Last day of Spring 2023. Overcast and 13c Just “boosting” the heating for 10 minutes to take the chill off Its been thoroughly depressing in firstly nearly 4 weeks of rain, then 2&1/2 weeks of relentless icy cold winds, dry with occassional sunshine. I am 65 years old and cannot recall another spring like this. I need warmth !

Same here, 14c, breezy with grey sky and Sun trying to appear. The South East England “eternal autumn” continues oh and the Met still saying May is 1.1c ABOVE average!

We had Solar panels installed here on 5th Jan and I am keeping note of cloudless days to see what our maximum harvest will be during each month. This year to date we have had 2 cloudless days only. And for the record we have had no more than 30 minutes of sunshine since Thursday.

Model Output Discussion - Into February

Interesting longer term Met Office update this afternoon mentioning a low possibility of wintry disruption in weeks 2-3 of March. Teleconnections update also shows the AO heading markedly negative as we move through March. -

Could be record breaking cold according to Cohens recent update. AO Blog Update | Verisk's Atmospheric and Environmental Research (aer.com) I think we all know what will happen when that air reaches the Eastern Seaboard and out into the Atlantic ?! -

Appears some solar radiation is causing the slight thaw ( remember we have limited cloud thickness at the moment ). The wind has also veered more to about 100degrees meaning any convection is moving North of Thames. Winds will back more ENE around the Estuary in around 3 hours and should later begin to enhance convection. Temps will fall back as Sun recedes so will probably freeze everything around 6pm.

Im just up the road from you and confirm a small rise in temperatures over the past 90 minutes.. Temp now -1.0C ( from -1.3C ) and DP -3.3C ( from -4.5C ) so a milder layer now over us. The Snow that is falling is of a very wet type and causing some ground melt. I would expect a lowering of temps again when precipitation clears.

Radar shows a small streamer with Medium intensity Zone heading from Cambridge ( South West ) to Oxford atm. Thames Estuary stratus cover seems to be thinning and light snow easing. First signs of streamer development perhaps appearing in the Estuary ......one area just east of Ipswich and another just offshore East of Norwich.
