  1.  Scorcher I do think Scotland, North and west England had a better May 2018, even 2017 was probably slightly better than 2020. The first week for me was quite warm and sunny but nothing spectacular. Temperatures around the high teens, two days I think it just scraped 20.C. Then we had a northerly blast about the 9th which while it did bring quite a lot of sunny and dry weather it was cold and we even had a couple of frosts during that time. It improved slightly by the 18th but turned a little bit more unsettled before the final week came and we had some very warm weather with temperatures for me reaching the mid 20’s, some parts of north west Scotland came close to 30.C during that spell. Let’s hope May 2024 turns out nice

  2.  Winter 2010: Never seen a such a prolonged cold and snowy winter was fantastic. Plenty sunshine in between the heavy snow.

Spring 2011: Warmest April on record and it was very dry and sunny, otherwise a forgettable year.

Spring 2012: Clutching at straws for 2012 but Spring did have that exceptionally warm, dry and sunny March and a good week of warm, sunny weather in May.

Summer 2013: Took a wee while to get going but an excellent July, warm and sunny and despite August being dull it was very dry and warm as well.

Summer 2014: Had my sunniest July on record, June despite being wet and dull was still very warm and it had a very good spell of settled weather in the middle of the month. August wasn’t a bad month either despite being unsettled.

Autumn 2015: A very dry and sunny September and a mild and dry October made a nice change. Really enjoyed that very warm spell at the end of September going into October.

Summer 2016: Again clutching at straws because no season in 2016 was especially good but the first half of June wasn’t too bad and the second half of August was excellent, let down by a very poor second half of June and most of July was cool and unsettled.

Spring 2017: A very mild and sunny March, a record breaking dry April and a warm and sunny May made an excellent spring. I recorded 31 days of no measurable rainfall between the 11th April-12th May.

Summer 2018: Need I say more? May-July that year was absolutely glorious, will probably be a long, long time before we see a summer that great again.

Winter 2019: A very sunny winter, record breaking dry and sunny January, a very good cold snap towards the end of January beginning of February, and then a taste of mid spring at the end of February. Cracking season.

  3. Two excellent May’s that both happened pretty recently but if you had to pick what one would you say was better?

For me I would say they were both very close but 2018 just edges it out as being slightly better for myself. 2020 was sunnier but 2018 was both slightly warmer and drier. My memories of each are:

2018: Actaully began quite cold and unsettled under a northerly, it wasn’t until the 5th that the weather started to improve. Come the 6th it was very warm reaching the low 20’s and the sun was shining. It wasn’t to last however and come the 9th things briefly turned cooler and unsettled once again. However it was by the 12th that the weather settled down and it remained like that for the whole month and well into June. Then come the final week the temperature exceeded 20.C every day from the 23rd-31st. Never experienced such prolonged heat in May like it. It was absolutely brilliant. There was virtually no rain in the second half as well.

2020 was another cracking May but I think the north fared a little bit worse off than the south. It was cooler than 2018 although not by much despite being sunnier. Rainfall was close to the same however but it was more spread out and there was only a couple of really hot days unlike 2018 which was generally consistently very warm. I can recall getting a couple of notably cold northerly blasts during this month with then a few days either side of them reaching the high teens. I only recorded 8 days with a high of above 20.C in May 2020, 2018 recorded 12 days above 20.C.

  4. Don’t remember much about that summer but looking back at my records 2002 was definitely a poor summer for me especially during June and July. However unlike some recent poor summers there was still some decent spells of useable weather. Most of June was pretty poor but I do remember quite a warm and summery spell probably around the 22nd but I’m not too sure. The first half of July 2002 was absolutely shocking, probably the worst spell of July weather until 2012, but around midmonth it was very pleasant and quite warm, there must of been another cool and wet spell after then before it improved again before the months close. July 2002 was the coolest, wettest and dullest July I had until 2012. Locally as well it was probably the wettest since 1988. August 2002 was rather wet and unsettled but I do remember it being quite a warm month. I remember the 11th being a very wet day especially. A similar month to August 2004.

definitely a summer in the top 5 worst but I would say 2007, 2012 and 2020 were worse.

  5. My memories

2010 - Was actually quite a pleasant August for me. Generally dry and quite settled but mainly cool, quite similar to August 2007 some very low minima with many nights regularly falling well into single figures.

2011 - A dreadful month, cool, wet and very dull. It was the coolest August since 1993 locally, wettest since 2004 although 2020 was wetter and dullest on record. I can only recall one spell of nice weather and that would’ve been around the 19th-24th. Other than that it was just Atlantic rubbish, the trees actually started to turn autumnal by around the 27th which is very early.

2012 - Unsettled and wet but with still a few spells of nice weather, strangely though the majority of the nice weather was over the weekends of the month. It was the warmest August for me since 2006 although temperatures weren’t actually that much higher than average. Another wet one but not as wet as 2011 and sunshine was close to average. Quite cold at the months end with minima getting close to record low. A brilliant month compared to the previous June and July.

2013 - A very dry month although it was dull and strangely quite warm again. It was the driest August since 2003 and it was also the warmest since 2004. Weather wise though there wasn’t too much heat most days were around 19.C-22.C so perfectly pleasant but nothing unusual. The weather was generally quite overcast though with the occasional sunny day.

2014 - Unsettled and quite cool but still with some useable weather especially in the first and third weeks. Rainfall was only just above average (although northern Scotland it was record breaking wet) and sunshine was around average too. Can’t recall any prolonged spells of unsettled or nice weather, just unsettled mostly.

2015 - A sunny month sunniest since 2003, and there wasn’t a sunnier one until 2022. Temperatures and rainfall were both close to average. I remember the last week being especially nice and it was probably one of the longest spells of nice weather in August. The rest of the month was generally typical August weather; a showery day, the odd warmer and sunnier day and then a cool and wet day.

2016 - Generally dry and settled with some good warm weather in the second half. The first half was quite unsettled following on after July and the second week was noticeably cold after that though it was generally dry and sunny.

2017 - Abysmal month, cool, wet and dull and also quite windy, the highest maximum here was only 22.1.C. There was some very wet weather towards the months close and it felt like early October most of the time with only brief sunnier days.

2018 - Coming after such an amazing May, June and July this August was pretty much bang average. It was slightly drier and cooler than average, the only warm weather occurred in the first week and it turned noticeably cooler by the 7th. I remember the 25th recording a minimum of just 3.8.C and the Sunday that follows there was a maximum of just 12.1.C. Not a total write off but still quite a disappointing month.

2019 - Unsettled and quite wet but the majority of the rain actually fell during the three days between the 8th-10th. The rest of the month was generally quite pleasant with some warm sunny days mixed in with a few cooler days. Had it of not been for the very wet spell in the second week it would’ve been a very pleasant month. The 10th was a very strange day as it had some glorious warm sunshine mixed in with some of the most torrential downpours I had ever seen.

Best August for me would’ve had to be a tie either between 2013 and 2016 as they were both generally settled and warm.

    Worst is 2011 hands down.

  6.  Summer8906 my records from both summers. 2010 had slightly warmer maxima than 2009 but lower minima, 2010 was slightly wetter and 2009 was slightly sunnier. Both ended up very similar overall.

June 2010 was a really good month being warmer, drier and sunnier the average the maxima was especially high.

    July 2010 was a terrible summer month but at least it wasn’t exceptionally dull 2002, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2015, 2020 were a lot duller

August 2010 was generally quite pleasant aside from a few unsettled days but there was a number of very cool nights with minima regularly dipping well into single figures.

  7. Who remembers the awful May of 2021? For me it was by far the worst May I have ever experienced. A constant month of cold, wet, windy and dull weather with only very brief spells of settled weather. For me it was coldest, wettest and dullest May on record. My main memories of the month was on the 1st May, the pubs had just reopened in Scotland after Covid but we could only drink outside, it was absolutely lashing it down with rain, was only 7.C and had near enough gale force winds. Looking back think we were insane to go to those measures just to have a pint. I also remember it snowing on the May Day bank holiday and maxima of just 5.C. The rest of the month followed a repeat of mainly wet and unseasonably cold conditions with maxima barely reaching 10.C on a few days. A side from a brief spell midmonth and the saving grace was the end of the month just in time for the bank holiday where it was absolutely glorious with temperatures in the low 20’s and set us up nicely for the summer. A month I hope we don’t repeat any time soon felt like a winter month.

  8. Good memories

2021 was very pleasant here, beautiful sunshine but not very warm think it only reached 12/13.C but both dawned with very frosty mornings like the whole of April pretty much.

2019 I remember being absolutely glorious, Easter Sunday reached 21.8.C here and then Easter Monday was 20.6.C. The Saturday prior to that was even warmer. Absolutely amazing spell of weather.

2017, 2015 and 2009 were warm and sunny ones.

2011 I want to say was also warm and sunny but I don’t remember what the weather was like that year.

2008 we had the heaviest snow of the winter during Easter 2008 😂

    Bad memories

2018 We were down visiting family in London and Kent during Easter 2018 and it’s the first time I’ve ever felt truly cold down south in the spring. Good Friday and the Saturday was also very wet. Easter Sunday was dull and dry but very windy and the easterly wind made it feel raw.

2016 it was cold and wet

2013 it was dry and sunny but the easterly winds made it feel like winter

Other Easter’s I just remember being typical April days.

  9. An excellent month, some absolutely cracking weather particularly in the second week with many days in the mid to high 20’s, coming off the back of a very good July it rounded off a excellent summer, summer 2022 for me was actually warmer than 2006. Even though I recorded slightly above rainfall it didn’t put a damper on the month at all as most the rain was in brief heavy showers. August 2022 was probably the only excellent August I have had since 2003. Goes to show you how unlucky most of us were with August weather. I would say summer 2022 was one of the best summers on record. Probably just as good as 2018 which I didn’t think it could beat. Summer 2021 and 2022 were both brilliant summers.

  10.  Summerlover2006 Overall it was a poor summer but like you say it did improve somewhat after the end of July. As I’ve said in other topics, June 2007 was by far my dullest June I’ve recorded with just 74 hours of sunshine, even the next dullest June which was 2012 managed 102 hours of sunshine. It was very wet but 2002 and 2017 were both wetter. The start of June was quite warm and humid but still mostly cloudy and the highest maximum was only 21.9.C on the 9th. After that it was very wet, cool and remained extremely dull with maxima barely getting into the mid teens.

July 2007 was another cool and wet month but sunshine was average. There was a few nice days thrown in during the month but there was quite a lot of cool, dull weather thrown in as well as a few thundery days. I do recall quite a pleasant spell during midmonth where it was warm and sunny. Around the 20th where England had the massive floods I just recall heavy rain and I don’t think there was any significant flooding at all round my area. Maybe the odd road closure and that was it. After that I think the last week was generally pretty settled and warmer think I reached 24.C on the 27th but that’s pretty low for July.

August 2007 was a pretty average month I think, there was a lot more pleasant weather than the previous months but overall I wouldn’t say it was a good month as it was still quite cool. There was average sunshine but rainfall was slightly below average. The hottest day was the 24th with a high of 24.8.C which was the highest temperature of 2007. In fact 2007 holds the record of the lowest highest maximum temperature I’ve recorded. Not a bad month overall but could’ve been better.

2007 is definitely in the top three of worst summers I’ve had, but looking back at my records summer 2012 was a lot wetter and duller.

  11.  Don summer 2008 had probably the worst August for me until 2020. Horrible month, don’t recall much else from that summer though, only things I can really remember is a warm spell in the last week in July and June being noticeably windy.

  12. Another summer topic, and another one that seemed very different area to area. It gets quite a bad rep summer 2009 but I have quite a lot of good memories from it.

June started  very warm and sunny coming off the back of a very warm end to May. It didn’t last long though and by the 5th the weather had drastically changed to a cold and wet pattern. From about the 11th the weather did improve again but it remained quite unsettled until the 22nd however unlike other unsettled Junes there wasn’t much rainfall. The final week of June brought some very warm, dry and sunny weather again and this lasted well until the first week in July, from the 22nd-5th the temperature exceeded 22.C every day. The highest temperature was on the 30th with a maximum of 27.3.C bringing the warmest June day since 2003. The month ended up being slightly warmer, drier and sunnier.

July began exactly the same as June started and finished with a peak of the heat arriving on the 2nd with a maximum of 29.4.C this made it the highest temperature of 2009, also the hottest July day since 2006 and there wasn’t a higher temperature until July 2013. It remained warm and sunny until the 5th and then the weather turned more unsettled and rainy. However I still have very good memories of July 2009 despite the rainfall and thunderstorms. The difference being unlike other wet summer months where the rain has been light and the weather has generally been dull and cool. July 2009 was still pretty sunny and wasn’t cool on many days I recorded a very respectable maxima of 20.5.C and sunshine was slightly above average. I remember many days starting very sunny  and dry, followed by a late afternoon thunderstorm or downpour that lasted an hour before the weather cleared up leaving a warm and sunny evening. There was a brief spell from the 15th-20th where it was cool, dull and wet. July 2009 was actually the third sunniest July of the 2000’s for me and the Julys of 2002, 2007 and 2008 were significantly wetter.

August followed by being quite a disappointing month but it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as 2008. The month started quite cool and unsettled before turning more settled and sunny with some warm days. The second half turned more unsettled but still quite warm before it turned cool again. The final days saw a marked improvement and the September that followed was quite a pleasant month.

Looking at met office stats I believe summer 2009 was a absolute abysmal summer in the west, particularly for Wales, north west England and south west Scotland but across the south east it looks to be slightly drier and sunnier than average and across northern Scotland while still being wet it looks to be one of the sunniest summers there on record.

Whats your memories on that season?

  13.  Sun Chaser I think summer 2017 was a rather poor summer overall. June was dreadful we missed out on the heatwave the best I could do was three days off warm sunshine and dry weather and even then the maximum temperature never rose above 25.C. Either side of that the weather was cold, wet and windy. In fact June 2017 is my wettest June on record for nearly 30 years and in Edinburgh it was the wettest June in over 100 years. July wasn’t overly bad but it was generally cool, strangely though we had most the bad weather in the first half whereas the second half was actually quite pleasant with a few warm days. August was dire the highest maximum I recorded was only 22.4.C and it was generally dull and wet although nowhere near as bad as June. Even the September that followed was also poor.

  14. It was a cracking spell of weather and did make lockdown slightly bearable. I don’t recall much in March 2020 though, it was pretty average I think there was a spell of mild, sunny weather literally just before lockdown but other than that it was a typical March. April 2020 was a brilliant month, warm, sunny and dry with only the odd showery and cooler day. It was the sunniest April on record locally for me but then that was beat by April 2021. While April 2020 was warm there wasn’t any exceptionally or prolonged heat for me, I didn’t even hit 20.C but most days were around 17-18.C so it was glorious. May 2020 was another fantastic month although I do think May 2018 was slightly better, there was a good warm spell in the first week but there was a northerly blast just after which did bring some notably cold weather for a few days, after the 18th though the weather was generally very warm, dry and sunny with many days getting into the low 20’s, reaching 25.C on a few days towards then end of the month.

Definitely the best spring I can remember, will probably not see another one like it for some time.
