  1. We’ve had a fairly reasonable day here after early drizzle. It dried up mid-morning and although we had plenty of cloud cover, temps managed 18C in occasional breaks. OK - not really what you hope for or expect in early August but better than recent days….. Tried to tie up some floppy plants with canes to avoid them being flattened on Saturday - I’ll have to wait to find out if I’ve done enough.
  2. Just a heads-up - the MetO have issued a weather warning for unseasonably high winds (again!) on Saturday covering much of south and central Wales. It looks like a timely warning according to their own maximum wind gust chart for 4:00pm Saturday…. Other models show similar conditions so it might be a good time to tie down those garden chairs!
  3. It’s a nice cool, bright and sunny September August morning here and - hooray! - it’s not raining. Might be able to do something useful outside for a change…..
  4. No brightness here, I’m afraid…..rained all day yesterday with strong, gusty breeze to go with it. This morning it’s still raining - pretty heavy at the moment - and no sign of a let up. I confidently predict there will be no hosepipe bans in Pembrokeshire this year.
  5. Sorry to say it but it’s really gloomy, damp, cloudy and cool this morning - it’s been an awful start to the school summer holidays this year. I’m sure things will improve in August although those in the MOD thread seem pretty despondent about the model output at the moment. Keeping my fingers crossed though….
  6. What a washout! No let up all day long - just rain. Mother Nature sure knows how to restore balance - if we were short of rain in June we’re really making up for it in July. ️️️
  7. I’m with you on the subject of wind which can be very destructive in these hills and I’m also faced with two leaks which I cannot seem to fix - if the wind is strong enough and the rain heavy enough the water finds it’s way in somehow. Don’t mind snow, blizzards even, and I don’t mind extreme heat for short periods, but stormy winds and heavy rain are my least favourite weather!
  8. Same here, yesterday. This morning it’s dull and misty with light drizzle, and still cool for July. Looking out on the greyness it would resemble a December morning if it wasn’t for the green leaves on the trees! Never mind - it won’t last and we’ll have some more warmth and sunshine before the summer’s over…. no, really!
  9. A generally wet few days to come with some areas getting more than their fair share of rain according to the UKMO charts…. This shows accumulated rain totals for Wales up to 1:00am Tuesday… That’s a poor look for July and not the way we want to see the school holidays start, especially as much of Europe is too hot for enjoyment according to the news! At least the hills are safe from wildfires for the time being….
  10. We’re all looking and hoping for some signs a of change in the course of the current cool, cloudy and wet set-up but as long as the jet stream continues to use the UK as target practice it’s doubtful that any high pressure will be able to build over us….. GFS 0Z. 30/07 - 07/08: We need to see this pattern change and move north and it’s still very possible, but not much sign of it in the models yet.
  11. As forecast, we have a very wet start to the day accompanied by a fairly gusty wind. It’s cooler than usual and not at all like a mid-July day. So the weather continues unsettled, cool and autumnal as we wait for August to bring Summer back…. ️️. At least the garden hose will not be needed for a while.
  12. Very sad to see any trees dying out but round here it’s ash dieback which is clearing the woodland. Hundreds of ash trees gone over the last few years. We still have plenty of beech, sycamores, oaks and hazel but the variety I remember in my younger days seems to be decreasing only too quickly. Its stopped raining now after a very wet day but tomorrow looks promising and it should be a nice sunny start!
  13. I agree with you! Everything looks so much healthier and cleaner with regular rain and sun alternating. Mind you, it is fascinating to see these weather extremes becoming more and more pronounced year on year but also worrying to think what events we might be discussing in here in five years time…..
  14. Would be interesting to know which type of weather is favourite for those of us that follow these things - a month of 30-35C blistering heat and no rainfall, or what we have now: slightly below average temperatures, alternating rainfall and sunshine every other day. Personally I don’t envy those in southern Europe and the Mediterranean where wildfires are getting out of control and people are being told to stay indoors between 11am and 4 pm. You can’t work outside effectively in those conditions. 15. Great pictures…. Agree with your forecast for today! Steady, moderate rain here all this morning so far. Looks set for another few hours too. Next couple of days look more promising though and the rain is welcome provided it doesn’t last all week!
  16. Yes, it’s still unsettled with a largely cloudy sky and gusty winds from the south west. Looking back over the posts through July it seems that the wind has been the most persistent feature of our mid-Summer month, all down to a series of Atlantic low pressure systems which have plagued us for the last two weeks or more. If these systems had occurred in October they would almost certainly have become ‘named storms’ but in July they haven’t quite had the strength to merit this ‘honour’. I can put up with cloud but I’m getting fed up with the wind which does make outside activities that much less enjoyable. The current meteorological set-up will have to change if any of that super heated air in southern Europe is going to reach us but I’m not crossing my fingers for that.
  17. Quite a nice morning here - it’s breezy but not wild. We’ve had three or four sharp showers move through but there’s plenty of open blue sky and some towering cumulus to admire. Might get a walk in today without getting wet…
  18. I think it could be described as ‘stormy’ here now with large, mature trees swinging about in the wind and leaves being blown around like October. Being wet from the rain, in full leaf and therefore heavier than usual I wouldn’t be surprised to find a few vulnerable trees fallen over by tomorrow. The rain should ease up soon though, according to the radar.
  19. The MetOffice has now extended the wind warning through Saturday as well. Here the wind is strong and gusty, not really damaging, but I have moved the car away from under the trees - can’t be too careful!
  20. The Atlantic rain and wind have arrived as promised with the strongest wind gusts here likely to occur between 1000 and 1400. So far nothing exceptional - just a typical wet and windy morning - but it looks like a day to stay indoors if possible.
  21. A MetOffice warning for high winds has been issued for South and West Wales tomorrow. Here is the peak gusts chart for 2:00pm tomorrow courtesy of the UKMO: 80kph = 50mph. Might be worth checking those sweet pea stakes…..
  22. Looks like a wet week for most of us according to the ECM up to Sunday midnight (accumulated rainfall chart)….. I know we were worried about a lack of rain recently but is this over-compensating?
  23. It’s a really unpleasant day for July here, with heavy rain and strong winds, almost stormy conditions, and no chance of seeing the sun. More of the same in the next week with no settled weather in the medium term outlook. Looks like I’ll be relying on August to bring Summer back because I did enjoy those lovely weeks in June….
  24. When the mountain glaciers have retreated far enough to restrict Chinas fresh water rivers and their cities start to experience water shortages, then we might see China take climate change seriously. Industrial pollution doesn’t seem to bother them, though.
