  1. Yes it could be a complete washout but isn't. Looks more benign to me. But for those looking for heatwave conditions I think the next 10-14 days could be challenging. Thankfully I'm not a huge fan of heat so this suits me fine as it just eats away at this month and we get gradually closer to the final Summer month and then Autumn. And anyway we're having normal Summer weather. Average temps, cloud & drizzle are the climatic norms in our region in July. Certainly not regular plumes of stifling hot air from Africa (although some deluded people on the mod thread think otherwise). Spain and the Sahara desert can keep it.
  2. The only silver lining to all the rain is the reservoirs really do need it after the extremely dry Spring.
  3. Yes that part of California around San Francisco is comfortable in the Summer. The only natural issue there is the earthquakes though. Just never know if there's going to be a huge one.
  4. Indeed a vile day. People in Winter coats out & about. You'd never think it was hot not so long ago. We do seem to having these extreme swings in weather lately. Never seems to be in-between. It's either one extreme or the other.
  5. Indeed. When you scroll through the years of weather history for London (Heathrow) it's pretty rare for them to have a max temp below 20 during the entirety of July & August. Up here in NW England that just isn't the case. If we had what London has every year we would call that an amazing Summer. But that's just normal to Londoners.
  6. Absolute monster of a downpour in progress here with hail. A rumble of thunder too.
  7. Turning hot again out there. The radar looks dead to the south. Hopefully as the afternoon progresses we'll see some development.
  8. Yes it's not that humid really. Although tomorrow looks more so with instability & chances of thunderstorms.
  9. UK weather: Highest ever UV levels predicted today before thunderstorms end heatwave NEWS.SKY.COM After the UK sweltered on its hottest day of the year, temperatures are expected to reach as high as 34C (93.2F)...
  10. Yes not been so great today. My app says the cloud should properly break up & clear to sunny from 4 but it's a bit late by then...more than half the day gone. Tomorrow looks a better prospect for topping up the vitamin d. Should be no interruptions.
  11. Just looked at a couple of other sources & they are different on them as well. So who knows what to believe. But the original point is I still can't recall seeing a 9 in this country. Like someone else quoted a snippet from the Met Office saying an 8 only occurs on "exceptional" days. I've noticed the UV has been a bit higher than normal through the Spring as well.
  12. According to the Met Office Edmonton is a 7 today & not any higher all week? And I believe they take into account elevation too. So I'd be very surprised if you got to 10 given we're now around the solstice. It got as high as that in California when I worked there but that's not surprising given it was as far south as Spain.
  13. Yes a UV of 9 across Cornwall this week. This one below is for Penzance. Can't recall this happening before? Or if it has it's got to be extremely rare. Because even Cornwall is pretty far north compared to the Mediterranean.
  14. I think light levels are still good throughout August. It's only really when the nights become longer than the days in September when it really hits home that Winter is on it's way. Before then though 12 hours daylight is still pretty good to get things done out and about.
  15. Confidence rising now for a significant warm up this week. A hot 27 or 28C possible across southern parts of the region on Wednesday. How long this heat lasts who knows. Thursday at the least still looks very warm across the southern part of the region.
  16. Now hearing big rumbles. Looks very dark over the Pennines.
  17. Radar certainly more interesting now here in the east of the region. Lovely looking storms about to cross the Pennines. Hopefully they'll keep they're intensity.
  18. Yes it wasn't a great decade for them. I think it was around 2015 or thereabouts when we had a night of brilliant thunderstorms. Seemed to go on for a few hours well into the early hours, certainly was worth losing sleep over. But overall apart from that nothing else really stood out for severe thunderstorms.
  19. Anyone think that line of storms in the Midlands will make it up to us?
  20. Here we go again. Lots of lightning to my south and big rumbles of thunder.
  21. It just shows how only a few miles can make a huge difference in these situations. We just seemed to scrape into the torrential rain & frequent thunder here even had some hail too. Relative in Denshaw said it was bone dry!
  22. Looking at the radar that is one intense storm to the w/sw of Manchester. Not heading here unfortunately. Another chance tomorrow though. Kevin looks well placed right now.
  23. This year really has been dire for anything interesting weather wise. Yet again missing any thunderstorms. Although have to say I wouldn't wish the flooding on anyone.
  24. We seem to be in between bands here. Looks like we're escaping the storms just like yesterday. Most of the action to the north and west.
