  1. That's true, I think it's definitely been better further south. Here in Exeter we've had quite a bit of sunshine and warm temperatures.
  2. Yep this month is very much just a slightly better 2019. The heat spikes were even more extreme but also more summery weather in general this month. Hoping we get a more prolonged warm spell (I'm talking 25-30 Celsius with plenty of sunshine) in August. I literally cannot remember the last very sunny August (think 2003 was the last one and I was 3 years old at the time!).
  3. Interesting how there's been only one 18°C+ CET month since 2013 (2018 at 19.3°C). I think it's only a matter of time before we have a 20°C CET month tbh.
  4. I think a lot of it comes down to climate change "sceptics" feel special going against decades of research pointing towards a conclusion. I assume you are involved in climate research? I think all we are asking is for the peer-reviewed research showing that human induced climate change isn't real. I don't think that's too much to ask for, do you? Or are we getting the tinfoil hats out for this one?
  5. Climate change is as an established scientific thing as the fact the earth is spherical.
  6. Were you saying that the Met Office are not biased towards climate change?
  7. Had quite a few days of rain here in Exeter. Not sure if it's enough though, grass is still pretty brown.
  8. Sorry I don't understand what you're saying all.
  9. This is actually a very interesting problem that a good friend of mine is working on at the Met Office. Like you say, urban environments do not present the ideal site for meteorological observations. However we do need to capture the nature of UHI, since the local "heat dome" in the planetary boundary layer can be shifted around and influence nearby stations to varying degrees. PWS are potentially very useful to capture the local climate and you can do some clever analysis of the data to improve the initialisation of NWP models.
  10. What possible mechanism could there be for an increase in greenhouse gases to not result in an increase in atmospheric temperatures? The answer is there is none. Mars also does have a greenhouse effect, however its surface pressure is around 0.6% that of Earth's and also generally receives around 40% the solar intensity that earth does. We observe global temperatures increasing as CO2 concentrations increase. More CO2 also means more water vapour (which is the principal greenhouse gas in Earth's atmosphere).

  12. Climate "skepticism" is the denial of the basic laws of physics as we understand them. If you pump more greenhouse gases (gases that interact strongly with infrared radiation) into the atmosphere you will cause a net warming to occur as the atmosphere re-equilibrates at higher equilibrium temperature (essentially energy in = energy out). Burning fossil fuels emits CO2, that CO2 doesn't just disappear! Much of it is absorbed into the oceans but a lot also finds its way into the atmosphere. If you think that pumping more CO2 doesn't cause global warming, just take a look at Venus. This is relatively straightforward stuff that you'd encounter at GCSE level.
  13. Maximum CET is currently 23.9°C which is an impressive 3.6°C above average, continuing the run of significantly warmer than average months this year.
  14. Models chopping and changing so it's anybody's guess what next month will bring. Also remember that there is no significant correlation between La Nina and cool Augusts.
  15. Yep surprisingly cold too, temperatures struggled to get much above freezing in Exeter which is unusual. I remember the huge snowflakes too!
  16. I think this month is often overlooked as an extreme month of weather. The maximum CET was a remarkable 11.5°C, which is a massive 4.9°C above the 1961-1990 average. The mean CET was a more modest 6.9°C due to the cool nights (however still 3.1°C above average). It was the second sunniest February on record and concluded the 6th sunniest and 7th warmest winter in a series to 1910. Kew Gardens recorded a remarkable 21.2°C on the 26th, a new record which is (currently) 1.5°C above the previous February (and winter) record of 19.7°C recorded at Greenwich on the 13th of February 1998. 2019 also saw the first 70°F winter temperature reading and (at the time) a new all time record of 38.7°C (comparatively cool compared to the 40°C+ we've seen just this week ).
  17. Yep I've properly acclimatised to hot weather. Came back from France on Saturday where it was 32°C+ every day to 30°C+ in Exeter. 20°C with a breeze feels decidedly chilly now!
  18. 2013 was the first year I really started taking interest in the weather. I remember 2012 being pretty miserable though. In recent years all summers have had interesting spells.
  19. Interesting the CET maximum of 37.3°C for the 19th exceeds the previous July high temperature in the UK up to 2019.
  20. Temperature extremes are being verified as we speak. No point losing sleep over it as this process takes time. 2019 for example took a couple of days.
