Maybe it could of been a Wren ? or Chaffinch? Blackcap get often mistaken for Nightingale, they also have a wonderful song !

The famous Naturalist Gilbert White, writes about the terrible winter of 1739-40. He mentions that of terrible frosts and cold N/E winds carried on through April and May, stopping Redwings and Feidfares departing for Scandinavia until early June! Are there anymore reports of that winter? What sort of weather patterns do you think occured that year ?

Went Badger watching around the 1987 snowy period! It was a nightime magical winter wonderland The temp was -13. The Badger holes had columns of steam coming out of them, just like chimneys :o (called Huffing) Two hours later came back home Didn't see a single Badger! They were all snug underground -
Up to 49 bird species so far. the latest last week was a Firecrest! Have an ancient wood next-to my house and a farm behind. It all comes down to watching and feeding, with lots of wild birdfood to bring them in.
