  1. Tornado hits Chertsey and Shepperton damaging roofs and felling trees - live updates - Get Surrey WWW.GETSURREY.CO.UK Several residents say their property has been damaged Edit: No idea why when trying to reply it keeps quoting someone eleses post from a few days ago.
  2. So far here in St Leonards on Sea the worst of the weather has yet to reach us. It's been mild and dry for much of the day with sporadic rain arriving late in the evening. Last week I bought myself an Amazon Echo Show 8 and it's great for listening to music and worldwide radio stations etc but when it comes to local weather news and alerts it's not something I would consider relying on by a long stretch. It's been regularly showing me a Flood Alert for the Hastings area for the last few days, but doesn't go into any detail at all, even when asked. When asked again this evening all it tells me is there is a " Flood alert in effect" in St Leonards on Sea. I think I'll stick to the music options for now ( which are very good in all fairness )
  3. I enjoyed the brief interlude from the rain this afternoon by spending a couple of hours on the seafront at St Leonards on Sea. The rain has now returned and the forecast for the next few days looks grim
  4. We seem to be stuck under a rain making 'Sussex Streamer' here today, it's rained incessantly since mid morning here in the Hastings area. 10.4mm so far recorded at nearby Herstmonceux and still pouring down. I can only speak for my local area and taking the reports from the Herstmoneux site, they seem to confirm what others have been posting regarding the rainfall in this neck of the woods in the last few months. The Herstmoncuex rainfall stats as I have noted them : September : 94.2mm. 1981-2010 average: 65.3mm ** October: 130.6mm. 1981-2010 average: 107.7mm November: 189.0mm. 1981-2010 average: 101.0mm ** September started off fairly dry and average but the period between 22nd-30th reported 85.8mm. December so far..60.8mm and more to come looking at the forecasts.
  5. Incessant rain since about mid morning here in St Leonards on Sea. It really is becoming tiresome now.
  6. After this mornings brief hailstorm here the weather quitened down a tad so I headed for my favoured spot in Hastings, Rock a Nore, in time for this afternoons high tide. Despite not being particularly windy and the sea not being as rough as it has been in the last week or so it was still worth an hour or two of my time to just sit and watch the waves.
  7. I can only go by the reports from my nearest Weathercast station at Herstmoncuex ( 12 miles away ) but according to those reports these are the figures: Recorded Sunshine this month: 50.94 Hours 1981-2010 average for this month: 70.4 Hours Number of days with zero sunshine recorded this month: 12 Total rainfall for this month: 210.4 mm 1981-2010 average for this month: 101.0 mm Days with recorded rainfall above 1.0 mm this month: 20 1981-2010 average above 1.0 mm for this month: 12 The stats seem to confirm that overall it's been a pretty awful month in this neck of the woods. The last couple of days have at least seen a bit more in the way of sunshine and less rainfall but there's now a nagging easterly wind dragging the 'feel like' temperature down.
  8. Depressingly low daytime light levels for the 6th consecutive day here in the Hastings area. Indoor lights on all day and a good many street lights came on around 3pm. Add in some torrential downpours this afternoon and evening and frankly I'm sick and tired of this thoroughly dismal autumn.
  9. Indeed SB. 5 consecutive days here in St Leonards on Sea with zero sunshine and copious amounts of drizzle interspersed with heavy showers. This evening saw some of the heaviest rainfall during that time. The only 'saving grace' is that the temperature has reached double figures for the last 4 days so at least I can turn the heating off for now. I can't be the only person who finds this type of weather depressing surely ?
  10. The rain didn't reach us here until late aftenoon/early evening but has certainly made up for it since, now approaching 20mm's locally but according to the radar it should be easing off soon. Rye Bonfire and Firework display might have been a bit of washout though. Cuckmere Haven has been flooded for the last few weeks but it's a natural flood plain so nature just doing it's job in that respect.
  11. Thanks for that Bluebell, and well done to all involved. I can't get around as much as I would like these days but Alexandra Park is practically on my doorstep and what a fantastic park it is, a real credit to the local council in these times of cutbacks. Back on topic, a sunny start to the day gave way to frequent showers this afternoon and evening, some of which looked quite promising convection wise. All this rain is becoming a bit tiresome now though. As much as I dislike cold weather I would happily take a change to a more settled spell, even if it means the temperatures dropping.
  12. I was hoping my attempt to post some photos/video of Rock a Nore, Hastings on Saturday November 2nd would work but failed once again. I really am useless with this technology thing. One last try :
  13. The Met Office did issue a yellow weather warning for our region. Did you not see it ?
  14. It must have been quite extreme for them to shut down Ravenside but having spent a couple of hours at Rock-a-Nore this afternoon I can well believe it. Iv'e been a regular vistor to the Hastings area for about 10 years and moved down here 5 years ago. I've seen a few storms here in that time but today was right up there with some of the most noteable storms. Enjoy your bevvy
  15. Trying to post some photo's and video I took of the 'storm which wasn't named' here in Hastings today but not having any success with that and for some reason I can't shift the quote from Freeze when posting ?
  16. Worthing was certainly amongst the hardest hit in our region with a peak gust of 81mph and mean wind speeds at or close to 60mph for around 4 hours. The highest official report I can see so far was for The Needles at 109mph. ( Not sure of source but it has been confirmed as an official figure on another website ). From the tip of Cornwall right into East Sussex and Kent winds along the South Coast have gusted 60-90mph and have done for several hours. Rock-a-Nore in Hastings was a bit lively this afternoon and the high tide shortly after 2pm coincided with some of the strongest winds and heaviest rainfall here. Quite a storm, and like others I'm a bit surprised it wasn't named and that an amber warning wasn't issued for coastal areas at least.
  17. I have a feeling this storm might be named in the next few hours. Currently only a yellow weather warning from the Met Office for our region.
  18. You might just be glad you are not here given some of the forecasts I've seen for this area.
  19. Having kept an eye on the forecasts I was right in thinking yesterday would be the ideal day to cut the grass for hopefully the last time until next spring. Conditions yesterday were perfect for it here in the Hastings area. Today is depressingly dark, damp and dismal. Light levels have been incredibly low all day and by 4pm street lights were coming on. Heavy rain now falling. The forecast for tomorrow is of some concern with some suggesting winds gusting 60-70+ mph along this stretch of the South Coast.
  20. Just popping in to say hello as I'm currently spending a couple of days in Gosport and surrounds. The journey down from St Leonards-on-Sea on Friday afternoon was not quite as bad as I was expecting weatherwise but my goodness, the traffic once I crossed the border into Hampshire is something I haven't really experienced since moving down to East Sussex from a North West London suburb 5 years ago. Anyway, not wishing to ramble on too much it's been a fairly pleasant day here with the temperature on my car thermometer reading 18c at one point but it's all changed this evening. I don't envy my Son and his family making the overnight ferry crossing from Portsmouth to St Malo this evening. I've just stepped outside my hotel and it's a bit breezy to say the least, with horizontal rain at times. It's good to be here though. All the best.
  21. I'm in Gosport tonight and certainly don't envy my Son and his family onboard the overnight Portsmouth to St Malo ferry crossing. Blowing a gale here and near horizontal rain. That following what has been a fairly mixed day here. Some bright spells earlier and temperature on my car thermometer reading 18c at one point. It rapidly went downhill late afernoon though.
  22. My memory is not all it should be these days but I do keep records as best I can and I take the readings from the nearby Herstmonceux Weathercast site. I distinctly recall cutting my grass on September 21st, having looked at the forecast and thinking it might be the last chance I get for a while. It was a perfect day with the temperature reaching 23.9 locally under clear blue skies. The turnaround from that day has been quite remarkable in this neck of the woods. In the last 28 days just one day without rainfall and a total so far during that period of 158mm's .....over 6 inches which is quite unusual here in East Sussex though I stand to be corrected.
  23. Woken up at 3.30am by the sound of the wind and rain hammering against the window here in St Leonards on Sea. It didn't last long but must have been quite something to wake me up. Another torrential shower just passing now as I type.
