  1. Living in Thurrock is frustrating as the weather forecasts and weather warnings are based on a weather station 30 miles away that is 15 miles North of Southend.

The nearest weather station was in Greenhithe which was 10 miles away.  Now that has been removed, Met Office weather forecasts are very inaccurate as they are for a coastal area.  Thurrock should have got an amber warning as I am only 6 miles away from Kent.  The wind was much stronger than forecasted as the Met Office has not got any data for my particular area!

  2. 1 hour ago, Metwatch said:

It seems like the beautiful Sycamore tree at Sycamore Gap has been cruely chopped down.

Quite upsetting for me as I only recently discovered about it earlier this month and would have loved to see it in person.

This has effected me too as I am have a deep connection with trees and woods.  I am from Northumberland and I lived in Ashington.

  3. There has been light winds and no rain today. Thurrock and the rest of the SE England desperately need. I do not think the wind exceeded 10-14 miles per hour.

  4. I looked on the Wunderground weather website for the weather forecast tomorrow.  It says that there will be 70% chance of rain.  I would be more confident of rain, if the precipitation rate was 80% and higher.  I find that if the percentage is lower than 80%, there is little chance of it happening. I hope that the forecast changes to a higher percentage.

  5. I remember the heatwave of 1976 very clearly as I was living in Plaistow and was on my summer break starting from 23rd June when I was 12 years of age attending the Cumberland Road Comprehensive school  and by the time it ended in September when the rains came, I would be 13 years of age as my birthday was at the end of July.  I remember the standpipes where queues of people would come to go and get water.

Now whenever there is a heatwave, I have flashbacks of standpipes in the street and so it makes me extra careful with my water use, except for drinking water. It happened to me last years.

I am now counting the days when there will be a cool down and hopefully it will be done with thunder and lightning or a deep low from the Atlantic.

  6. I live on the bottom floor of  a blocked of maisonette flats that were built in the 1950's.  I have both blackout blinds and blackout curtains in both my bedroom and living room.  I got the blackout blinds and curtains to block out the street light.  The bedroom  blackout blinds and curtains was because the street light stopped me sleeping. I now have double glazed windows in the front and back of my flats.

I am glad I am got them and say they have 3 purposes, one to to block out street light, one to keep me warm in winter (as all the maisonette flats have high ceilings) and to keep cool in summer.

  7. Here are some photos of snow in my back garden. I don't think the main roads have been gritted by the council in Thurrock.  The Europe and Asia snow map from the uscicentre.gov is not showing any snow for Southern England.
