I seem to recall, back 'int day, raging 'discussions' (in the then 'Environment' section of the board?) as to just 'when' the UK would see its first 40C All the 'regular' climate change deniers (back then) had it occur beyond 2070 & were hissying at my "By the 2030's..... Seems we were all wrong eh? (I'm sure the site has records of such discussions?)

Model Output Discussion - Autumn arrives
Gray-Wolf replied to Cheshire Freeze's topic in Forecast Model Discussion
IIRC the forecasters looking at last summer's 'Heat-dome' over the Pacific NW 'played down' the temps the models were showing thinking them 'unbelievable' only for the Models to be proven right? By mid week we should have a better idea how things are looking,,,,,, -

Well 'Calderdale' is well north of the MetO warning so I'm planning a BBQ to force the storms north........ -

Busy old Sun recently eh? I get the feeling that this is beginning to look like a far more active cycle than many predicted? 3 more earth directed CME's yesterday alone (expected on the 31st?) & the Earth facing disc peppered with spots?

Again, I thought we were promised, repeatedly over the passed 3 decades that there'd be no 'Methane Bomb'? The Arctic Seafloor Is Degrading and Could Be a Climate Time Bomb WWW.VICE.COM Up to a trillion tons of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, may be locked away in the decaying ocean floor of a vast Arctic continental shelf.

I didn't know that in the German town I used to live in they use such to summon the firemen......18 storeys up & that sets a wailing! I live in Mytholmroyd so I've heard it both 'testing' & For real event!.......it's the slow wind down from the final wail..... then the silence that follows..... that gets me!

Here's a thought, Marine Ice Cliff Instability (MICI) has been in operation in some of the Ocean terminating Glaciers since the Noughties, how do you think switching from 'seasonal calving' to year round calving will impact loss rates? We all know Greenland is basically a below sea level basin fringed with mountains. The Glaciers draining the uplands currently take ice to the Sea but there comes a point where those Glacial Valleys allow the flooding of that inland basin by the Atlantic What happens to the Km of ice above once these breaches are ongoing? We know that current atmospheric forcings, when last the norm, saw West Antarctica ice free & Greenland 2/3rds ice free (125,000 yrs ago?) so it is not a question of 'If' we'll see massive discharge from Greenland , just a matter of 'When'?

I just don't get the 'Alarm' side of this at all? We've hotly debated the subject for decades & those taking part surely recognised the potential for HUGE methane releases as the Far North warms at its accelerated rate? Last summer saw 100F breached in the Arctic Circle, what do our newcomers think that means for the Permafrost? (& its 'cargo?) When temps again allow for rapid microbial activity what do You think happens to those km thick layers of vegetation overlying the far North? We might not have 'told You So' but we certainly asked similar Questions to those above in the 90's/noughties!

Stratosphere and Polar Vortex Watch 2020
Gray-Wolf replied to SqueakheartLW's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Exactly that! We've been seeing Lows with core pressures to rival Hurricanes central pressures! But North of us ,so far North they've impacted the winter ice formation as they rattled through? If you look at shape, position & speed of the Polar Night Jet You can see it is shifted from a central position to one more over the north of the Atlantic area? Folk with more knowledge than I can tell you what this configuration has meant for H.P. impacting us & now this run of windy lows we're in? I might be a tad early in thinking this but if the P.N.J. sits in this current position there will be a potential ozone impacts (destruction) as the sun returns as we move through Feb & also what a final warming in this position would mean for the surface weather down the line from it?- 1,801 replies
