  1. The wind is beginning to howl, lights starting to flicker and the wind speeds are nowhere near what's being forecast later.
  2. Wouldn't be surprised if we see further cold and snow during February and March this year.
  3. Tulloch Bridge Highlands -13.6c provisional temperature overnight.
  4. I can see both the Lecht and Glenshee being shut on Sunday due to high winds and drifting snow. Saturday is going to be manic! Hopefully you get up Friday Inland is definitely getting the goods this afternoon.
  5. Upper Deeside and Donside are expecting significant snow today and overnight. Might be delays in opening tomorrow.
  6. Snow depths have increased a fair bit from yesterday. Probably a good time to measure before the forecast rain tomorrow. At the north side of the house, where the drifting is more noticeable, it's over 30cm.
  7. Access up to the house now requires 4wd, some of the neighbours have left their cars at the bottom of the hill and walked up. Fresh snow on hard packed ice is causing issues. The lower roads are still in reasonable condition:
  8. The car was booked in for its MOT today over Lumsden and the commute was interesting. Cars struggling to get up fairly modest uphill sections. The roads around Alford and heading inland are not great. Looks like 10cm of fresh overnight, temperatures not that bad, -7c noted around Whitehouse. Looks like a busy day clearing up at the Lecht.
  9. The uninterrupted sunshine and westerly winds have fairly softened up the packed snow and ice. The central heating was last on at 0700 yet the inside temperature is 18.5c. With the onset of darkness and lower temperatures, the roads might be tricky later on.
  10. Dalwhinnie provisional temperature -14c according to the MO. UK weather: -14C temperatures with snow and ice warnings in place WWW.BBC.CO.UK Arctic air brings sub-zero temperatures to the UK, with amber and yellow warnings issued in parts.
  11. UK weather: -14C temperatures with snow and ice warnings in place WWW.BBC.CO.UK Arctic air has brought sub-zero temperatures to the UK, with numerous yellow warnings in place for Wednesday.
  12. A cold bright start, car display showing -6.5c on the commute. Further 3cm of snow overnight.
  13. The councils relaxed approached to gritting has continued today. Westhill Starbucks drive through was shut because of 3 inches of snow .
  14. That's correct although the car, was showing around -25c. The Met takes temperature measurements at 1.5 meters, while typically a cars RTD is around 300mm. That mostly explains the difference. The coldest UK temperature I've seen was back on the 4th January 2010. The car was showing-25.6c at Whitehouse Alford.
  15. Heavy wet snow kills a snowblower and anything under a foot, mine had a fit. Fortunately, the snow in 09/10 and 10/11 was powder. I've lived here 20 years and the only other times it would've come in handy would be 04/05 and 20/21. Nowadays a shovel is all you need.
  16. I bought a snowblower back in 2009 after I got fed up of shovelling snow non stop. The machine was great, it could cut a path 24" wide and was smashing through 2 feet of snow no problem at walking pace. After the winter of 2010/11 it sat gathering dust in the garage before the gardener bought it around 2016. Thinking I should have held onto it
  17. Couple of videos showing conditions at one of the high points in the valley. 20240115_132904.mp4 20240115_132123.mp4
  18. At times approaching blizzard conditions over here. Thankfully no sustained 30 mph winds or it would be chaos. 20240115_123841.mp4
  19. Beginning to regret my decision to clear the drive based on the Met Office app 20240115_102406.mp4
  20. A brighter and calmer day so far. Absolute doddle clearing the drive and paths as the snow is powder and super light. Local farmer made short work of the road although a gritter is required. With the snow in place, you'd fancy the lowest temperature of winter so far to be set over the coming days.
  21. Not much sleep thanks to the wind! Had a look outside, difficult to know if it's snowing or just snow being blown around by the wind. Snow depths are roughly the same as when I got home around 8pm last night. The Met Office app shows a risk of light snow until around 8pm today. After that, generally cold and dry until the milder weather arrives over the weekend. That doesn't tie in with the yellow warnings for snow and ice from now until Thursday. Slight drifting around parts of the house and garage. I'll measure the snow depth later but it looks around 2-3 inches.
  22. Starting to see issues locally with drifting. The commute tomorrow might be chaos.
