yea it's the dampness. When it's 0 it's usually dry! Just feels crisp and different. I dunno. Can't explain it mate!

I get what you mean, but I still find a 10°C damp and cloudy day much warmer than a 0°C and sunny one. And I tend to find that high humidity, even at low temps, tends to make it feel warmer for me. I guess we’re all different!

Mine is on as we speak. I'm feeling chilly. 5-16c are hideous chilly temperatures where I feel most cold. Bring back 0c or skip to 20c Thanks

You mean you feel colder when it’s 10°C outside than when it’s 0°C… Whaaaaaat? 🤨🤯

  3. To be honest, with how the weather has been over the last few months and the diabolical weather we have at the moment, I can’t imagine us even getting any warm and sunny weather ever again, let alone hot weather.

I’ll guess it will probably reach about 37°C at Heathrow in a one day wonder heat spike in late July, the rest of the summer will be cool, wet and cloudy.

Your best bet for good weather is always the middle two weeks of April. I would say the start is often a redux of winter, but anything wet often comes in the last week. Not saying April is ever wet

I agree about the first week of April often being cold. Easter is often cold too. One of those regularities of the weather, like how the first week of September is often dry, sunny and warm.

Im noticing May is improving a lot. Before 2016 we had so many rubbish or mediocre Mays and since then 2018, 2020 and 2023 (Not in the East) were classics, with 2021 probably being a thing ceasing to happen. Hoping August does the same too

May 2017, 2019 and 2022 were pretty good too. May 2019 was rather cool, but it was also quite dry (and quite sunny I remember).

Horrible day today. Northerly freezing cold wind, constantly raining. The kind of conditions we can look forward to if the SSW delivers the so called cold synoptics that some are so desperate for.

Strange that. No rain there. Still cold and cloudy though, but only a bit of drizzle at most. I am usually wetter than you, must be a rain shadow effect because of the northerly wind.

I often rate May more than June as a more reliable summer month.

May is often the best month of the year in the north west. Often sunny, dry and fairly warm, while eastern areas tend to be cold and foggy thanks to easterly winds.

  5. I don’t know about anyone else but I tend to find bbc weather forecasts too pessimistic when it comes to rainfall… They almost always forecast every day to be raining here, whereas the met office app is more optimistic. Neither outlook is very inspiring though, to say the least.

Been an awfully depressing March so far, much worse than the springlike February which was great. Just cold, boring rotten low grey tupperware skies everyday and no weather to speak of.

I guess things might have been different in Sheffield but February was a washout here, and the mild days were all very cloudy/damp here, there was barely any sunshine. March while being cold and very cloudy has at least been mostly dry. At least we’ve lost the relentless rain!

  7. Just saw this on YouTube… My response? Considering we’ve just had an exceptionally spell bad spell of weather since last July, with some parts of the country, having their wettest July and December on record, yes, I think we ought to be moaning about it!

Another cold and cloudy day here, no rain though.

Yep, that's it. Final straw for me after the last 3/4 months of dross we have just had.  Will definitely be joining you in taking a Spring holiday to somewhere warm and sunny. Maybe Cyprus.

And it will be Sod’s Law that the moment you leave the UK the weather will turn warm and sunny! 😆☀️

  9.  WYorksWeather I definitely prefer the climate on the east coast to here. Much drier, much more sunshine and more temperature moderation so fewer heatwaves, fewer cold nights etc. You also get a sea breeze which is nice in summer. The only downside is the cooler springs with cold sea breezes.

Lancashire tends to be warmer than Yorkshire and the north east in an easterly wind, but Yorkshire tends to be warmer (and often sunnier) in a westerly wind, which is most of the time.

November 2015 - April 2016 was another, but we didnt really get much glorious weather to make up for it. Just a little bit in May followed by an awful June

September and October 2016 were good though (and August 2016 in the south, it was a very mixed month here though). And the winter of 2016/17 was quite dry and the Spring of 2017 was quite good. September 2016 to June 2017 was quite a nice period for weather.

interesting how some Yorkshire folk are convinced the weather is better on that side of the Pennines. I have family in Yorkshire and my experience is that it's often cooler- especially in spring.

12.7C here today so far from cold.

It got to about 10.5C here yesterday in East Lancs, which I wouldn’t consider cold for early March. I’m guessing West Yorkshire was very similar. It did feel quite chilly when I went for a late afternoon walk though. It was nice and sunny earlier today but it’s clouded over now and it’s cooler at only 8.4C.

I guess it depends on where in Manchester you are. The city centre is warmer and is relatively dry with around 800-900 mm of rain a year. But the surrounding towns like Oldham and Rochdale are a bit cooler and considerably wetter with around 1200-1300 mm of rain a year, wetter than just about anywhere in Yorkshire. As for sunshine, I would guess the city centre is a bit sunnier than the surrounding towns as well.

Generally, the weather is a lot drier on the eastern side of the Pennines, and somewhat sunnier too. There is a poster on here from Leeds who often gets drier/sunnier weather than what I’m getting. The exception is when we get a sunny easterly (usually in Spring) when west of the Pennines is warmer.

So far, May and start of June in the Southeast have been very dry and this trend has been getting worse since moving to this location nearly 40-years ago.

The chalk sub-soil responds very quickly to rainfall or lack of and the grass/lawn is a good indicator.

I used to cut the grass regularly, but now, it's a couple of cuts in May, maybe one in August then nothing until about October.

    Already, it's mainly brown.

It's a struggle having to water potted plants now and as much as I dislike doing it, I will have to go over to mains water instead of water butts.

Conditions right now are ideal drought conditions - wall to wall intense sun and a strong north-easterly wind to boot.

There is very little surface water left and I often ask people who like these conditions, where they would go if they had to find water for themselves. Answering Tesco is not an option.

Here, all the drinking water is chalk aquifer sourced. If it doesn't go in, it doesn't come out. More and more housing puts more demand on supply. Increasing supply by more pumping pulls in more pollutants like nitrates.

Fields of spring sown crops like cereals and potatoes are crying out for moisture now.

We cannot simply keep ignoring these changes or at this rate, those around in 50 to 100 years time are going to be in a parlous state.

Well.. This thread aged well! 😆 Since this thread was posted, we’ve had a wet summer, a very wet autumn, an exceptionally wet winter as well as a very wet year overall… I hope you got the rain you wanted! 😂   We desperately need a long spell of dry weather now. Amazing how things have changed over the past 9 months.

We did get a nice September and October here, and August 2016 was also pretty good in the south (it was a very mixed month here). Then the winter of 2016/17 was also quite dry, and we had a nice Spring in 2017.

I’d also like to point out that before March last year, we had a dry and sunny February, the winter was also quite dry (IIRC) and the spring, summer and autumn of 2022 were all drier than average, especially the summer. And before that, I think the winter of 2021/22 was quite dry also.. So I’d say we were probably due a wet spell. Although I agree with other it’s gone on for a way too long, we definitely need a few months of drier than average weather now.

  13. The last 8 months have been like stereotypical British weather - very cloudy, very wet, with very brief warm/hot and sunny periods. Thank goodness this isn’t the norm and our weather isn’t always like this!

I agree it’s worrying, but then imagine how worried people must have been in the summer of 1976 when we had standpipes in the street in some areas. And we’ve had long periods of cloudy and wet weather before, for example April to December 2012 was exceptionally wet, more recently October 2019 to March 2020. The weather always makes up for itself. We will get a period of high pressure dominated weather at some point. The question is when?

God knows what tourists have thought of it if they decided to visit London / UK this month. Nothing worse than trying to explore a city or traipse around the countryside in weather conditions like this.

Hmmm.. 🤔 Not sure about that… I think London tourists might like a bit of rain. ☔️ They probably expect it, after all, it’s what Britian is famous for! 😆

  15. An interesting summer update from Gavsweathervids looking at the top 10 wettest and mildest Februaries and the summers that followed (unsurprisingly, February 2024 was in the top 10 mildest and top 10 wettest on record).

Overall, quite a good signal looking at the summers following the top 10 mildest Februaries. The summers following the top 10 wettest? Not so much…

Another sunless day in Essex. Colour me shocked.

The long wait since 2015 for a sunny start to March continues.

March 2021 had a nice start here:

Yeah it's such a baffling anomaly as we've had many sunny periods in all 3 thirds of February & even the last 2 thirds of January but the first third of March? Doesn't happen! So strange & annoying.

But yes the weather does have those strange anomalies. Like how Easter is often cold and the first week of September is often warm, dry and sunny.
