  1. 3.1/-0.4 the shower collapsed on top of us, not much to be said about it other than I saw a few flakes and ppn sounded icy but didnt last long at all.
  2. first snow shower on its way from WNW, skies covering quickly from that side now, will keep you up to date, academy now reading 3.1 and -0.5dp
  3. God every time I refresh the website the temp's a few decimals lower 3.5 / -0.2dp clear skies, surely over grass it could be getting as down as 2. right now?
  4. Glad to see the higher parts of the country are feeling the colder air, here we have fallen from 9C at 3pm to 5.3 right now so guessing the highest bits of the Ochils are theoretically starting to get cold enough for snow. Snow patches have, by the way, held on firmly above 500m during this past coldish snap, despite the sunshine and the 6-8C by day. Despite the 14mm of last night there was quite a bit of a sprinkle today which is going to be topped up in the hours to come thank god! Be fun to see until when snow is visible this spring. May-June like last year? Probable, seeing these weird seasonal lags. On a shorter term note, I am looking forward to the 4th morning of the year (not 'the winter'...) with a fresh snow covering. Remember those good days when we managed two in a row? Seeing the Metoffice winter weather stats I can't help but feel that Scotland has most definitely been an independent country in temperature terms during the last three months, it would have been awful to be in the NW of England, let alone the SE! So glad to have found a wee corner of the Forth valley where at least we have managed a few snow coverings and frosts despite the relentless zonal pattern!
  5. Loving this wee situation, it could get entertaining. Now watching the temperature dipping away ever so quickly under the belting rain, after which temps should fall free. 7.3ºC moderate rain. maxed at 9.4 (11.35am)
  6. Wow, yeah I seen it too at around 6.50pm as I walked back from the gym. Good to know it wasn't my imagination playing tricks! Sky just flashed as if lightning was nearby still cool to think it's flashed from so far up north although strangely the sky brightened up from the SE. Cold air still managing to make temp go down a few decimals of degree but nothing too exciting at 4.7. Shame the atlantic is breaking through, I was beginning to enjoy the run of dry days, mais c'est fini, 0.6mm so far today. Still, looking forward to Wednesday morning, let's see what it brings to the Central Belt.
  7. My view on that is that if they are talking about 'cold', we might as well be talking of the next glaciation . Nah, pretty much always decent that it snows south of Manchester as that means we will not be suffering any marginality. Unless we have the situation of the elongated A on top of us sending cold straight down from the continent into Iberia aided by a L in the Gulf of Lyon (Marseille). That is some cool situation for Barcelona but definitely not for Scotland with uppers of 0C whereas most of Europe is chilling under -10C (Barca is lucky if it smells the -5C though). Back to reality and today I have woken up to another dusting of snow, second day in a row as well so I might be getting too treated for my own good haha. Low temp in school of -2.4 so cold cold, in reality it would have been around -4/-5. Then at 2.30am it clouded over, I reckon, and it stopped going down. We had three fleeting snow showers earlier on, still there's less than an inch on the ground. Bitterly cold at 0C right now. Winter is finally here!
  8. I am sorry but I do not agree with the fact that freezing level is at 2000ft at the minute as I have 2 inches of fresh snow lying IMBY at 45m asl however many ft that is (150ft??). Temps hovering around 0C since 3am. Model-wise it does look like we are headed to a colder period with short mild shots interspersed. As someone said a while ago, seasons appear to be two months behind schedule indeed.
  9. Wow very impressive to see that Blitzen does not have as much snow lying as I do a hundred metres lower. There's about 2in on most surfaces here and temps still hovering around the 0C mark at 0.4C. Snow is stopping now. Very weird situation, can anyone shed some light as to why and how we enjoyed this wee surprise with uppers ranging from -2 to -4? Temperatures certainly tumbled down after peaking at 7C last evening. Also funny to notice how much colder it felt last night with the lashing winds and rain compared to this morning, despite the 7C less.
  10. Guys we were *not* expected to wake up at 0º and with a blanket of snow covering the ground in its practical entirety, WERE WE! Snowing lightly now, I cannot get how we got the lying snow, the netweather radar shows rain pretty much until now but it clearly is snowing, no ifs and buts about that 0.4C at academy so probably a tad below 0C in open air. Enjoy the white surprise when you open your curtains in the morning like I did :D:D:D:D:D xxx
  11. Heyhey! Reporting from Barcelona where I have been for the past week. When I arrived it had been 92 days since rain had last totalled an amount over 1mm. Thankfully that has changed now. Sparkling sunshine has essentially been the norm but now the jet is shifting south -allowing for a bit of cold air in the UK!- and so today has been a rather cloudy and drizzly rain with 1.1mm in BCN city centre. My mum was like wrap up it's frigid out there and it was drizzle and 11ºC which is a nice day by my standards atm lol Having said which it got to 20C during the weekend with minima around 13-15C. In fact I was in Benifallet, Southern Catalonia visiting my grandpa in the village and the station closest to us in Aldover maxed for Catalonia at 23.5C. So not surprised these people feel cold when it comes down close to ten! Looking forward to seeing some frost on Saturday when I get back. But oh boy will I not miss this...See you soon!
  12. Am I dreaming or was it just snowing?? Temp at 4C (school...) does not seem very supportive, but dewpoint is dead low and back home we have seen the odd snowfall starting at 9C (and probably 10% humidity, is that ever recorded round here? lol). Scotland's weather is absolutely crazy. That's why it's soo coool! Next shower be here soon so I will keep you posted...
  13. If it was to come to fruition though what would be its effects? I saw that for one 850hpa's were slightly higher in the core, above -4 actually, so would that not be bad in terms of snow in lower parts? Or is it one of those explosive features? Like for instance in Barcelona there was heavy snow at sea level with -2/-3 back in March 2010 (what days...). For some reason (the ocean?) in Scotland you need at least -6, better if -7/-8 tho for snow at sea level. However it's crazy how there are six factors for snow (dp, air temp, 850hpa,...care to elaborate?). Sorry for rambling on. snow is slowly melting but hills have a decent cover still, not greater than 10cm bar drifts I should think judging by eye, and temp is hovering around the 4C mark, it is meant to stay there until the end of the month, which will close a full 2.5C colder than December (6.8/4.3) in the hugely corrupted data off the school's rooftop (but hey this is telling us something). Skies grey as per usual.
  14. Impressive Northern. I must admit that the only time I passed by the area at the end of March 2013 the Drumochter must have had in excess of 50cm of snow but as soon as you got past Aviemore there wasn't a covering. Is that a thing that can happen as well? It was a noticeable W-E difference. In the W it was sunny, Skye was absolutely beautiful under the sparkling sunshine and, at 5C it was one of the hottest spots in the UK hahah. Past Crianlarich three days later, cloud and snow cover were still there.
  15. Northern Strath, you are arguably in one of the most favoured snow spots in the UK, aren't you? What's the record depth you've lived through up there? Back to sleety rain, everything still white above 100m tho but temps up in school, 2.5 Now I just want to get home and get ready for some cold after the 13th of February!
  16. Yep, as it is, it must be snowing more in Alloa than in here, someone is doing really well out of this streamer. Here it has not settled again under 100m despite a couple of beefy showers though, everything is really wet but oh well snow is still falling so pretty to see. Ah and to think that this time tomorrow we are back to pish. Nice walk in the snowy hills is on the cards tomorrow methinks. As for the guy who cancelled the expedition up the Ochils today, tbh you could have gone after ten as long as you had worn good clothing, I do not think that the amount of snow is extraordinary even in high altitude, as there has not been that much ppn. Having said which you would have had three times this morning which, for about 20-30min each, would have made you wish you'd never gone. Or maybe the complete opposite, depending on how you like your blizzards haha. Anyhoo, with a lively snawfall now and a school temp of 0.9 (so probs -0.) I thank mother earth for these 48 hours of winter that other people not too much further down south have not had the pleasure to enjoy. Attached picture explains itself
  17. What a beautiful morning to wake up to! Apart from the beauty of this relatively copious (1-2in) snowfall at 45m -which is pretty much gone- the situation in itself has been great. I will be changing my views on westerly winds as well, they're not always the devil haha Great to see so many people have done well, impressive to see the far east being affected by this set up, but again this only reinforces my idea that this whole sit should be food for thought. Still, there is a tiny wee point in the far end of Fife that avoids wintriness at all costs, same as Astelix's hamlet resisted the Romans lol, Incredible Scotland, so many microclimates, it's mind-blowing. I'd definitely move houses if I were you though, Lomond Hills probably would be your best shot, Benvironment would be your neighbour as well! Here all day we've had three very intense snow showers interspersed with sunny bits and an undesired thaw. Still, it's unsurprising as the ground is too warm and temps too marginal for it to settle. It did do during the night but as soon as 8am snow started to melt. Now there is a heavy snow/hail shower but temps have gone down from 3.9 to 3.3 in school so we are probably in our 1s. EDIT it's turned to proper driving snow.
  18. Nov'13, if this does not come out as a nice snowfall with some accum like saturday two weeks ago it will have been quite a big f up by the metoffice (again?) as they have done nothing but UPgrade this situation. It certainly is interesting if nothing else, and I am sure we all will get some snow overnight but how much and where is still very open to discussion and ultimately no-one knows. Time shall tell. School dipping ever further down, min registered as we speak at 2.7 under starry skies (yes, we do seem to be in a non precip spot at the minute) but hey that's good, I am all for giving the ground a chance to dry out and cool down. Knowing things 'round here it'd be probably close to 0C on the sensor but it feels so awful tonight that I am not even up for little experiments, don't want to move from the sofa ha! So yah, let's get nice dp's, nice air temp and nice dry ground and let the party begin, which it will do considering we have -7 / -8 uppers atm. Have a productive night everyone!
  19. Well it's probably not as entertaining south of the border tbh...a very heavy shower just crossed, pure water obvs but you could see how it was snow down to about 300m in the heaviest bit. Temp down to 4.9 school, prob high 3s in open spaces. Can't wait for this evening!!
  20. Bit of a quiet lull, temps going up too, 7º atm but oh well slowly but surely cold air will dig in throughout the evening into the morning for a bit of a snawfest. If all comes right we might be in for the most extensive snow of the season. And from a pure westerly as well!
  21. Beautiful radar imagery today, Metoffice upgrades can only be a good thing surely? haha Temperature is dropping 4.8C at school, probably 4 on a sensor, so maybe we will get down to more favourable temps for snow in the next few hours.
  22. It truly is pretty extreme a situation due to the high winds and also the fact that it brings about as much cold air as I imagine a westerly could carry all the way from Terranova. Rain on and off, peaking at 6am at 50mph like Benvironment, at 6.45 when I got up there was a monsoon going on out there. Still very very windy now, temps going down (8.2 from 9.9 at 1am). Nasty times, hoping school won't open as I dread the thought of leaving the house in half an hour!
  23. Models are looking great for a few extremes over the next few days interspersed with pretty cold air at times to make it better! ARPEGE the worst, ECM the best, GFS quite good.
  24. Exciting times, sensor is reading 0.7 and there's showers on the way so we'll see. School 2.9. Beautiful starry skies.
  25. We'll see what Sat brings, as already mentioned it has been a persistent feature in the models and so at least we know it's on the way and it certainly looks like it could have moderate impact even on lower ground, even in places not mentioned, for a time. Let's face it, it's still a good 72h away until it really begins, the metoffice haven't got a clue as to what's going to happen, but neither do we really. That's where model watching gets addictive, needless to say haha So sensor's out for a change and obvs recording like a lot less than school yano. 3.8 / 5.1 to be precise. Snaw has melted noticeably throughout the unexpected sunny spell but ahhh beautiful times. The surviving snow patch on King's Seat is very visible again but it's nice to see surrounded by a touch of new snow which should freeze in the coming hours, me hopes. Thurs/Fri look like another super duper time but then we get a bonus track on Saturday and 'heat' (+8º) seems to never come back after...que sera, sera, one efffffin year in a decent part of the country to see snaw and it turns out to be one of the mildest! Going home on Thurs next week until the 13th, I think I will come back and find a colder edge to things
