glasto Glastonbury festival 2023
Zippy replied to deadstillstanding's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Is anyone on site already and can give an update as to the rainfall overnight and currently, and whether the trek from car to campsite in the morning is likely to require wellies? Thanks in advance.- 129 replies

glasto Glastonbury festival 2023
Zippy replied to deadstillstanding's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
This. It feels like every time I look at what it’s doing in Somerset over the last few weeks it’s been hammering down. Lots of rain across the South today again. Im concerned for a mud trap tbh. The site does dry out quickly these days but there is a point of no return. A few years ago (can’t remember which, they all blend into one now) we had an almost completely dry weekend but all the rainfall in the two weeks prior meant foot deep, pull off your wellies, sticky mud in large areas of the site. Just makes getting about a massive pain. I would want to see at least 4 warm days with no rain to harden up the surfaces before gates open, but I don’t think we’re going to get it.- 129 replies

My annual dip into the netweather forums begins. Pleased to see there is already a thread underway. I hate to be a doom monger but I have had a feeling for a wet one this year for some time. Hope I’m wrong!- 129 replies

That was a solid 8 on the mudbath-dustbowl-o-meter. Don't remember a dustier one. Would happily take that weather every year if offered tho. As close to perfect conditions as what Glastonbury ever gives us.
-
I'd happily sign off on this now. Even worst case thunderstorm with 15mm rain on the Tuesday, temperatures will ensure that the site recovers very quickly. This is basically a scorcher in Glastonbury terms. More suncream use than welly use imo.
-
Scorchio.

I'd bank this now tbh. Great work J10.

Sounding very positive. Feeling good about this one.

Bang on time as always J10. I don't remember a blip last year?? We got some cracking info in the lead up. The weather in the last couple of weeks was making me a bit anxious that we'd get a very similar situation to last year. 2016 was drier than average for festival weekend, but the very heavy rain in the weeks beforehand made it one of the muddiest I've attended I think. However it looks promising over the pilton area this week, and if that generally positive trend continues in the lead up to solstice I will be pretty hopeful.

Now in and pitched up. From what I've observed on the way in, there are definitely parts of the site that will be unrecoverable regardless of rainfall and temps between now and Sunday, in my opinion. At the same time there are some areas that are in decent conditions. I wouldn't risk anything other than wellies/full wets for the next couple of days personally. If it stays dry and warm today and tomorrow, by Friday intermediates might be an option.
-
Yeah it's all looking pretty abysmal, and the pics and vids I've seen from on site suggest it is already very waterlogged in places. I'm going for a 9/10 on the mudbathometer - Full wet footwear required for Wednesday and you can probably leave the Slicks at home this year. Still, we've been a due a wet one. Sort the weak from the chaff. I'm ready.
-
Bang on time, as always. Im gonna stick my neck out this year and say the weather will be... mixed.
-
Moderate shower for about half hour a little while ago but nothing that will upset stable ground conditions at this stage. 3/10 on the mudbathometer for me.
-
Lovely conditions for a sturdy erection. Ground very tent peg friendly. Looking forward to a perfect festival. I'm sure this has been suggested in previous years, but we should start a crowdfunder to fix the J-man a ticket next year for all the hard work!
-
Glorious day in the Pilton area. Blue skies and a smattering of cloud. Sun cream definitely required if tomorrow is anything like this. All the forecasts now appear to have synchronised on your showers Friday and Sunday reading of it J10. Lovely stuff.
-
Sounding lovely! Thanks for all the hard work over the last few days. I will be in the area from tomorrow afternoon and very much looking forward to a vintage year.
-
STICK! I'd take that latest forecast every year if offered. I don't think the small amount of rain expected tomorrow will have any real impact on ground conditions on the majority of the site, given that Tuesday is expected to be dry. Incredible ups and downs in the run up this year. My dilemma now is whether I can risk only taking the intermediate footwear and leaving the wellies at home...
-
That's more like it. I'm much less worried about intermittent rain than I used to be as the site does dry out and recover surprisingly well now which the improved drainage has helped with. Cheers J10.
-
No complaints here. You cannot be too negative about a Glastonbury forecast in my opinion. Thanks for your efforts, I enjoy reading every blog! Still got a good feeling it's a warm one...

Get the wet stuff out the way mid June for a dry festival.

Exciting times. The countdown has begun! I am loathe to say it loud for fear of jinxing it, but I have got a strong feelin in me old bones about a very good year for weather. To add to other contributions, 2010 was definitely the last proper scorcher. Hottest festival I've been at hands down, although I wouldn't be overly keen to repeat it. Sunburn and dehydration were a problem and it was so hot it killed the daytime atmosphere a bit. 2007 was the last proper mudbath by my reckoning albeit without the risk of serious flooding (a la 2005) since drainage was improved. Last year was a scorcher on the Wednesday. Thursday some mid afternoon showers. Friday started well and then the heavens opened for an apocalyptic thunderstorm which shut down the main stages, and after that it was wellies for the rest of the weekend before drying up on the Monday in time for everyone to leave in the sun. This year I will be in the area from Tuesday midday and on site from first thing Wednesday morning. It's gonna be a warm one I'm tellin ya...

Any sign of a 2015 Glastonbury thread as yet?? I'm not a regular on the forums so apologies if I've missed anything, but I love dipping in at this time of year for the long range Glastonbury forecasts. Definitely become a big part of my yearly festival routine.
