  2. This is the equation I devised to measure the "wintriness" of a winter. 10 x [(the number of days with lying snow)+(number of days with falling sleet/snow)+(number of days where the temperature has been at below 0C)] divided by the mean maximum temperature. At the moment it is just 7. I have only recorded 3 air frosts since the 1st December. I saw falling snow for the first time last Tuesday (11th February) This winter has been an absolute shocker for wintriness. Even 1988-89, I saw lying snow at the back end of February, I saw lying snow during 1989-90. In 1997-98, I saw lying snow at the start of December. This winter, nothing except slight patchiness from Tuesday's brief fall. Looking at the charts, snow and frost prospects look extremely limited at best. Least wintriest winters of recent times 2013-14: 7 up to 17th February 1988-89: 20 2006-07: 21 1997-98: 25 1974-75: 26 1989-90: 26 1973-74: 30 1987-88: 37 2007-08: 37 1991-92: 40 1975-76: 41 1999-00: 42 1992-93: 43 2002-03: 44 1994-95: 45 1998-99: 47 2004-05: 47 2011-12: 47 2001-02: 50 2003-04: 50
  3. Our Northern Irish, Welsh and SW members will remember this well as it gave some heavy snowfalls on this northerly flow Did see some snow from this.
  4. Manchester Winter Index is heading for its lowest ever value. I have lived through some winters devoid of much wintriness but never too this level. What has compounded it was the lack of wintriness during the autumn. There were a few frosts in November but that was it. About 11 frosts since the start of November is really low.

  8. Or was this winter to make up for last summer?I don't believe in weather auditors. It could be just a bog standard summer.
  9. Nothing unusual in the fact that we have wet and dry cycles, it is the intensity in particular the wet cycles at the moment that have been unusual. Was March 2010-March 2012 that dry? I'm sure April 1995-April 1997 was even drier.
  10. Classic Fohn set up with low pressure to the NW of UK, high pressure to the SE of UK and the UK under a broad tropical maritime SWLy airstream Maxima recorded 17.4C. Llandudno 16.5C. Orleton 15.4C. Camden Square 15.1C. Leicester 14.8C. Mansfield 14.7C. Cardiff 14.4C. Manchester 14.4C. Dublin
  11. The emoticon used is a big clue. My observation is on the emoticon.-----> It ain't a shock. If it was showing 10C 850hpa and maxima in the high teens maybe. With this winter, if it was showing high pressure sat over the UK. Definitely!!!
  12. I don't know why you are hyping this up. It is certainly mild but nothing out of the ordinary to be honest but more importantly it is not dry. And this is the most important factor here. We need a decent anticylonic spell and there isn't any.
  13. It's hard to believe that a centre of high pressure last sat over some part of the British Isles was the start of December about 10 weeks ago. This winter must be up there with being one of the most cyclonic winters even seasons on record and there is no sign of high pressure having total control over our weather right to the end of the meteorological winter. Last occasion I can recall such a prolonged cyclonic spell is autumn 2000.

  15. About 388.9mm has been recorded in the last 9 weeks. That's about 6.2mm per day.
  16. He did but he was about 5 years out....."The change to Atlantic based weather will herald quite possibly the most remarkably mild January ever seen. An intense Polar Vortex will be in place over Greenland and the downstream High known as the Bartlett will develop over mainland Europe, becoming anomalously strong at times. The mildest January ever recorded was 7.5C in 1916, and that record will be seriously under threat, with a blowtorch pattern setting up with SWerlies dominant. Some exceptional Spring like weather is likely across SE England in particular,as a blowtorch pattern sets up - it will be very wet and windy in Ireland and Western Scotland. This is the sort of chart that will dominate the month:"Trouble is that was in 2008.....
  17. Didn't the Chinese long range forecast suggest a wet winter for this area?

  19. You have made such comments in the past and to be frank, I find it a little disturbing. Surely you life doesn't not revolve around how cold and snowy a winter is? Yes if you are a snow fan it is disappointing but you should not let it dictate your life. There are plenty other things to do, other hobbies and pastimes. Snow should not be allowed to dictate your life.
  20. It was bad last night but I don't think it was as bad when compared to Christmas Eve 1997 and January 2007. They were vicious around here.
  21. Oh for goodness sake, NELyBlast, give it a rest. You go on about cold zonality and ruddy January 1984 and will we ever see it again?I ask the question, "will you ever shut up going on about it?"
  22. It is interesting reading Nick Sussex's analyses in the model thread but what is very interesting is that he lives in France but comments on the UK weather prosects as though he lives here but does anyone know what is going on in France this winter? Has it been wet where he is? Has he had any snow this winter? No disrespect to Nick Sussex but I find it odd that there is hardly if any observation s for his area or talks about weather prospects for his area. I wouldn't begrudge him some IMBYism analysis in the model threads.
