February 1961-April 1961 was exceptionally mild but at the start of the April 1961, there was a brief wintry snap that brought snowfalls to parts of the UK. In a number of places, it was the first snowfall of the year and at Nottingham, it was the first snowfall since February 1960. It reminds me of what happened around the 7th/8th February of this year.

Worryingly Wet & Worryingly Sunless
Weather-history replied to SunSean's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
The sea level pressure anomaly chart since the start of September 2022 to current. Over 2000mm for the EWP in that 19 month period....and that includes a month (Feb 2023) that recorded only 16.5mm. -

Scorcher Contrast this with highly blocked July 1995-March 1996 period. I think there were about 100 days where our region recorded 0.00m of rainfall There have only been since 6 such days since the 14th June last year -

We need to break out of this god awful wretched pattern, this has been going on for 9 months with only brief breaks, the sea-level and 500mb anomaly charts from start of July last year to 28th March. . Horrific!!!!! -

Worryingly Wet & Worryingly Sunless

July 2023-June 2024 total for the EWP is going to be something if this keeps up. If an annual total was to record the same as the current July 2023-to now total, it would put that year in the top 20 wettest years on record and we still have three months to go. -

Going to be another snowless March for my area. Since the frigid March of 2013; Marches 2014, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021 and now 2024 were snowless. March 2022 had just a few flakes falling right at the end of the month, Even before March 2013, Marches 2009, 2011 and 2012 were snowless. I don't recall seeing falling snow during March 2010.

Good Friday 1987 was a superb day, remember that well, it was a better day than bulk of the days during the following summer.

Pretty much a huge bust for many across the world considering the hype. Did anywhere get a decent display? -

A really potent frigid NEly hit the UK around the 24th-26th March 1898 brought what turned to be the severest wintry spell of 1898, nationwide. Comments from that period Addington: Strong gales blew on the 24th, 25th, 26th with showers of snow which formed great wreaths by the sides of hedges. Bury St Edmunds: Snow storms set in on 23rd and continued for 5 days. snow plough was used on the roads on 25th. Cheltenham: a blizzard Haslemere: Gale with snow, 8ft deep snow drifts in hollow lanes Lexden: First snow to lie this winter Ross, the Graig: Strong gale and violent squalls of snow Tenterden: 4/5 inches of snow at night London 24th March: 33°F, 30°F 25th March: 36°F, 33°F 26th March: 36°F, 35°F Manchester 24th March: 40°F, 34.2°F

Another burst of spring warmth during the exceptionally warm February-May 1945, this time centred around 23rd/24th March. I noticed that wartime restrictions on weather data being released in newspapers immediately after an event was starting to relax as it was clear the war in Europe was soon to come to an end. Temperatures 23rd March Bath: max: 67°F Birmingham: 69°F Blackpool: 67°F Coventry: 67°F 10.5hrs of sunshine Edinburgh Royal Observatory: 68°F Glasgow, Springburn Park: 71°F 9hrs of sunshine Harborough: 66°F London: 73°F Lochaber: 69°F Manchester: 67°F 10.1hrs of sunshine Plymouth: 62.3°F West Kirby: 66°F 10hrs of sunshine 24th March Edinburgh Royal Observatory: 65°F Glasgow, Springburn Park: 66°F 7.3hrs of sunshine Lincoln: 69°F Manchester: 68°F 7.9hrs of sunshine Ullswater: 67°F
