  5. Another rain pulse heading in from the sw but it's quite fast moving. Water was cascading over the dam at the Lake Vyrnwy Reservoir in Mid Wales today sparking fears today’s rain will cause more flooding as it feeds into the River Vyrnwy, joining the River Severn near Melverley
  6. Looking at the radar and forecast it looks as though Wales will get a pasting?. I think people along the Severn will have a worrying few days as all this water runs through.

  17. I watched a piece on Midlands today yesterday about the Vyrnwy dam being full. Any extra rain will now come straight over the dam and into the river, it runs into the Severn so this will only add to river levels.
  18. [*] 2252: Brittany Ferries says it has cancelled two crossings tonight - Plymouth to Roscoff and Portsmouth to Caen. A spokesman said an earlier Portsmouth to Bilbao crossing had tried to enter Brest but the waters were too rough. It is now anchored, "riding out the storm in Finistere". In case you missed it, hear this account of those passengers' ordeal. [*] 2251: Robin Gisby of Network Rail: "Early tomorrow morning, as long as there has been no additional damage, we will need to check the lines are safe and get a number of trains, which were not able to run today, in the right place, so I'd ask anyone travelling to bear with us as we work to get the system up and running."

Amber "be prepared" weather warnings now cover the Inner and Outer Hebrides, the north west Highlands, Argyll and Bute, Orkney and Shetland. The warnings are now due to come into force at 06:00. The rest of the country is covered by less serious yellow 'be aware' warnings. The public has been told to prepare for "significant" travel disruption and the Met Office said power cuts were also possible. Forecasters said widespread gales were likely across the country, with gusts of 65mph to 75mph in many areas. 'Power supplies' But storm-force gusts of 80 mph to 90 mph are also possible, particularly towards the north west of the country later in the day, where there will also be frequent wintry showers.
