Last day of Summer - GET IN !!!!

Out with the hound in the half-light at 05:20 this morning, only 11c and with a beautiful autumnal mist rising off the River Stour. Sunrise not until 06:06 - a full 1hr and 20mins later than the solstice.

September next week !!! Not long now before the BBC Countryfile weathermen start mentioning: "a chance of ground frosts in some isolated Scottish glens"

That'll be heat stress not autumnal decay. Too early yet

Only another 17 days before this pathetic excuse for a summer finishes !! Hang in there....

A humid, sticky night - hammering down with rain

What a stunning morning: +8c at 6am, a heavy dew and a beautiful autumnal mist rising off the Stour valley to the east and the Meon valley to my south. I've been in the States for the last 11/12 days (work trip) so I've missed most of the harvest, though I see a few wheat fields are still up. Early morning tractors are out and turning over the OSR fields, mucking and prepping them for drilling next year's wheat/barley. Just ate my first blackberry of the season - delicious. Hawberries are turning from pink to red, early sloes are out and elderberries are filling the hedgerows. Hazelnuts and conkers - swelling nicely. Three weeks until September.....

Cycled to the top of Atherstone hill (360ft) at 05:50am this morning - a nippy 6c !!! A lovely view East down the Stour valley with just a hint of the first Autumnal mists rising off the river below me.

Overcast, cool, 12c and no wind for a change !!

Autumn's almost here if you know where to look !! Our first crop of cherries have been picked and sealed in kellner jars with vodka. The elderflower has turned to elderberry, blackberries are still green, but visible on the bramble bushes. I've got a crop of Lords 'n' Ladies in the darker corners of the upper orchard that are just starting to turn red - a great harbinger of late summer. Elsewhere: Hazelnuts are fattening up, hawthorn & blackthorn bushes are in berry (hello sloe-gin !!) but still green, Pink Lady apple trees are struggling under the weight of this year's crop already. Conkers seem to have doubled in size in a week too. Now waiting for: The Winter barley harvest, OSR harvest, then the wheat to follow. After that's safely in, it's all eyes pealed on my early morning cycle rides for the first autumnal mists in mid/late August.
