  1. Western power distribution have said that they have witnessed a number of power cuts caused by downed power lines in Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. That will be where these flashes are coming from.
  2. 9cm of wet heavy snow in wet ground and a stiff wind from the NE will be enough to bring some down.
  3. There is about 9cm in western Lincolnshire with reports of trees down and power cuts
  4. Will it is unlikely any low levels will see anything more than about 2 cm. No significant snow unless your in the peaks - although it isn't settling here in North Derbyshire yet.
  5. I am in the peaks for Christmas and it is raining heavy here
  6. I am in the pennines and it is just heavy rain, and about 2.5 C. My friend says it is rain in Chesterfield to.
  7. Re tomorrow's event, local North Midlands forecast said that the risk of widespread snow was unlikely and Metoffice warning was an *advisory* as it is marginal regarding rain/snow. Although it might come down to a nowcast event. They said that above 250m - southern Derbyshire there is a greater risk of settling snow, but it doesn't expect any real problems I.e travel disruption. Rain/sleet at low levels across the whole region and a rain event south of Nottingham.
  8. This is turning out to be a rubbish winter so far. I really hope we all get, at least, some cold and snow. Although not much on the horizon
  9. Completely agree, the models are now just pushing back any real cold and snow. The GFSP has been the most 'pro-cold' model lately.
  10. When is it likely to snow, how much do you think we will get?
  11. Think we are meant to get some snow later tonight. Current temperature fallen to 3.1 C
  12. Had a lovely snowy Saturday here in Shetland, with varying accumulations. Temp never got above 0C.
  13. True, plus the apparrant negative NAO keeps getting pushed back each week. The deep freeze promised by certain weather groups is yet to materialise!and even they keep pushing their thoughts back. Exacata weather as we know is completely unreliable, but even he must be red faced as his deep cold December hasn't, yet, appeared!
  14. We have had some snow showers this evening with a few cms in places. Think the north of Shetland has had about 6 cms.
  15. I believe the current weather to be pretty average. Westerly flow with the odd incursion of cooler air from the NW/N. Here in Shetland, we tend to get a good mix of weather during the winter with storms, rain, snow and ice and this year has been no different. The latest models show this continuing until the new year. Although it could dry out in the south later. Christmas is, at the moment, looking.....blah. .
  16. Apart from some snow over high ground this past week, it has generally been disappointing. No sign of anything substantial for the next two weeks at least. My friend who works with the weather in the military has said there has been no talk of a freezing cold winter by the UKMO in terms of their contingency planning. He said that latest discussions are that it will be mild/ average and unsettled from now into the new year.
  17. Yep still looking like a mild Christmas. Average to below average further north, but very limited in terms of snow.
  18. Probably more like 50 mph, with 60ish on the coasts. The highest gust of the storm today was only about 85mph. We were expecting a lot more up here as the UKMO often underestimate wind strength in Shetland. As there is uncertainty about this feature, then there may be some suprises...
  19. Lots of thunder and lighting here with sleet and hail. Severe gales with 76mph at Sumburgh head.
  20. Yes, it is pretty rough. Lots of local reports of damage and power cuts.
  21. Stormy here this morning with severe gales and sleet. I don't think today will be any different to other storms here. This is probably the sixth one this season where we have had severe gales of 70 mph +
  22. The Sumburgh cams are good. There for the puffins during the summer. Expect the airport to close tomorrow.
  23. Shetland is very exposed and we don't have anything to break the wind in the form of many buildings or trees, so the winds can cause power cuts. The worst thing for us is that our connections to the mainland can be lost for a few days, which can cause disruption and a lack of food in the shops.
