  1. This is a good place to start https://community.netweather.tv/learning/teleconnections/ And here for more research and learning https://community.netweather.tv/learning/research/madden-julian-oscillation-mjo-r36/
  2. It is a biggie. GFS has it deepest currently (no shocks there!). (GFS, ECM, Meto and Arpege shown here).
  3. @I remember Atlantic 252 The quotes never went away - the info is in the first post of this thread.
  4. We're trialling it for now. We'll be monitoring feedback and updating the system in that time. Putting a poll up before more people have got used to it and before we've had a chance to improve it based on feedback wouldn't give a true reflection.
  5. I think it was more a 'there's plenty to keep an eye on', but if you want answers now, or in 6 hours, or 6 hours after that (and so on), then you're going to be disappointed! My read of what's going on right now is that it's a slow burn, the pieces are in the air, but we'll have to wait to see where exactly they land. And meantime, there are indeed lots of other points of interest to keep us entertained.
  6. You don't have to scroll back to try to find it even now - just click the arrow next to the name and it'll take you to the post
  7. @MAF I think so, and to be fair it's rare to get as many positive comments around a change this sizeable, so early in the piece, which is a really good sign. But, I can also understand the comments about it being a bit harder to follow some threads. But, I'd like to think with a combo of people getting more used to it and the ongoing development of the system things will improve in that respect.
  8. We'll see how it goes. If you go onto communities that use discourse or flarum (and probably others), they use this sort of system and it works well. There's obviously going to be a bit of a learning curve on here as we've had the traditional quote button option there since day dot, and you're right some people may not know how to select text on mobiles etc, but I've already made a tutorial to help with that, which will hopefully be of use: https://community.netweather.tv/how-to/posts-and-posting/how-to-quote-a-part-or-all-of-someones-post-r5/ It's absolutely one of those changes where it's going to be at it's worst (so to speak) early on, while people get used to it. So, I think we need to give it a bit and see where it sits once it has bedded in, and also as we further develop it - for instance yesterday we added the links back to the original post on the reply bit. And as @Audaxian mentioned a way to show the post contents inline without actually having to go back to it would further enhance the experience too, so we'll hopefully get something along those lines in at some point as well.
  9. Thanks, I think on discourse it's a click to load the post contents inline, so certainly a similar idea to the one you're describing. I think something along those lines is definitely something I'd like us to be able to do, but it's another layer of dev work involved, so something that needs to go in the post-trial roadmap (if we continue on with this system), rather than a speedy thing we could drop in tomorrow.
  10. Selectively quoting rather than quoting an entire post is more steps but I'm not sure that's a bad thing in this instance. Ultimately, it will hopefully lead to easier-to-follow discussions and less clutter, and maybe with that extra clarity and that bit of extra time taken to (optionally) quote relevant content when making a post it could be a small aid in creating more considered discussions too.
  11. Little update on the system just went live. Now, when you reply to someone, it also links back to their post (the arrow to the left of their name is the link). For example: @Met4Cast
  12. There is some thought behind the change to the quoting system, and it is something used on other forum software very successfully, so perhaps give it a chance to bed in and see what you make of it at that point. There is a thread covering it on the go (along with a big banner on every page, pointing to it), so if you have comments or questions about it please head there and don't put them in here as a. it's off topic and b. it's less likly your questions and feedback will be seen, discussed or acted upon.
  13. I've put together a quick 'how to quote' type guide, which includes some more information about selecting text on both android and iOS devices, for those who may not be sure.
  14. What phone are you using? Most will allow you to select text by long pressing on it, then you can drag that out to select whatever you want it to. As mentioned above, once you've selected some text (long press rather than double-tap works best on most devices), you should see handles you can drag to select the text you want. They'll look different depending on the device type, but as far as I'm aware they all work fairly similarly.
  15. @Met4Cast I think it's a change that will need a bit of time to bed in, as people get used to it. I think once more people see how it works, they'll either use the quote selection option (which has always been available btw) or give a bit more context within their replies to people. And on the positive side too, other forum software like discourse has used this sort of system very successfully for many years. We'll see how it goes though, it's just a trial at this stage.
  16. @geordiekev Yep, just tested it and it seems to work
  17. @snowdog Yes, that's correct. The idea is that you could quote maybe the most relevant part(s) of a post rather than the whole thing. And/or use the reply button and perhaps add a bit of context to your post in terms of what you're responding to
  18. @Midlands Ice Age It's not the copy button you want to click, that's from your device - it's the quote selection one from the forum itself - it'll appear just below the text you have highlighted. It doesn't overwrite if you highlight and then click that button button, so you can do that multiple times if you like. In terms of hiding posts - if you click the 3 dots top right if your post, you can hide it from there if you need to. Then, you don't have to worry about any content left over.
  19. While we trial the new 'reply-to' rather than quote button on the community, you may be wondering how to quote someone's post - so here's the guide: It's a simple process, just highlight the text you want to quote and click the 'quote selection' button which appears. Rather than quoting the entirety of a post, this method gives you the option to quote the part(s) of a post most relevant to your reply. You can do this multiple times within your post, to quote snippets of the same or multiple posts, if you'd like to. If you're on a mobile/tablet, and aren't sure how to select text, please read on: On Android - long pressing will select a single word but will then display handles to drag the selection out to wherever you like. On iOS, to select a word, double-tap with one finger. To select a paragraph, triple-tap with one finger. To select a block of text, double-tap and hold the first word in the block, then move the grab points (handles) to select the text you want.
  20. If you'd like to curate the content you see on the community, one really good way to do it is to follow other members. This allows you to be notified (if you'd like) when they make a new post, but it also allows you to have a curated feed of just the members you follow within the activity stream. Many of you are probably asking what on earth an activity stream is right now, because it's not especially widely used - please keep reading to find out more.. Firstly, how to follow members. It's a pretty simple task - just go onto the profile of the member you'd like to follow and click the follow button: Once you have a few members you're following, you can view all of their recent posts from one place on the activity stream. One of the custom options available on there is 'members I follow' Once there, you'll see a screen like this (desktop and mobile views shown): It's customisable with the filters at the top, so you can limit the time span, only show content you haven't read, and so on - you can then save those options as a custom stream to use whenever you like. There are numerous other pre-built activity streams for you to try and edit as well - it can be a great way of discovering and following the content that interests you. Hopefully this is useful, please feel free to ask any questions you have below.
  21. We're trialling a change - more info here: https://community.netweather.tv/topic/99817-where-did-the-quote-button-go/?do=getNewComment You can still quote things - there's info in the post about how to do it, if you've not used that method before.
  22. We're trialling a new system on the community which removes the quote buttons from posts and replaces them with a simpler reply button. Using that will mention the user in the post but won't quote their post. There are multiple potential benefits to doing this, including: Cleaner, less cluttered topics Posts which fall outside of the community guidelines will be less likely to be quoted and therefore amplified The ignore function will be more effective When you do reply to someone, the system now also allows you to view part (or all if it's relatively short) of their post - clicking the arrow to the left of their name will show it . As with any change, it may take a little getting used to, so please give it a chance initially. If you do have feedback or issues with it, please let us know in this thread. The quote function is still available if you want to use it - just highlight a post (or portion of it) and click the 'quote selection' button which appears. The quoted text will automatically go into the post editor and can be repeated as needed to quote more than one person or multiple chunks of a post. There's more info on how to quote on various devices here: https://community.netweather.tv/how-to/posts-and-posting/how-to-quote-a-part-or-all-of-someones-post-r5/
  23. You may certainly want to look again at things, but would you not also seek to learn why things didn't turn out the way that may have been expected rather than just throwing out an entire set of theories and indicators? If you just dismiss things as flawed and ignore them if they don't go to plan, where does that end up? On that basis, all the forecasting models would have been in the bin years ago and we'd be back to using seaweed.
