  1. Sorry do not agree, if there was an eruption tomorrow that introduced a lot more sulphur into the atmosphere than there is today, would that not change the composition of the atmosphere NATURALY.You mention standard composition, how do you know that todays atmosphere is standard? It has changed composition many times in earths history, and by that token todays atmosphere may not be the standard. Or do you call it standard because it suits us?So sorry to repeat myself but i cant see how a natural volcanic event that produces natural compounds be polluting the atmosphere, changing it, yes. I think volcanism has played a large part in evolution, and without it things would be very different today
  2. Thanks for the reply, its interesting how you,we consider and label certain chemicals, compounds etc as being pollutants,i dont think the planet, or if you like mother nature considers any natural componant to be a pollutant, thats our take on things. I do agree though certain components may be harmful to our species, but we are just one of many species on the earth at this time and perhaps, what may do us harm could benefit some other species. When our time is up( self destruction or natural effects)some other species will evolve and maybe take our place at the top of the food chain, and you never know, they may even breath a sulphur polluted atmosphere.P.S.Yes acid rain would be a down side but that would also depend on how much sulphur compounds were introduced, also whether the end would justify the means.
  3. Sorry for this off topic reply.I am no scientist,it was just a thought, an idea if you like, and i am sorry you find it scary.surely the more ideas put forward, both good and scary(as you say)can only be a good thing. The idea itself does not scare me,i would have thought by replicating(on a much smaller scale)a natural phenomenon would not result in the end of the world as you say.Perhaps if human actions are upsetting natures balance, then maybe and i repeat maybe nature needs our help to correct the imbalance.Again just a thought.
  4. I agree p3, its not an if but when. I wonder would it be possible for our so called advanced inteligent species to some how replicate the effects of a volcano, this may seem wat out, but if i am correct what we would need from a volcano is large amounts of sulphur to react with water vapour producing sulphuric acid droplets that inturn would reflect solar radiation....not sure how much sulphur would be needed to be introduced into the upper atmosphere, but if an amount could be calculated, could we perhaps use some of our many rockets to deliver the sulphur?so perhaps instead of having 20000 rockets carring nuclear death they could be adapted to carry sulphur.just a thought.Regards David.
  5. As i was saying yesterday i think the impact on global temps from volcanism is being largly understated, we cant tell,as such, when and how strong the next eruption would be. Correct me if i have got this wrong but am i right in saying global temps have risen by around 1 degree in 1 hundred years, that being the case a relatively small eruption could lower global temps by a degree or so in a fraction of the time. The effects from such an eruption would probably last only a couple of years, before its effects would be nagated and temps would then slowly start to rise again, but what if we had a much larger eruption that say lowered global temps by maybe 5 degrees, could this then have a knock on effect resulting in large increases in glacial coverage, thus maybe further reducing temps due to solar reflection.so if an eruption were to take place(as has happened many times in history) i think global warming would be negated and it could possibly take many years for the earths temperature to recover. P.S. i wonder what the effects of a sudden 5 degree drop would be,huge i would have thought, and the hot toppic that is global warming would cool rapidly. Its happened in the past and it WILL happen again
  6. Pennsylvanian ice age... 320 million years ago, Permian ice age... 300 million years ago
  7. regular ice ages have been occuring for HUNDREDS of millions of years(hardly recen).Large volcanic eruptions and the changing continental positions(plate techtonics) are the most important factor controlling periods of multiple glaciation. Also a large undersea volcanoe could end an ice age, by causing global warming,in that vast ammounts of methane released from clathrates would cause a large and rapid increase in the greenhouse effect.works both ways.
  8. yes, the vast amounts of sulphur compounds released would combine with water vapour, producing tiny sulphuric acid droplets, these have the effect of reflecting solar radiation.I think the earths volcanoes act as the earths thermostat, continually regulating the temperature,so as a pinatubo sized eruption would reduce global temps by a degree or so, a much larger eruption would reduce temps by several degrees. It has happened before, and will happed again, its all just a matter of TIME.
  9. would not a large volcanic eruption actually lower global temps, there would be a hell of a lot of sulphur going into the atmosphere to.
  10. shhhhhhh dont tell everyone, or you will have the GW brigade after you . interesting that it is actually above norm, according to the ( its all our fault govenment sponsored scientists) this should not happen, nice to see though.
  11. or we could have a cool wet summer and sea temps could drop back to normal come the late autumn, and we could have a cold/average winter.
  12. Januarys of the middle ages were a lot warmer than this years january.FACT.So i wonder who the viking settelers on greenland were blaming? They were probably very happy that greenland was a LOT warmer than it is today, otherwise their farming and crops would fail, then they would start to worry.Come the 1300s they did start to worry though because it became a lot colder, and they left.Too cold for farming and grazing.Very basic historical example i know, but i think we have been here before regarding warm januarys.
  13. moderate snow, started about 4 am. i do hope it does indeed stall steve.
