  1. I can understand that reasoning entirely. However, apart from running costs there is also, believe it or not, health reasons why some wouldn’t turn to A/C. Those of us with Sjogren’s are advised to avoid air conditioning as it worsens the condition, which is uncomfortable enough at times
  2. I thought you felt this thread was pointless anyway. Unfortunately British men in the heat never ever look like Adonis. If they did heat would be more bearable now wouldn’t it.
  3. As @Dami says, start your own “love to sweat like a pig and look like a red turkey c*ck in the heat” thread And you could start your own thread too and buzz off out of ours, just a polite idea? Absolutely agree. They can’t wait to troll can they. Cats not melting yet, not hot enough thankfully. My cats are tough . In fact Rupert has slept in his warm duffle bag bed this afternoon.
  4. the key here is we are not accustomed or adapted (yet) in this country to deal with extremely high temperatures. Yes, eventually we will all evolve but we won’t overnight!! Just to clarify cats can sometimes start over heating at 100F (37.7c) or wet bulb 95F. So yes my foster cats housed in the pen in extreme temperatures have to be monitored for over heating. The same can be said for extremely cold weather as, despite a wall heater, it can be too cold overnight in there for them (i.e. 2010 temperatures). To prove this I spent time sponging one cat down with cool water August 2020 during a period of extreme heat as she was showing signs of overheating. Thankfully sponging her down worked as she had 3 small kittens to look after. Dog owners will also struggle to walk their pets in such extreme heat as pavements etc can burn paws. Our local vets often put out warnings about walking dogs during extreme heat. Horses and possibly other field animals will also struggle in such extreme temperatures. My old horse hated the heat and I made sure he was bought inside away from the heat and flies. I see the model thread is going into a frenzy as (thank god) the extreme temperatures, at least for the moment, are being moderated - long may that downward trend continue to more reasonable temperature outcomes for my preference at least. BTW not sure what the highlighted bit means? Is this the heat haters club thread or have I stumbled into the wrong thread to pass comment about the possible extreme heat and the problems it may cause me managing my own household? I fully understand some are wanting extremely hot temperatures. Each to their own preference of course but not all of us wish to be barbecued alive.
  5. Completely agree. I am dreading it too. I have foster cats in a converted summerhouse that acts as a pen and extreme heat may present me with issues. I open up the double doors, one window (where they can’t get out) and put umbrellas up to keep the sun off them as much as possible. However, in such very high temperatures it may get too hot inside for them so I may have to move them out during an afternoon. Problem is - where will I put them Guess my Sunflowers will do well though!
  6. Doesn’t look too bad around these parts until next Monday, which is when the heat looks to be descending upon us
  7. This chappie will be happy the hotter it gets though…..the only one in the household I hasten to add! He’ll be charging around trying to bonk everything ? He has a plant pot he chases around after.
  8. Hoping the heat around these parts won’t be too much or we at least retain significant amounts of cloud cover. With the hot weather around the corner I thought I had better fill the drinking bowl with water I have for the deer and badgers just over the garden fence. This is one of the reasons why I dislike and dread hot dry weather as this is the wooded area at the bottom of my garden fence. It is very overgrown this year but managed to beat a path to the water bowl. There is public right of way at the bottom of the ridge and I’m always aware of the fire risk when its so dry.
  9. Is this up and coming heatwave a plume as in possible thundery weather within it or is it a sun scorching burn everything to a frazzle dry heat (i.e. full sun all day every day)? I thought I’d seen someone refer to a plume at some point in the model thread, which I thought was thundery weather, so I’m confused a little.
  10. Yes, we are on the countdown I’m starting to prepare the hibernation bunker
  11. Sounds ideal along with beautiful surroundings. I think if I moved anywhere now it would be to Scotland.
  12. …..and, to add insult to injury, this wind has blown quite a huge number of developing apples off my tree
  13. The cooler weather is much appreciated by myself and the other members of the household but I have to say this persistent wind is beginning to grind my gears somewhat have to say. My poor hanging baskets are having a hard time of it .
  14. Wolves, around my part of Wolves I should clarify, hasn’t had many, if any, storms since 2020. In fact I think we had the odd rumble last summer but nothing worthy of note at all. The last humdinger we had was August 2020, which was quite a spectacular storm. I’m not convinced we will get any later today either.
  15. Roll on tomorrow, can’t come quick enough and should be 15 degrees cooler. To add insult to injury I’m having a nightmare trying to keep sun umbrellas stable over the pen with the pesky wind that has picked up. Sadly, looks like the heat may start building again during next week?
  16. Can feel the temperature starting to ratchet up Netweather has us down for cloud tomorrow shutting the sun out so that should hopefully help a little in stopping temperatures rise too much. Just got to get through Friday, which looks uncomfortable. Looks like a wet weekend coming up. That should water the garden nicely so I can plant my sunflowers up at long last
  17. I’m sure you will be very happy in the moans thread with a few others who seem to complain constantly its too cold. Its a good idea to split the preferences to be fair as it will avoid any tension. We can moan in here its too hot, regardless how long any hot spells last and heat lovers can moan in the other thread about it needing to be hot, hot and hotter
  18. Yes, I dislike the brightness of overhead sun relentlessly blaring down on me but I think that may be due to my Sjogrens. ? Another dislike of mine with heat and sun is it brings the flies out I do my best to keep them out of the house but the odd blighter sneaks in somehow. Its a straight race as to who gets it first between me with the fly swatter or Prudie who eats them Living on the edge of woodland and farmland we do get a few horrid flies. If there are sheep on the farmland we get horrid green ones.
  19. Nope. We were the same working in a private hospital. Upstairs offices had no aircon and the windows only opened an inch or so. To make matters worse we were still expected to wear a stuffy old uniform.
  20. I’ll join you in here @Dami. Don’t mind contending with heat for a couple of days at a time if we get a good old thunderstorm but that doesn’t look all that promising for my region. I’ve just had the customary fight to get the sun umbrella up and stabilised over the cat pen to keep the worst of the sun off them.
  21. Is the storm potential still around for Friday/Saturday or is it looking more like a lame duck end to the hot spell? There have been knowledgable opinions on both of these scenarios over the last few days. I do enjoy the spectacle of a good storm although admit to hiding under the bed clothes if it starts to get a little violent We had little or no thunder last summer to speak of and nothing at all so far this year.
  22. It is the inconsistency I find annoying. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve had to run out and rescue the washing due to a quick sharp shower, sharp enough to “wet” the washing that was almost dry. Ten minutes later it’s stopped raining and looking much brighter and I have to peg it all out again only to have to fetch it back in again as it rains yet again not long after!
  23. Despite just scraping into the 30% chance of storms, absolutely nothing storm wise happened around these parts again.
