  1. Funny how northerlies being absolutely torrential showers after winter passes. Streamers pepping up out of nowhere as they move South and collect moisture from that famous sea in the middle of Northern England... If this was 2 months ago we wouldn't see a drop, or flake.

That's exactly how I feel. Deep cold is not only dangerous because of ice on roads and pavements, but it's bad for the health too. People may like it, but it ain't good for them...

Yeah and clinically vulnerable start dying at 24C too. The optimal temperature for humans is narrow and very boring, no I don't want 18C all year long.

Blimey, best charts for years, bbc and met and netweather forecasts all positive, so much potential. Shouldn't we be more excited?? Or are we hedging our bets as we've 'seen it all before'. Thing is, we have seen it all before with the models but often find the forecasters don't buy into it. They are now!!!

2023 has been a year of cold spells in winter or hot spells in summer disappearing at 5-7 days out. The models have simply cried wolf too many times. And I notice yet again this morning, after about 3 weeks of tracking this cold spell, that we are still saying how amazing the charts are 300 hours out. I won't believe anything until there is snow on the ground.

Can only imagine how depressing it would be if some of the years last century happened in modern times, with some years most areas failing to reach much above 25-27C all year. Some ones I can find on the Trevor Harley site that stood out are 1920, 1927, 1931,1946, 1962, 1965 and 1974. Apart from 1946, 30C wasn't reached in the UK in any of those years.

Perhaps Mr data would have more knowledge of other years with poor winters, summers and maybe even springs too.

Would think many of poor summers had good winters to compensate. There is just no saving grace about this year. One battleground snowfall gone in a day, disgusting Spring and summer, a good couple of weeks in Autumn at least, but other than that forgettable.

Christ the lord that is some chart on the pub run. This is exactly what took place in December 2010. A cold front moved south preceded by a band of rain. What followed was freezing temps and instability everywhere with hefty outbreaks of snow moving here there and everywhereright down to sea level at coasts. The Irish Sea on the evening of Friday 17th December decided to plaster the north west with a foot of snow which lasted on the ground until well beyond Christmas with nightly minimums -12 Celsius through till Boxing Day.

I just have a feeling it could happen again. 2010 isn’t that long ago in the grand scheme of things, considering all the noise around recent global warming.

Anything can happen at any time.

This is good but 2010 was a whole other beast. That PV chunk over Scandi on your charts was actually over the UK in 2010, dropped directly down from the North Pole. It's what allowed a rare westerly lake effect event for Northwest England.

Won't be seen again for a very long time imo, but will make do with what the GFS 18z is offering 😄
