1. Yeah, even managed a short snow flurry here down the coast a short while ago!
2. Hi Billy, I'm about a mile in from the coast, so pretty close to it. I think there's a reasonable chance of further showers as we go through today although I don't think there will be anything particularly notable in terms of snow. Wouldn't mind being wrong though!
3. Another dull, raw and damp day here in East Suffolk with occasional rain showers, although there was some hail in the last one! Temperature at 2.5C, but the wind making it feel much colder.
4. I really wouldn't expect much snow from now on in...it looks like staying over the near continent. The 18z NAE also suggests this: http://expert.weatheronline.co.uk/daten/proficharts/en/nae/2010/12/22/basis18/ukuk/rsum/10122418_2218.gif Forgive me for asking, but are you from Beccles? I ask because Beccles isn't really on the coast, and it certainly isn't in Norfolk as your location says! :smiliz19:
5. Thanks for the updates, very interesting...definitely worth keeping a close eye on things over the coming days.
6. I don't take an awful lot of notice of the radar over East Anglia nowadays to be honest, so many times it rains when there's nothing showing over my area, or it rains harder than what is being shown. Paul told me there was going to be an upgrade to the radar covering East Anglia last year, but this doesn't seem to have happened because the radar coverage for this area is quite frankly abysmal.
7. Reports coming in of an earth tremor affecting parts of northwest England a short while ago. Some of my friends text me saying there houses were shaking...anyone here experience it? http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/usc0000sdh.php
8. Given the competition is said to have cost Walker's around £1.5m I doubt they will run it again in a hurry! Still, my family will be having a nice Christmas after counting up the winnings from our own individual accounts combined.
9. I heard thunder on Saturday morning as well, but don't recall anything on Friday night. I do know that the lights were flickering quite a bit on Friday night, this seemed strange to me as the severe gales were the night before! Whether that has anything to do with it I don't know. EDIT, just found this on the Lancashire Evening Post website, from the comments section: http://www.lep.co.uk/news/morning_after_the_stormy_night_before_1_2756860
10.
Glad you are enjoying it too! Argh, your timetable is far nicer than mine. My spring timetable is far worse - I have 4 9am starts!! I don't think I will be having a reading week, got my first set of Maths and Physics problem sheets though - nothing too difficult though so far but I am absolutely certain it will crank up a few gears. Haven't done a great deal of Meteorology yet, mainly learning about the different layers of the atmosphere and basic satellite imagery analysis. Half of my flat are Midlanders so I don't feel quite so isolated . I'm so glad I'm not self catered, I am eating far better than a lot of them by the sounds of it. We don't get evening meals at weekends though so we can sample the takeaway cuisines of Reading . Getting up for breakfast hasn't been easy at times though, despite the fact that breakfast is on until midday!!
My 2nd semester time table is even nicer than the 1st semester, 6 hours of lectures a week, a 5 day weekend, and a fieldtrip to the Isle of Wight for one week in April! Just using this first year to get back into writing essays, etc. as its been 10 years since I last wrote an essay! I'm sure you are eating much better than all of us who are self catering! We do tend to take in turns to cook a meal for everyone to share, so that helps. I think most students would struggle to get up for breakfast before midday!! Have a great time mate!
11. Remember it well, even though it was 23 years ago! I was in east Suffolk at the time and had never heard wind like it or seen damage like it, it was an unbelievable night. The evening was so warm and quiet then in the early hours you could hear the roar of the wind approaching and then the storm hit during the early hours. It was mainly the far southeast that was hit badly, the coasts of Suffolk, Essex, Kent and Sussex:
12. Hi Nick, Great to see you have settled in well and enjoying uni life! I'm now about to start Week 6 (!) here and have a reading week coming up for Week 7, so will be halfway through my first term already! Loving it here though, the course I'm doing has been good and fairly basic so far but I am sure it will get harder very soon. Got a nice timetable too - two 9am starts and a 4 day weekend Flatmates are great, and meeting loads of new people on the course so don't regret giving up home and job for uni! You're lucky to have catered accomodation! Plenty of my flatmates could do with that judging by the food they burn haha! Paul
13. Haven't had my heating on yet in my hall, in a south facing room so the sun has kept it warm.
14. There will be some cold weather. There will be some mild weather. There will be some sunshine. There will be some rain.
15. Jim Bacon runs his own weather company now, Weatherquest. He is a fantastic man and a top forecaster. I certainly agree with Gavin P about the last of the old school being filtered out of the BBC national forecasts, very, very sad and disappointing to see. I wonder how long it will be before a major weather event hits the country and then the media bemoan the lack of experienced forecasters!
16. It is a great shame about this as all three are highly respected and knowledgable meteorologists. Personally I haven't watched the BBC national forecasts since they changed to those awful, awful graphics in 2005, because it was clear then where the future for television weather forecasts on the BBC was headed IMO. I am not sure how it will save the BBC money if the men in question are moved into backroom "management roles" though? But then what do I know! When you look back at archive weather forecasts, it is so sad to see the sorry state of affairs today: http://www2.tv-ark.org.uk/weather/bbc.html
17. Winter has arrived in Svalbard: http://www.svein-nordahl.com/svalbard/webcam/webcam_LYB.php
18. I'm still waiting for the September snow in Aberdeen......
19. Good grief, the ramping has started early this year! Heaven help the admins/mods on here when/if we end up with a mild winter as there seems to be some very high expectations around this year. Yes, there are some favourable signs for another colder winter, but its very early days yet.

A Level Results And Uni!

Congratulations Nick!!
21. Had a cracking little storm this afternoon, with hail and thunder!
22. Yes, had a pretty squally spell of weather here a short while ago with torrential rain, gusty winds and almost continous thunder and lightning! Not checked rainfall total yet, but a lot of localised flash flooding around here. An impressive period of weather for sure! Radar shows the core of the storm passed overhead this area, and it certainly seemed it!
23. Tell me about it! Hate this part of the world in the spring with these dratted north-easterlies. Seems that plenty of aircraft are reporting ash: One hopes that safety isn't being comprised by the airlines.
