  1. As many have said, gusts of 60mph or higher happen every winter, but there is usually a window of peak gusts, on a squall line for instance,  that last a hour and blow through (literally).   Storm Isha has window as long as 8 hrs. Ive a feeling quite a few trees will be toppled from continual gusts over such a long timespan. Quite a few covered scaffolding structures may also topple as the act like large sails. We wait to see.

  2. We are several days away from the LP system approaching these shores and it'll only be 24 - 48hrs (possibly even 12 hours) from it reaching us that a more accurate track will be known and until then it will fluctuate around on every run. History shows us that as we get closer to the day the systems tend to move further south. It may miss us altogether, unlikely i think, but that would just enforce the cold.

I'm sure somewhere in the UK will end up in the sweet spot, but it is unlikely that everyone will end up with 40-50cm's in their street. If it does this forum will meltdown and the heat from the servers may actually show up from satelite !

Wasn't the switch over to much colder weather always beginning around the 14th/15th of Jan and after that we have different ideas on the table?

The 14th/15th is when the much colder conditions (ice days) are forecast to supposidly filter across the UK, until then we have a week of cooling taking place. The old addage is get the cold in and the snow will follow, i'm sticking with that for now.
