Wondering what the polar vortex is? Have a read of Nick F's blog for all the info

The NMM will pick out more local detail, the GFS is a broader brush, but is still a useful tool.
-
We do use the higher res nmm for the storm forecast (the model doesn't create separate convective cloud in the first 48 hours, it's bundled together within non-convective cloud), the storm risk maps use the GFS which is lower res
-
The models update every 6 hours, and the charts/forecasts follow that schedule. The storm forecasts on the site use our NMM models, whereas the storm risk maps you're referring to are from the GFS, so they will be different (the NMM is higher resolution).

Netweather's quote in the Expresses latest
Netweather said there is likely to be a “cold heart†to winter this year with above average snowfall in parts and frequent winter storms. Its long-range winter forecast states: “A cold heart to the winter with January likely to be colder than average due to an increased likelihood of an SSW (Sudden stratospheric warming) occurring. “Precipitation close to or slightly above average overall. “Tendency for storm tracks taking a more southerly route across the UK -therefore potential for a significant wind event affecting the bulk of the UK. “Above average hill snow for Scotland.â€
Which is a direct quote lifted from the prelim-winter outlook page.
