  1. The ppn animation is backing up what you're saying, Tom. Plus I can confirm it has just started raining here again now. Thought I heard a rumble of thunder a few minutes ago. The problem is I keep forgetting we are now slap bang under the flight path of EasyJet descending from the south, now that they're flying into Southend Airport!
  2. Love that walk. Used to do it a lot when a friend of mine lived in Kingston. But, yep, looking at the radar animation I reckon it could get a bit soggy this afternoon!
  3. Wow. That's quite an impressive rate. Just to the south of you, on the other side of the estuary, not a drop of rain falling now, and all the paths and roads have dried up. Amazing the difference a few miles can make.
  4. In addition to the Essex streamer mentioned above, there's some great anticlockwise movement of the clouds around the low - with its centre over the Thames Estuary currently. Text book stuff! Shows up quite well here: http://www.sat24.com/en/gb Definitely one for anyone in the early stages of studying Meteorology. (Or am I getting a bit carried away over something a bit unimpressive?!) Anyway, just a few miles across the Thames Estuary from the heavy stuff falling over Essex, no precipitation whatsoever here at the moment. Clear gap over NW Kent:
  5. The murky low rubbish cleared just enough a minute ago for me to spot a really impressive convective cumulus tower going up to my south. (The crud had covered it again by the time I grabbed my camera though.) Great to get a glimpse of some decent stuff going on higher in the atmosphere - in an area the lower clouds are ensuring is pretty much out of "eye-shot" at the moment. Sorry, can't think of a visual equivalent of "earshot" at the moment. Brain refusing to move beyond first gear this morning.
  6. Morning all, Feeling a little underwhelmed to be honest. Nothing but light rain here - as has been the case since it started in the early hours. (Of course, the second I type that, it starts to pick up in intensity! Just a little though. Yet, oddly, the grey of the sky starts to lighten in colour at the same time.) Therefore rain so far, I have to say, of 'nuisance' rather than 'useful' value. On the positive side....... it's Saturday....and it's a long weekend. And tomorrow and Monday are looking better I gather? Have a great BH weekend, chaps and chapesses, whatever you're up to. Lee
  7. Evening all, Street lights are on. Solar lights just starting to come on. And it's not long after 8. What a difference to two months ago! All I can say about today is.......wet. Finally stopped raining around 3, and a very few glimmers of sunshine in the hours after that. Weather station showing just under half an inch of rain fell today. So this has been the wettest day for quite some time, that's for sure. I know it's a bit of a cliché during dry summers, but the garden really does need it. MetO saying a max of 29° tomorrow in their London/SE forecast..... EDIT: Sorry, John, just seen you're also mentioning those sorts of temps for tomorrow too. I feel slightly more confident about them now!
  8. Thank you. (I'd have thought it must be quite uncommon for there to be two different places with the same name, so close to each other.) But, yep, keeping everything crossed Saturday doesn't turn out as bad as the charts are currently suggesting. So many people with so many outdoor activities planned...
  9. Ah, but is that THIS Rainham, or the Essex one?! (Sort of said tongue-in-cheek. But also a genuine question, Coast.) Anyway, certainly some rain in Rainham this morning. And such an eerie light. Almost a thundery feel to everything. A storm must be imminent..........yeah, right!
  10. if it's that bad here, you could always try living and working in somewhere like Afghanistan, North Korea, Iran, Pakistan, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Indonesia, Bulgaria or Sudan... Lovely late August day almost over. Max of 26.5°. So not too far behind Gravesend. Which makes sense as it's only about 10 miles away. Seeing the words "thunder" and "thundery" twice each in the MetO's London/SE forecast fills me with zero confidence that we'll see any such activity, I'm afraid to say! Will very quietly and surreptitiously keep my fingers crossed though.
  11. Good afternoon all, And what a fabulous afternoon it is. Just a few wisps and puffs of cloud passing overhead at the moment. Other than that, it has been a day of unbroken sunshine. And the temperature has just hit 26° according to the weather station. Lovely dry air with it too. It's hard to believe the nights have been getting longer for two months now. Already a third of the way to lengthening days again! Lee
  12. My choice of expression hit me after I'd posted. Completely unintentional pun, I promise! Beautiful colour. (Love the contrast of the blue and green in that snap too.)
  13. Funnily enough, I've just been outside and I thought to myself "There's definitely some sort of autumnal hint to the air this morning." And that's despite the fabulous blue sky. I think it may be something to do with the fact the sun is noticeably lower in the sky now, compared to a couple of months ago. Longer shadows and all that!
  14. Morning ladies and gents, Last of the morning clouds now moving away to the east. Currently 18.5°, none too humid, and barely a breath of wind. A very pleasant August day in prospect, me hopes. All still up in the air for the BH weekend it seems. Why oh why is the weather never straightforward in this part of the world?! But even if it does turn out a bit grim, I'm going to keep reminding myself we had great weather on both of the May holidays this year. And that's quite a rarity. Lee
  15. No. But here's a snap I took of the kitchen chairs this morning:
  16. The strange thing is it has happened on the side of the porch. It's not even the door. And, as you say, there was hardly a massive indoor/outside temperature differential last night. So, yep, I'm thinking "they're heeeere"!
  17. Morning folks, An unexpected brief - but quite heavy - shower yesterday afternoon. And another one just after midnight. Quite a novelty really, given the dryness of this summer. (Haven't been able to say that for a few years!) Currently 15.7° under a cloud-free sky. But there was certainly just a hint of autumn in the air first thing. As an aside, at some point overnight, one of the panes of glass in my front porch has cracked into a thousand pieces. On the inside! And I have no idea what on earth caused this to happen. Two pics so you can see what a mean; a "good" pane, and the shattered one right below it. Anyone with a better knowledge of science than me know why this might have happened?
  18. Wow. Blowing a gale here at the moment. Well, not literally a gale, but you know what I mean! Breeziest evening for quite a while. But I have to say, the past two days have been nothing like as wet as forecast. Ten minutes of light rain around 4 this afternoon, and a couple of hours of nothing-too-heavy yesterday. Hence lawn still straw-like.
  19. So pleased about this. Used to be in Hastings quite a lot (friends lived there from 2005 to 2011 - and, of course, went there loads as a kiddie), and it was heart-breaking to see one of the country's dwindling number of piers gutted by that fire. Great to see the work to rebuild it is imminent. Sun breaking through now. Let's get that convection going...
  20. Reckon I can agree to that! Any thunder over the river at Hammersmith, and the SE/EA peeps on here will be informed. Though the later in the day, the less compos mentis I will be.....hence the more likely any post I make may not be 100 coherent!
  21. Hoping so, as I'll be in the Big Smoke from about half 3 this afternoon. (Undoubtedly until the drunken ten past midnight final Medway-bound train of the day!) Will I be lucky, and get a thunderstorm.....or will the curse of Lee strike again??! Only time will tell. Meanwhile, the early watery sun has gone. Overcast now, and rain slowly increasing in intensity. Everybody's gardens really could do with a day of precipitation, so I'm not too gloomy about a wet Friday. Temperature currently 17.7° - but that seems pretty academic today really. Hope everyone has a great Friday. Lee
  22. Stunning picture, Coast. Certainly a reminder the next season is autumn.
  23. Glad you got to see a few meteors. I saw two last night. (Not as many as the night before, but they were both really bright. And I wasn't watching for as long either. So I'm happy with that.) Saw the second pass of the ISS too, but it wasn't a patch on the first one of the evening; dimmer, not overhead, and wasn't visible for as long. I don't have an Apple phone, but I wouldn't be surprised if that app you mention has an Android version too. Will investigate, as the app I have is one for spotting satellites etc, rather than star-gazing - so it doesn't name the stars/constellations. (Computer-wise, I can highly recommend a programme called Stellarium. It's brilliant.....and free.) As for today, a gloriously sunny morning so far. Just a few cumulus developing as I type. Current temp = 18.7°. Have a good hump-day all. (Ooh err missus!)
