  1. Morning Coast, Yep. I think I'll be glued to the usual sites today! Nooo! I want an extra large helping of tuoni and fulmine please. You 'phobes have got months free of them ahead! BTW, that presenter lady on the Italian site is fab. She sometimes gets quite loud and excited when there's severe/dramatic weather on the way to La Bella Italia!
  2. Morning all, Beautiful, sunny start to the day so far here. But is it the calm before the literal storm? Quite a change in today's MetO warning from yesterday's "shrunk down" version - the increase in area is pretty staggering, to my eye! Oh well, just have to play the waiting (and radar & strikes watching) game now... Not sure if anyone is interested, but I notice the Italians - for a few days now - are going for "trombe d'aria" (tornadoes, I believe) in Rome on Saturday. (And all because of somebody called Penelope! Hehe!) http://www.ilmeteo.it/ Lee
  3. I'll have a pot of builders' tea, and a big fat scone oozing with jam and cream please! And, naturally, the update comes through within seconds of me posting about the lack of update! I see my area has been removed from the latest warning zone. Par for the course when thunderstorms are involved, so I can't say I'm surprised or disappointed. Thanks Reef. Another great link. Bookmarked!
  4. I noticed the MetO said there would be an update this morning to their warnings. Checked a few minutes ago, and no update yet. A sign of the uncertainty maybe? Having said that, there's still an hour of the morning left. And I've noticed that when they say there will be an update prior to an event, there always is. So I'll have another look later.
  5. Morning all, Was a sodden start to the day here too. A couple of really torrential downpours earlier. Everything still damp and dripping outside now. And, yep, the rain has cleared to leave us with the leaden grey skies others are reporting. Really gloomy light out there at the moment. Current temp = 14.6°C. Still some uncertainty over tomorrow's rain/storms, I gather? Quelle surprise! Lee
  6. Yep. The voice of bitter experience is ensuring I'm keeping my feet well and truly on the ground, when it comes to Thursday's possibilities.
  7. Evening all, Sunny morning here, but clouded over by noon. And with the exception of a few glimmers of hazy sun through the afternoon, it was a grey old pm. And we actually had about five drops of rain a couple of hours ago. In terms of "interesting" weather, Thursday seems to be the day for us south-easterners to watch, huh? I spy "thundery", "torrential" and "convective" in the MetO's warning. First time for a while... Lee
  8. Here's a link to the webcam installed on the International Space Station. It's not always active, but when it is, it's quite amazing to watch. The ISS has just passed over equatorial Africa, and you could clearly see lightning flashing away 250 miles below. http://www.ustream.tv/channel/live-iss-stream And here's where to go to find where the ISS currently is, in relation to earth: http://www.isstracker.com/
  9. Not SE/EA related, I know, but I'll post this in the webcams thread too. Just been watching the webcam on the International Space Station as it passed over equatorial Africa. And you can see the lightning flashing away from 250 miles up. Amazing - if intermittently active - webcam. http://www.ustream.tv/channel/live-iss-stream
  10. Turned into a corker of a day here, once that cloud cleared off this morning. (Yes, that cloud I forecast to hang around all day! Easy to see why I'm no meteorologist!) Blue skies then prevailed......with bits and pieces of altocumulus to the south for a while - but far enough south not to block out the sun. The max temp was 17.9°, but it really did feel warmer than that in the sun. I notice the soil is drying out again. Looks like it does in the middle of a dry summer. Not what you'd expect at just six hours from October! Sorry some were stuck under a blanket of grey today. (I can relate - we had that yesterday.) The contrasts across our region show up quite well here:http://lance-modis.eosdis.nasa.gov/imagery/subsets/?subset=AERONET_Lille.2013273.terra.500m As Coast said earlier, East Anglia and Kent the winners today.
  11. And, as always, the weather has made a fool of me! When will I ever learn?! I post on here about the cloud thickening, and expecting it to stay grey all day. And within minutes.....the cloud bank just disappears off to the NW, and we're left with blue skies. Which is what I've been waiting for actually, as I want to try out my new prescription sunnies!
  12. Morning all, Disappointing weekend here, sunshine-wise. Yesterday, in particular. The second sunless Sunday on the trot. Not a glimmer of the stuff from dawn to dusk. Looked at the satellite pics, and there we were - stuck under that one blob of cloud over NW Kent, which just refused to shift or break up. Then, once the sun had set, clear starry skies happily moved in! Was feeling more optimistic about today earlier as, although cloud had re-formed overnight, it was quite well broken. But in the last 20 minutes or so, it has thickened up once again into a completely overcast mass. And Sat24 now strongly hinting the Thames estuary is being the daytime cloud generator for NW Kent it always seems to be if the wind is from a direction of anything from NNE through to SSE. Hoping to be proved wrong though! For those wanting thunderstorms, here's a link a mate - who's fully aware of my love of storms! - sent me over the weekend. Some stunning pics from the US in there.http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2434754/Catching-lightning-The-breathtaking-photos-professional-storm-chaser-follows-Americas-extreme-weather.html Have a nice Monday, folks. 1st October tomorrow! Where on earth did the first three-quarters of this year go?! Lee
  13. Yep, that's what I meant to type! Nearly got it right! No more, I promise! Got today's idiocy out of my system now! And the sad thing is that was the best I could come up with. So I'll leave to your imagination how truly dire the others were!
  14. There's probably an old adage for that too. "Crane flies in the front room......the following summer will be witness to storms full of flash, bang and boom." OK, I'll stop now! ;-)
  15. Morning all, Have to say we've done very well, in terms of sunshine, since the thoroughly overcast weekend. And today is no exception. Clear skies here, with just a few cumulus type clouds scudding across from east to west. Currently 14.1° with a slight breeze from the ENE. Not too bad at all really. And even the weekend is looking drier and sunnier than it was a few days ago. I have stuff to do outside tomorrow, and earlier in the week I was thinking "Looks like I'll get drenched on Saturday." Get the feeling I'll stay dry now. I don't know about anybody else, but this year's spider season is far more "active" than any other I can remember. Never seen so many indoors. And so many webs in the garden. No doubt there's some sort of old wives' tale which says something like "Spiders in September.....expect a light snow shower at 6:37pm on 28th November." Have a great Friday, folks.
  16. Thanks very much, Reef. Great webcam. Shame I missed the snow yesterday. (Note to self: check the 'Snow and Ice' thread more often!) A bit of light rain and drizzle on some of the Lapland cams this morning. But not spotted any of the white stuff yet. ________________ Bright and quite nice here this morning. Started off very dull, but that clearance over the North Sea has recently moved in. And the fact we can hear the trains confirms beyond any shadow of a doubt there's an easterly/north-easterly element to the wind at the moment. Current temp of 13.8°. One thing I must say. I was looking earlier to see how the sun was doing at breaking through the cloud. And it soon became apparent I was looking for that ball of fire at an angle about 20° too high - and too far north as well! When I saw where it actually was, it was quite a reminder we're well and truly heading into autumn now! Have a great Thursday, peeps.
  17. Struggling with what to say about today. It was just a "nothing" day really! Misty start, then some hazy sun, max temp of 20°, and no wind. Sorry, but I just can't get excited about that at this time of year! (I'd be raving about it if it was the first spring-like day after winter. But in terms of autumn, it's a bit mundane really.) But, yep, at least it means I still haven't had to put the heating on yet. Keeping an eye on the Finnish traffic cams for snow. Not seen anything yet. And late September / early October is usually when the first flakes appear. (With the exception of 2011.)
  18. Couldn't believe how many I saw in the garden this morning. (And in the middle of one of them, a spider was happily tucking into its breakfast of a daddy-long-legs thingy! Yum, if you're a spider, I'm sure. But I stuck with tea and toast!) ---------------- Turned into a corker of a day here, too. (And a good three hours earlier than yesterday.) Sunshine all the way, once the mist cleared off just after 10. And barely a breath of wind. Max temp of 20.8°. So none too shoddy for the last week of September, I'd say. As an aside, I just cannot believe how quiet the hurricane season has been so far. Wonder if the Atlantic is saving up all its power for Oct/Nov?
  19. Morning folks, Misty here too. Thickening one minute, thinning the next. And so on and so forth. (With the sun visible through it for about 95% of the time, suggesting it's quite a shallow layer??) Here's what I thought was quite an autumnal scene from the front garden earlier this morning. Have a great day, ladies and gents. Lee
  20. Was a fabulously sunny afternoon. Yay! Seems like an age since we had one of those. Just as I was giving up hope for today, around 1pm, chinks of blue suddenly started appearing all over the place. And by 2, not a cloud to be seen. A much, MUCH needed few hours of the old rays shining down on this part of the world. Hopefully we'll all get them tomorrow - and for more of the day!
  21. Morning Coast, We actually managed TWO glimmers of sunshine....before the thick grey took over again! The Channel clearance looks to be on your doorstep though. Sunnies needed shortly for you dwellers of the southern littoral?
  22. Morning all, Cursing this dirty high, I can tell ya! What a waste of a nice early autumn anticyclone. Having said that, I must report there's more of a 'lumpiness' to the cloud sheet this morning, compared to the dawn-to-dusk incredible uniformity of yesterday's stuff. And not only that, I spy with my little eye a couple of chinks of blue. Clearer stuff to our south seems to be heading this way, according to the satellite sequence. (But I said that yesterday about the clearance to the NW! So not getting my hopes up for today.) Have a great Monday, folks. Lee EDIT: The sun has just broken through!
  23. Well, what a thoroughly miserable, gloomy, drab day! Not one second of sunshine today. (And only a few minutes yesterday.) The sky did not change colour one iota! Just a monotonous slate grey all day long. Yuk yuk yuk! (Made even worse by the humidity.) Max temp this afternoon was 18.6°. Not too bad for an overcast late September day, I suppose. Oh well, fingers crossed for at least five seconds of sunshine tomorrow. Or do the synoptics suggest that's unlikely in Kent? I hope not - I need some sun! Have a good evening, folks.
  24. Morning folks, Yep, that cloud layer sitting over us too. Satellite pics show the clearance over much of The Midlands slowly edging this way though. Hope it makes it, as I've got a fair few hours of gardening in front of me today - and would rather be doing that, at this time of year, with a bit of sunshine on my back. Currently a very humid 16.6°. Feeling somewhat tender OK, hungover, this morning. So what with that, the humidity, and the gardening, I think it's a safe bet I'll be getting through a pint or two of water today. Pint? Did someone say pint? Bleurgh. Lee
  25. Try this, and then just click on Lappland. http://www2.liikennevirasto.fi/alk/english/kelikamerat/ Great site during the winter months. Have looked at it for several years.
