If there was no mild sector would of been looking close to 1ft of snow😡

If there was no mild sector, there wouldn't have been any precipitation at all though, it was caused by a warm front.

Another 2 degrees lower in the 850's though around -4/-5, I reckon it would have stayed as snow for Central and Eastern areas.

Lampost watching for another couple of days though and some feisty Atlantic weather off the back of the renewed PV in Canada stirring some super storms up.

Yes. Even Newtownards has a good bit of showery activity for Monday.

I think sea surface temperatures are still above average for this time of year. That coupled with the low 850 temperatures may give more beef to the showers?

I don't think anyone has said at any point that a SSW guarantees cold weather, and I don't think anyone has indicated that they are 100% that the upcoming SSW is bringing cold weather. Infact the only people who have mentioned anything of the sort are the people trying to constantly remind everyone else that it doesn't guarantee cold, despite it being pretty common knowledge through-out.

I think it's safe to say that 99% of the thread followers are fully aware that it doesn't guarantee cold, but I think the discussion over the past few days especially has been really interesting and there's always, or should always be a good hype around a SSW at this stage especially as no-one knows how it will play out and that's where the interest and excitement comes from.

People are not here for the guarantee of cold .... otherwise nobody would be here 🤷‍♂️

We're here to enjoy the ride of seeing how it plays, a SSW doesn't guarantee cold and snow, but it gives us a ticket to the raffle and that's where the thrill of the chase comes in.

If you want spring and warmth, maybe best not to hang your hat on it for at least another few weeks until the effects of the SSW are laid out a bit clearer.

If it doesn't guarantee anything, then why is it even of benefit to discuss at this stage....until the effects are "laid out a bit clearer"?

Just seems to me like an SSW is really just a pattern breaker, there are lots of those in different aspects of meteorology. Telling me the weather pattern is going to change in 2-3 weeks? Hardly wizardry on an island like ours.

  4. Just thought I would let you all know that Geoff Waters passed away (Geoff W) https://www.netweather.tv/forum/profile/3212-geoffw/

He posted in here from time to time and was from my home town of Bangor in County Down.

I only found out because my Mum mentioned about one of her old clients in a disability care home had died last week and she mentioned the name. I befreinded him on social media platforms also but haven't really used them in a long time.

RIP Geoff and I hope we made your time on this earth full of wonder and excitement here on Netweather.

I read somewhere that when dew points temperatures are high, snow will melt quicker than in direct sunlight.

At 5pm yesterday my air temp was 2C and snow was mostly intact, by 9pm snow was all gone and temp was 4-5C with very little rainfall.

Very true. In direct sunlight snow acts as a reflector of heat radiation. Surface temperature and dew points have a much bigger impact.
