  1. you would absolutely love the autumn on the Canadian prairies there is something magical about this season that I have not experienced anywhere else..by mid August you can sense the approach of the coming winter everything bursts into autumnal colours regardless of the weather..so by the beginning of September trees are awash with the colours yellow, orange and red..the grass has stop growing and you get some fabulous sunrises and sunsets as the evenings and mornings grow cooler.
  2. Interestingly in Canada they classify hot days as anything 30c and above. Perversely cold days are classified as below -30c..so a place like Calgary gets 3-6 hot days a year and 3-6 cold days a year.
  3. But look how far above average the winter season temperatures are on those graphs..i think they are more concerning and noteworthy than summer temperatures being marginally below normal...all seasons need to be below average to see any significant rebound in artic ice.
  4. When I lived in Edmonton recess for kids was always outside unless the temperature fell below -23c
  5. Move to Alberta its exactly as you describe..apart from winters last for 6 months
  6. no surprise there with winter being the favourite...trouble is a UK winter is pretty shabby and a poor excuse for a winter season really
  7. I know..however Keith is stating the value is 1m above the mean when it is below the mean
  8. either I am reading this wrong or you are but the value posted is below the 1981-2010 mean which is the dotted line in the middle not above?
  9. my point is you wouldn't do without heating or a boiler in winter if you were freezing
  10. buy an ac unit problem solved..its not rocket science
  11. If you want to be PC it should be renamed 'native American' summer
  12. I enjoyed Aug 2006 after the unrelenting heat of July 2006 Aug was a refreshing release..cloudy and much cooler but relatively dry.
  13. Having just moved back from Calgary it does get 'hot' in summer just that its a dry heat as humidity is often very low...summer 2012 was a hot summer with temperatures often into the 28-34c range but was very doable as it didn't come with high humidity..some days you could get the its +30c but fells like 26c scenario which you would never ever see here.
  14. I have never heard of anyone in North America describing 26c as too cold?...I was in NYC one August when the temperature was 25c and this was described as perfection!
  15. And people in North America would be neither impressed by a British Heat wave or British cold spell
  16. Not for me Aug 1997 comes in as the 2nd hottest Aug after 1995 for me maybe it is forgotten as it is so close to 1995 that many people when remembering the months merge both months as 1995 and many of the vents that happened in 1997 get confused with 1995.
  17. saw a couple of reports of Hearne bay reaching 33c (91f) this afternoon
  18. all depends on humidity and wind-chill +32c is fine in a dry heat but very uncomfortable in high humidity -30c can be ok with no wind but can literally be painful with any kind of breeze Highest temperatures I have experienced are +40c in Dubai and +36c in Singapore with 100% humidity Lowest Temperature is -42c in Edmonton and -50c with wind-chill again in Edmonton.
  19. If you struggle with heat and sleeping etc just by an AC unit..no different to buying a heater in the winter..i could quite happily live in a hot climate as long as I had AC..They are not too expensive to buy or to run and tbh in this country you would not need to use one very much...I will miss mine in the upcoming hot spell but I will cope ok.
  20. on a nostalgia trip and the week I got married is missing...1st September 1996 is it available ?
  21. I have never seen it in a forecast over here eg tomorrow will be 28c but will feel like 35c
  22. when It comes to summer time I used to find the humidex or heat index invaluable in my day to day life when I lived in North America..so I wondered why it is not used widely here?..we use windchill esp in winter for how cold it actually feels but not the humidex for how warm it actually feels..so any reason why not? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humidex
  23. remember this well the day before the start of Euro 96...driving up to London for the Eng v Switz game ran through a string of storms
