Doing my final exams at Agri College in King Street Aberdeen about four floors up being distracted by powdery snow showers coming in off the North Sea. An abiding memory At home they had huge problems with cows with cracked teats because of the cold and had to cream them every day.

Two weeks later I was home baling hay in 80 degree F heat and we were then able to make hay all summer without having to race to get bales in as every day was dry and we sold a lot of hay at prices it took 40 years to reach again.  People with 30 acres of tatties bought up whole farms for cash and lots of new buidings went up too. Crops took a pasting with drought but not as bad as England so at least my first year farming was  a good one with scarcity driving up prices(My Father had passed away the previous spring )and  our one full time employee carried on with help from me every weekend in my last year at college.

My dad said the same here in North Yorkshire on their dairy farm,I wasn't born til 80. Seems remarkable these days that you could get snow as late as June. Summer 1995 was my best memory no rain all summer til September cows fed on straw and molasses as grass was brown, would love another summer like that now I'm out of it !!!

  2. Wouldn't worry about these precipitation charts yet, from my experience little features pop up out of nowhere nearer the time, so will be plenty of surprises I'm sure. Can always remember one around 2009 or 10 where there was a small area of snow sitting off the coast circling on the rain today radar one Sunday afternoon, it then moved inland and give Stamford Bridge(where I was at the time) a right dumping for a couple of hours. Wasn't forecasted either! Good luck guys ???☃️

Great to see all your snow photos this morning (and many more on Twitter) but all we could manage here was a bit of ice and a few well scattered flakes on the odd car roof... not even enough to call it a dusting! Temp now up to 4.0c.

Looking ahead, Thursday morning looks like the next time period for possible snow. As others have mentioned, it becomes marginal as higher T850s and >528 dam filters south. Models also quite inconsistent on both when, where and how much precipitation there’ll be. I’d say western half of North Yorks, West and South Yorks best place to be as things stand (no surprises there!!).

Some great snow pictures out there! Especially yours Cold Winter

The proper snow forecasts for us to the east of the region never seem to get any closer, will be end of January at this rate.

This was a couple of miles inland near Amble, taken yesterday. The photo doesnt do it justice yes those are trees nearly covered in snow, the drifting at some points really was 10 feet plus.

It certainly looked like that traveling up! Ive never seen anything like it,was fab to look at but sure the farmers have a different view.

Kudos to the folks who have kept the main roads open!

  5. Sick of seeing charts that show great wintry potential at day 10,think we need to bring ceefax back, then we can stare at Lerwick on the 5 day forecasts again for downward temp trends ,used to always come off for us down the N Yorks coast (currently snowstarved this winter?)

Great forum guys, ill stick to reading over posting. ?
