It's certainly not going to be as cold as last night here, temp hovering around -1.7C, but compensated by the snow falling. No idea exactly how much but the driveway is covered again, probably a cm or two. Stood at the back door and what is falling at the moment is really fine grained stuff, the snow equivalent of heavy drizzle. Blowing around a bit too, which could cause even more problems.

Overnight low of -4.6C just before 9am, currently -1.8C, which is the high for the day so far as its on the rise after dropping mid afternoon. Roads on the commute this morning not great. Not overly snowy but the overnight cold had refrozen what was still on them. Better on the way home. No idea what to expect tonight as every forecast is different, and the MetO one has changed several times today already. Radar looks promising, and is either myself or @Scottish-Irish Skiergoing to get clobbered in a bit?

You'd also need to ensure the teachers were employed locally too. I could be at my nearest high school in 5mins in the car but drive 35mins. I probably pass lots of the teachers from my nearest school driving the other way. Most schools close as the staff can't get in safely, roads inadequately ploughed and gritted etc, especially in rural areas. I enquired through my local councillors a while back about whether the council could look at travel distance as a factor when employing teachers at individual schools, more from an emissions, work balance angle but also resilience in poor weather. The answer that came back was that they couldn't as they felt it would contravene employment law (no more detail given). Wouldn't even consider actively asking if teachers wanted to volunteer to 'swap'. There just no lateral thinking in the UK at all. We had a late start this morning by at my school, which helped as I dropped my son at his school for a Prelim. His school minibus didn't attempt to get up past our house, road was white but not that bad. He's now walking home rather than hang about, but that's his choice. I suspect with the MetO forecast for tonight that there will still be lots of school closures around Aberdeenshire tomorrow.

I'd think you'd be fine if sticking to the main roads, just check the radar first, but I don't think there's anything heavy forecast for tomorrow. Unofficially an ice day here with the nearest weather station maxing out at -0.1C. Overnight low was -3.7C, currently -2.6c and on a slow downward trajectory. Wife beat me home from work and had cleared the driveway, but looks like maybe a cm of snow at the house today. Westhill I'd say got more than that this afternoon, as it caught a heavier bit of the precipitation from 2:30pm until at least when I escaped an hour later.

When you travelling? Worst bit today seems to have been South of Aberdeen as that's where most of the snow ended up falling. Mains roads are probaby fine when it's not actively snowing, I got from Alford to Westhill and back today no problem, just slower than normal, wife did the same to Keith and back. Off the main roads it's very variable, some are still quite snowy. Fubar news on Facebook is good for conditions on the NE roads. I checked and there's no mention of problems towards Banff, but some snowy pictures of the A96 near Huntly. It can all change rather quickly though, for the better or for the worse.

Currently -3.7C here, and with a high of -1.7C around 2pm it's easily made an 'ice day', barring a miricle warm up in the next 1.5hrs. MetO app, XC Weather, and Yr.No forecasts all suggest it'll stay below freezing right through to later on Friday (only just tomorrow, with a possible max of between -1 and 0C). Can we make it 4 straight ice days in a row? That in itself would be relatively unusual

I have one, came with the house. Got it up and running 2 years ago with a bit of effort as it obviously hadn't been used for a while, during the second Covid lockdown when I had time to tinker? To be honest unless the snow is really deep it's not worth the hassle, quicker shovelling. It's also only any good if the snow is fairly dry, at all wet and it just clogs the chute constantly. So like yours did, it sits gathering dust in the garage except for exceptional circumstances. Max here so far for the day has been -1.7C, currently -2.1C, but doesn't really feel very cold at all unless you are in a blustery snow shower.

Snow anywhere north of Birmingham doesn't count as far as most in the MOD thread believe. Scotland, Ni, Northern England could be 6ft deep in drifts, with the RAF having to airdrop supplies into villages that have been cut off for days, and they'd still be chasing a single snow flake in Southampton. I can understand their desperation, but if that's where they live they have to reconcile themselves to only very occasionally seeing snow. Glad to report that I managed the 6 mile round trip to Alford and back. Roads have been ploughed but still white everywhere, with snow drifting off the fields in places. Weather warning being updated, for Wed & Thu at least so far.

Some pictures from this morning, especially for anyone from the MOD thread who is lurking, and who said it would be a 'dry northerly'..... Farmer has ploughed the road and the council gritter has been past too, so I might to down to Alford in a bit to try out the new all-season tyres on the car. I need to go to the post office anyway.

Driveway cleared, took 2 of us 45mins. Up to 20cm in places where drifted, average around 8cm. 13cm at least on the cars as they weren't cleared yesterday, I suspect overall we've had around 15cm of level snow since yesterday morning. I have a snow day, wife unfortunately does not so is just going to try to get to Keith.

Aye, as above fit some outside/security lights if you don't have any, one of the first things I did when we moved in here. Mine have an override if you switch them off and on within 10 secs, but they are hard to source. Some new ones have a remote control. None of them seem to last more than a couple of years though before failing.

Snowy dog walk, and believe me, the video doesn't do justice to how heavy it was. Taken after I'd turned around as the very few exposed bits of my face were getting plastered. Not often I cut short a snowy dog walk. VID_20240114_160736838.mp4 Cleared the driveway when I got back as it'd stopped snowing by then, but measured 6cm before it was cleared.
