  1. In Abisko, Sweden, the auroras were so bright they could be seen at sunrise:
  2. CANNIBAL CME SPARKS LOW LATITUDE AURORAS: Auroras in California? Believe it. On Nov. 4th, the glow of a strong (G3) geomagnetic storm spread almost to Los Angeles. Aurora chaser Hongming Zheng took this picture just outside Lincoln CA at latitude +39N:
  3. AURORAS OVER ICELAND: Last night (Oct. 30th) on the south coast of Iceland, Christopher Mathews was waiting for the CME to arrive when, suddenly, the sky filled with auroras:
  4. Thurrock, Southend and Essex have all received an amber warning for rain starting from 9pm ending at 2 am. I do not remember ever having an amber warning for rain in Thurrock as this is the first time.
  5. CME IMPACT SPARKS GEOMAGNETIC STORM: As predicted, a CME hit Earth's magnetic field on Oct. 12th. The impact at approximately 02:30 UT sparked a G2-class geomagnetic storm. Auroras spread across northern Europe, Iceland, Canada, and multiple northern-tier US states. In Maine, the auroras were so bright, meteorologist James Sinko was able to photograph them using nothing more than his mobile phone. Across the border in Saskatchewan, Frank Lang used an actual camera:
  6. The indoor temperature is 19C and even double glazing and extra clothing I still felt cold, so I put on my heating slightly up to 19.5C.
  7. AURORAS BEFORE THE STORM: The storm hasn't started yet, but auroras are already dancing over Iceland. Last night, a minor geomagnetic disturbance rippled over the island nation where Christopher Mathews was waiting with his camera. Lights Over Lapland has a full catalogue of exciting adventures in Abisko National Park, Sweden! Check out our daytime and evening activities and book your adventure! UPDATED GEOMAGNETIC STORM FORECAST: NOAA forecasters say there is a 45% chance of G1 to G2-class geomagnetic storms today, Sept. 27th, in response to a passing CME. If a storm materializes, bright auroras can be expected around the Arctic Circle with a chance for sightings in northern-tier US states. Aurora alerts: SMS Text. AURORAS BEFORE THE STORM: The storm hasn't started yet, but auroras are already dancing over Iceland. Last night, a minor geomagnetic disturbance rippled over the island nation where Christopher Mathews was waiting with his camera: "I shot this image of the aurora over my house in southern Iceland at about 11 pm," says Mathews. "This is a 2.5 second exposure taken at ISO 2000, with an aperture of f/2.0. "
  8. SOLAR SECTOR BOUNDARY CROSSING: Yesterday, Earth passed through a fold in the heliospheric current sheet--a vast wavy structure in interplanetary space separating regions of opposite magnetic polarity. Researchers call this a "solar sector boundary crossing" (SSBC), and here is what it did. "Wave after wave of bright green auroras danced over the Salt River in Wood Buffalo National Park," says photographer John David McKinnon of Alberta, Canada. "The show peaked around ~08:20 UTC on Sept. 22nd." The display was also photographed from hot tubs in Iceland and moonlit landscapes in Scandinavia. This sets the stage for a possible CME impact on Sept. 23th, which could add its effect to that of the SSBC, sparking even brighter auroras around the Arctic Circle.

  10. THE AFTERGLOW OF A 'WEAK' CME: A CME hit Earth's magnetic field on Sept. 17th at ~0200 UT. The impact was very weak, lifting the solar wind speed by a measly 40 km/s. Despite such a feeble blow, the CME managed to stir geomagnetic activity hours later when Earth encountered magnetic fields in the CME's wake. Marketa Murray sends this picture from Fairbanks, Alaska:

  12. TWILIGHT AURORAS: It's that time of year. Inside the Arctic Circle, the summer sun is receding as autumn approaches. With this transition comes a rare mixture of colors: twilight blue and aurora green. Rayann Elzein photographed the mash-up over Utsjoki, Finland on Sept. 10th:
  13. "At 2.30 a.m. on Sept. 8th, I woke up and had a look outside," says photographer Thomas Kast of Oulu, Finland. "Wowsers, nearly the whole sky was full of auroras! Got the camera and ran onto the front yard. This is a photo from the back of my camera, when a strong green band rose quickly and brightened the night sky."
  14. RELUCTANTLY RED AURORAS: It's not easy for Earth's atmosphere to make red auroras. Even long-time Arctic photographers and tour guides rarely see them. Yet, on Sept. 3rd, there they were. and also SEPTEMBER KICKS OFF AURORA SEASON: Studies by NASA show that September is one of the best months of the year for auroras. So far so good. On Sept. 1st, skies over Alaska erupted in colour.

  16. I have not put on the heating on yet but I am sleeping underneath a quilt and a weighted blanket. The indoor temperature would have to down to 17C. Even though I have double glazing, I still feel the cold.
  17. Photographer Martin Male caught the aurora's reflection from the still waters of Pontoon Lake. "It was a nice, warm and calm night," he says. "Clouds drifting by added to the scene."
  18. AURORAS OVER YELLOWKNIFE: It was just before midnight on Aug. 25th when a crack opened in Earth's magnetic field. Solar wind poured through the gap, fueling auroras over Yellowknife, Canada:
