  1. to add to the above

The areas covered by the warning in Wales are: Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Isle of Anglesey, Powys and Wrexham. The long-range forecast for the UK from the Met Office says that the cold air established across northern parts of the country will "extend to all parts" next weekend.

It adds: "As it does so there is a risk of some significant snowfall for parts of the UK, perhaps central areas most prone to this but this aspect is very uncertain at this stage. Across the north cold throughout with snow showers tending to focus on northeastern areas while for the far south the period may start of with some rain and near average temperatures, before the cold air reaches here by the start of next week.

  2. The hunt is on definitely on after BBC weather forecast and latest Met Office below

    Friday 2 Feb - Sunday 11 Feb

Early February will continue changeable, with spells of wet and windy weather for many parts of the UK. The northwest is likely to see the heaviest and most frequent or most persistent rain, while the southeast will tend to be drier overall. At the start of this period, very mild but rather cloudy conditions are expected widely, with the best of the sunshine to the east of high ground. With time, however, westerly winds are increasingly likely to turn more northwesterly on average, leading to a greater likelihood of colder and brighter interludes within the generally mild, unsettled theme, especially across the north. These would bring an increased chance of wintry weather, with overnight frost and fog accompanying any more settled spells.

Updated: 14:00 (UTC) on Sun 28 Jan 2024

    Monday 12 Feb - Monday 26 Feb

At first, changeable conditions continue to be most likely, with the wettest and windiest weather often in the north and northwest. It is more likely to be drier further southeast, although some wet and windy spells are still possible here. Through mid-February there is an increasing likelihood of more settled conditions or winds favouring a northerly component. This would increase the chance of some colder spells, with a greater likelihood of wintry conditions at times.

  3. The chase starts again

    Friday 9 Feb - Friday 23 Feb

Through the middle of February, changeable conditions are most likely with the wettest and windiest conditions in the north and northwest. It is likely to be drier further southeast, although some wet and windy spells are still possible here. Later in the month there is an increasing likelihood of winds from the north or east, which will increase the chance of some colder spells and perhaps snow.

I think we can expect somewhere in the most exposed areas to record over 90mph at some point.  Hope my shed can take it….! 🤞

Anyone got any recommendations on a decent weather station?  I have a mobile alerts technoline base station. Over the years the wind and temp elements have failed.  Do I just buy extra parts or go for something new?

This the one i get the information from in my area also good reviews on this company plenty of options and price ranges www.weathershop.co.uk

Met Office warns of band of snow causing 'increasing risk' of disruption from end of the week

The Met Office has predicted that the cold weather could remain well into February

The Met Office and other forecasters have warned that the next coming days could see a "band of snow" and a cold spell which could last for weeks. The majority of forecasters have said that the UK is set to reach sub-zero temperatures next week, and the Met Office has predicted that the cold weather could remain well into February, North Wales Live has reported.

It comes as the Met Office has predicted that global factors could see more cold and dry conditions in the UK this month. Such factors include a strong El Niño – the naturally occurring warming of the Pacific Ocean – and a phenomenon known as a sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) where the upper stratosphere rapidly gets warmer, often causing high pressure that leads to colder weather in the northern hemisphere.

If this is to happen, it could lead to "potentially disruptive" snow across much of Wales and England, the forecaster has said. Different models have predicted different impacts, which range from forecasts of 18cm of snow in parts of mid Wales, while there is a chance of 42cm of snow across the southern parts of Wales - according to the ECMWF weather model. For the latest Welsh news delivered to your inbox sign up to our newsletter

Meanwhile in England, there is set to be heavy falls too. However, if the band of low pressure does not move as far north as currently predicted, the impact may be felt further south, or there may be little or no snow at all.

In its updated medium-range UK forecast for January 14-23, the Met Office said: "There is risk of unsettled weather pushing in from the south through this period, which could lead to a band of snow and sleet where it meets the colder air across the country.

"Confidence is low with regards to the timing of the arrival of any such disturbance, but there is an increasing risk of something potentially disruptive at some point in this period. Widespread frosts continue to be a feature by night, with a risk of ice in places."

The ECMWF weather model is forecasting widespread snow with depths of up to 42cm in South Wales by Friday, January 19 (Image: WXCharts)

More moderate snow depths (cm) are being forecast by the GFS model for Thursday, January 18. (Image: WXCharts)

Temperatures are likely to ease upwards temporarily but is dependent on if and when the low front arrives. Currently, projections show the front moving north on Wednesday, January 20, which will drop rain but in its turn produce snow when it hits the cold.

Most weather modes are showing that the low will pull away to herald a return to colder air, according to North Wales Live. However, there are various predictions on temperatures - some outputs show the mercury falling to -10C over the snowfields of Wales and England, while others indicate the cold may not be as extreme as initially feared, hitting lows of -4C in Wales early next week.

The Met Office predicts that high pressure will remain in charge for the rest of January and into February. And by potentially bringing colder conditions, it leaves open the possibility for further snow. Looking ahead, in its UK forecast for Wednesday, January 24 to February 7, the Met Office has said: "Through this period, the greatest likelihood is that high pressure will remain the more dominant influence on the weather. Most likely (this will be) centred somewhere to the northwest of the UK, with winds from the north or north-east perhaps more frequent than usual, with generally reduced amounts of precipitation.

"There is an increased chance, compared to normal, of cold conditions along with the associated impacts from low temperatures. Even within a predominantly more settled pattern, there is still a chance that frontal systems could move in from the west or southwest at times.

"While they would likely bring an interlude of slightly milder, more unsettled weather, for a time, this would also introduce a risk of snow and ice where it meets the colder air in place across the UK."

Yellow and amber cold-health alerts are in place across parts of England this week. On Wednesday, January 10, according to the Met Office, temperatures are at 1C in Cardiff and Swansea, 2C in Wrexham, Aberystwyth, Carmarthen, Monmouth and Newtown, while it is 0C in areas such as Caernarfon and St David's.

  7. Thursday 11 Jan - Saturday 20 Jan

High pressure will remain in charge at first, whilst sitting to the north or northwest of the UK. Many areas will often be dry if rather cloudy, however occasional light rain or drizzle is likely, especially on some east-facing hills. The best of any sunshine in sheltered western and perhaps southern areas and still rather chilly for most. Towards mid-month, the high will likely decline or reorientate itself to the west or northwest of the UK, potentially allowing colder air with snow showers to filter south across the UK and/or for frontal systems to approach from the southwest. The latter scenario would also bring the potential for significant snow and also perhaps some heavy rain to parts of the south. Either way a more unsettled outlook towards mid-month looks probable.

    Sunday 21 Jan - Sunday 4 Feb

Through this period, compared to normal, there is an increased chance of colder conditions along with the associated impacts from low temperatures, ice and snow. Whilst colder weather is more likely to dominate, there is also the possibility of further frontal systems at least encroaching from the west or southwest, bringing the potential for more widespread snow to parts of the UK as they butt up against any cold air in place. These would also increase the likelihood of wetter conditions redeveloping, at least in the south, where occasional milder interludes are also most likely.

    UK long range weather forecast

    Wednesday 10 Jan - Friday 19 Jan

High pressure will remain in charge through the first part of this period, whilst sitting to the north or northwest of the UK. This means a fair amount of dry weather for the majority of the country, with variable cloud and some sunny spells. Still the chance of a few showers, perhaps wintry at first, feeding into some eastern coasts. Still on the cold side too, though perhaps less so than the preceding couple of days, with reduced wind chill in the south. Into the following week, as the high is forecast to build further to the west, there is an increasing likelihood of northerly winds developing, introducing colder air once more. With this comes the risk of snow showers, especially around windward coasts along with overnight frost and ice.
