  1. *Stormforce~beka* It's nae often I whinge about weather warnings, Beka, but, in this instance of easterly gales, I'll make an exception. . .
  2. Metwatch I was an arch-sceptic until the mid-1990s when I studied climatology, and nothing opens the mind more than learning. Someone -- I can't recall who -- once said that the best defence against logic is ignorance. . . Because I don't understand string theory means that string theory is nonsense, right? So, now, I'm more interested in CC's likely effects than whether or not it's real. . .
  3. Global temperatures are rising and GHGs are responsible. It's been the same for 4.5 billion years. And it isn't going to change any time soon?
  4. Wold Topper But there is no 'alternative articulate' argument, WT?
  5. It's never been GW per se that's the real threat (at non-catastrophic rates, we'd have plenty of time in which to adapt) it's the rate of change (dt/dT?) that we need to address. . . But even that seems to fall on deaf ears:
  6. Aye, the attitude to AGW has changed, and for two reasons IMO: 1) Deniers have run out of alternative scenarios, such as undersea volcanoes, solar cycles, Milankovitch cycles etc. cannot possibly account for the current rate of warming, and making daft claims about carbonic acid not causing oceanic acidification have all turned out to be damp squibs. Quelle surprise! 2) Said Deniers have now turned the dark arts toward influencing government policy. After all being demonstrably out of their depth, when it comes to science, hardly benefits their cause. . .
  7. The Jarrow and Aldermaston Marches are my personal favourites. . .
  8. Well, hydrogen power is still in its early days, but there is a glimmer of hope:
  9. raz.org.rain They never show any data that would either support or refute their hypotheses. . .
  10. Glaswegianblizzard Well, if there's one thing from Scotland that's no better than its English equivalent, it's the Daily Express!
  11. ANYWEATHER Please show us some data, anyweather. . .
  12. ANYWEATHER You can say that about any day in any year: if this, if that = whatever we want. But facts are facts.
  13. I doubt that very much, but you'll believe whatever you want to believe, eh?
  14. @Snowyowl9: Not that pathetic argument: It's snowing today so all the evidence for AGW (it's actually incontrovertible) is rubbish? Oh dear, some folks simply cannot apprehend the problem!
  15. But, haven't all this year's SSWs amounted to nothing; just like 2019's SSW amounted to nothing? IMO, something (AGW?) is outcompeting the usual teleconnective drivers. . .
  16. @Rain All Night: No, not in the least!
  17. @SollyOlly: I grew up with nothing but one coal fire, and my bedroom was freezing; especially in 1963. And the filth in the air was something to behold. I'm glad I haven't experienced green-brown fog since the 1960s. Up in Scotland (1988-2010) it was cold, but at least the fog was clean and white.
  18. @SollyOlly: Just like when everyday folks were scared of electric lighting -- but, more strangely, not by the gas lights that emitted toxic fumes? And I do recall the days of coal gas.
  19. @Scuba steve: I know, they are immensly beautiful structures that we all treasure. Unless, of course, electricity lines could be run underground; which new ones could be? Tall naked girls? Well, that's a different matter altogether!
  20. @Dami: I've never, in all my many years, grasped the point of 'feels like' temperatures: to me, 15C with a breeze feels like 15C with a breeze, and not 11C. . . I do get the risks from hypothermia, of course; but that's not the same thing, IMO? And now I'm back in Times New Roman!
