  1. Absolutely zero rain here, still waiting for just one drop to fall 😔  It is feeling a little fresher for now at least but sincerely hope we get meaningful rain soon.  I can see I’m going to lose a number of plants/bushes/trees 😢

It's actually raining here at the moment!  Only light spits and spots but it's so nice to feel some rain on my face for once.  I'll stay out in it as long as I can (or until it stops altogether!).

I’m over in Penn and we’ve had nothing here, unless I missed it of course.

Hydrangeas (the usual ‘mop head’ varieties) hate extreme heat and drought, I hope you can manage to save them. They are lovely plants. Have you tried some American species that are better in sun and warmth, like the grandiflora ones and the oak leaved varieties? I have two hydrangea lantanas called ‘White Lady’, they’re rather nice.

Thanks, I am not sure what type it is to be honest although I am lugging watering cans up 3 flights of steps in the garden to it as the hose doesn’t quite reach that far up the garden.  Mine is a white hydrangea too and a little like yours.  I also have a climbing one up one side of my pergola.  I am aware also some plants are not keen on too much tap water either so we really do need some decent rain it has to be said.

I generally like hot weather, however this has just been a little relentless even for me,  especially at night where I just cant cool the house ( upstairs anyway)...so I really want to see the back of this ( as do my cats)....the likelihood of getting any storms round here is virtually zero, but several days of cool and wet weather would be bliss...and to top all this off the fridge freezer packed up yesterday!

Oh no, what a nightmare for you, they are having to work overtime in this heat.  Can any of your neighbours help out with taking your freezer stuff?  My cats are fed up too.  I have 5 of my own, 3 with health conditions and 2 charity fosters in the garden cat pen, which I am trying to keep as cool as I can - not easy.

When I'm reading stuff, I can usually discern a wry comment from a jibe; so, I think one or two of you might be taking peeps' words somewhat differently to how they were intended?:drunk-emoji:

Anyway, both Northolt and RAF Mildenhall reached 32C by 11am! Methinks the heat is to blame any fractiousness?💦

It is certainly beginning to drag my mood down I have to say and I am having to work hard to keep my temper in check.  Everything is twice as hard and tiring in this heat.  I’m exhausted and now getting worried with it all.  Its the lack of rain that’s really irritating me.  2020 had some horrid hot spells but we did get storms and plenty of rain to dampen everything down.

I do understand it. I’ve been looking after my grandparents and offering them every bit of support I have in dealing with this weather. It isn’t everyone’s cup of tea I know, and it’s been too hot even for me when we had 37-40c. However, I’m being careful what I wish for, and highlighting how remarkable this summer has been.

I am wishing for, at the very least,  a week of endless drab rain as you put it - my preference.  I don’t want the expense of replacing plants and bushes which are now showing signs of dying and, more importantly,  being surrounded by tinder dry fields and woodland I want that soaked through as quickly as possible.  So, sorry, no I will not be enjoying these devastating heat and dry conditions.  Its a right royal pain in the derriere as far as I am concerned.

  7. Another evil daystar dominated day looming.  What a dogs breath of a summer this is turning out to be.  Just visited a few weather sites to see what is forecast for my area over the next few days and I see the early indications of rain, with or without thunderstorms, have all but disappeared.  Zero rain now being forecast and at this rate I can see me losing many garden plants not to mention the continued worry of wildfire.   Just wish summer would oblige and disappear up its own derriere now.

So, so fed up with this heat now - it was just perfect outdoors at 8am with gorgeous blue sky and 20C.  I wish it could stay like that all day.  I feel totally drained of energy now and just want it to stop!

Yes, so am I, its just getting so very irritating now.  I have said to my mum this morning, if these are our summers of the future every year, I will seriously have to think about moving somewhere much cooler.   I can’t function in this heat day in and day out.

Is the heat driving you to vodka Ed? 🤣

I 'm just sitting in the garden in the shade...flaked out and just had yoghurt with fresh fruit...dont work when temp over 30...actually feels like work just keeping all the plants watered 🥵

Bloomin hard work isn’t it.  I’m down to rescuing plants now other than watering pots and hanging baskets, the  hydrangeas don’t seem to do well in drought conditions.   If these are the summers of the future then I feel hanging baskets and bedding plants in pots will be a thing of the past for me.   To add insult to injury my neighbours have been away all week amd I’ve been trying to keep their garden going as well ☹️

No, the vodka's driving me to the heat! Anyone else getting sick of the sight of cloudless skies!🤣

Sick of seeing the evil daystar sun at the moment, wish it would b*gger off now for at least a year 😳

I am not glorifying the fire at all, but here's one of the many pics people took :

If hating extreme heat could be summed up in one pic i think it could be this.

Problem is they take hold so very very quickly when everywhere is so parched.  Could smell burning again this morning when I went out into the garden.  It was like burning rubber though so I assume it was related to an industrial source.

    Morning all.

Quick update. Thankfully the fire service managed to contain the fire and everyone was ok. 🙂

So pleased all is okay now.  Sitting here having my breakfast and I can  see the evil daystar just peeking above the trees grinning as it knows it is set to give us another satans breath of a day.

Don't I know it.  This damned heat has spiralled my Asthma and I'm now on daily steroids.

Sorry hear your not well and hope you are soon feeling better.

Just been down in the woods to check where the all singing portable barbecue party was the other day as the fire service said there was a great deal of rubbish left behind.  Was just worried in case any bottles had been left lying around but I think the fire service had cleared it all away.  Now covered in bramble scratches and the odd nettle sting so out will come the lavender oil.

One downside of the heat is I forgot to close the small downstairs window sadly and someone tried to break in. Luckily the handle of the larger window broke which left them with no way to get in.  Came down in the morning to open the windows to let the cooler air in and no handle okay there's bit's on the floor how the hell is the handle on the outside???

    Sorry to hear that.

I know, it's actually 31c.... currently at work on a 13 hour work day in a reception area with a window that opens 3 inches....help! 😛

Dreadful.  I worked part time at the local private hospital before I fully retired.  The offices we worked in were former patient rooms.  Our windows only opened an inch at most, there was no air conditioning, they always raided our offices for fans to take to the ward and made us wear a uniform which really was winter garb as it was fully lined!    What made us smile though was out-patients on the ground floor and the ward on the third floor both had air conditioning!!   It was the heat in summer 2018 that decided me to retire fully, just about had enough.

I don't think anyone would be disappointed if disposable BBQs were banned completely. Horrible things.

It does worry me because of the wildlife across there.   I’ll try and get to the spot later today as the firemen said there were cans and other rubbish left.  Really annoying as there is a rubbish bin not far away.

Most of the world's chalk streams are in southern and eastern England and are under particular strain.

We are not the only ones desperate for rain now, this Summer could go down as a disaster for wildlife.

Yes, I have actually put a washing up bowl and old cat litter tray full of water the other side of my fence in the woods for the deer, badgers, birds and any other wildlife over there.  I keep the bird bath in the garden full of water too.

The last time I ever played with fire was in June 1970, when myself and a friend decided to ignite a bush. You wouldn't believe the amount of effort it took to put the bloody thing out. So, it is possible to learn a lesson and get away with it. My late father was a retained fireman -- so perhaps a fascination with fire is hereditary. That said, I have felt like a numbskull for 52 years!🤔

Aww, bless him 🤗 I have every respect and more for our fire services.  A difficult and dangerous job at times.

  19. And this is one of the reasons why I hate hot dry summers so much.

Stupid thick brain dead teenagers with less than 2 neurons rubbing or rattling together in their empty juvenile heads.   Late this afternoon whilst watering my neighbours pots and baskets I could smell burning and the tell tale shrieks emanating from the tinder dry woodland at the rear of my property.   Given the strong smell of burning, the close proximity to dwellings and the dryness of the trees and woodlands I went to investigate.  After a few terse words and a roasting (no pun intended)  I moved around 10 female teenagers out of the middle of the woods only to discover they had - yes, a lighted portable barbecue   They couldn’t have skedaddled any quicker to get away but I could see the contraption was not fully doused.   The fire service have been out to check it and they have dealt with it fully.  Where is the common sense?  Such selfish stupid behaviour.
