  1. I signed up to this forum 7 years ago we was gripped by wintry weather and in that time ignoring BFTE which only lasted 5 days no extended cold, there has been no prolonged cold spell or real cold since. It is really dawning on me how rubbish it has been for extended period of time. Something needs to change in 2020s.

Being an island does not help our chances and where we are.  The British Isles and Ireland would have to be pushed further away from the European continent and be pushed further north, nearby Iceland.

Or the following conditions will greatly improve our chances:

The Icelandic volcanoes need to erupt all at once.

There needs to be a very early and intense sudden stratospheric warming event taken place in early November. It has to be strong enough to obliterate the polar vortex winds.

There needs to be 31 foggy days or nights and 31 frosty or nights in October.

There has to be intense Northern blocking over Scandinavia.

There has to a weak El Nino event.

We need to be in an easterly Quasi biennial oscillation.

There needs to have been a strong Atlantic hurricane season.

The North Pacific waters between Alaska and Russia need to be much colder and that the cold water will need to spread throughout the whole of the North Pacific ocean. It would help if there were sea ice covering the North Pacific.

There needs to be a North Atlantic tripod in May.

There needs to a very rapid progress of snow cover in November that fills the whole of Scandinavia and Russia by the first or second week of  November and keep on increasing throughout the month of November into Eastern Europe.

The jet stream should be go far south to the Mediterranean Sea/North Africa.

We also need to be going out of Solar minimum.

Better still there should be sea ice from Northern Iceland to Southern Denmark.

      Hi Daniel,

Yes, just down the road from you in Lee at the southern end of Lewisham Borough. We had to have 2 Fans, yes TWO, trying to cool our Bedroom down. It wasn't until that weak cold front moved through that it felt a bit more comfortable, about 3 AM or so. Had to come downstairs at 11 PM and sit under our lounge Fans (2), for a while. So pleased to see a cooler spell of weather ahead for a week or so. Really hope July doesn't turn out like last year, as I ended up in Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup, with heat exhaustion.

      Regards,

      Tom.  :hi:

      Hi tom,

Yes I couldn’t sleep until around 3 it was utterly horrid today was much more manageable nice w’ly breeze, them uncomfortable nights are seen every summer never look forward to them. And while you’re not far from me, with my closer proximity to central London UHI is even more intense.. it makes you long for cold cosy winter nights. One young girl I assisted on street I suspect she came down with heatstroke, she was in a right state poor thing.

  9. Nothing so far can beat feb warm spell that was truly exceptional...

Expecting to see a cooler and wetter spring the joys of U.K. climate 2018 was an anomaly but I’m sure things are becoming less changeable and more boring... yep I follow someone from Saskatoon some very cold temperatures this winter a rise to -20c is a “warm up”.

  19. This recent weather proves why I detest this month ever dwindling daylight and mild. Wake me up when it’s over!

My fave Novs are when they crisp and dry like 1993 and 2016 and my worst Novs are mild and Atlantic driven like 2009 and 2015.  Nov 2018 so far is in the middle ground but I've got a bad feeling the Atlantic mush is going to win out. The thing that I really like about Nov is getting ready for Christmas.

I quite liked last year's as well but 2015 is definitely first prize for disgusting! At least 2009 wasn't as sickeningly mild and had a lot of convective weather and thunder, at least down here.
