  1. Bonkers!! I was in Austria 2 days ago - drove for 2hrs through heavy snow from Mayrhofen to Salzburg. No problems on any of the roads, despite laying snow- apart from a few speed restrictions. The only difference is that Austrian/German law requires all-season or winter tyres on all vehicles. Cars don't grind to a stop over an inch or two of snow and most importantly don't block the road for gritters/ploughs etc. About time that all-season tyres became the requirement over here? the argument about all-seasons being unsuitable for the summer is rubbish, with most continental drivers keeping all-season tyres on all year.
  2. Fabulous!!...I'm heading out to Austria for a few days next week -- meeting my son who has just completed an Anwärter course in Kaprun -we're heading across to Mayrhofen for skiing and a beer or two Wednesday to Friday. I've been checking the webcams and the Alps charts plus forecasts on here. Looking Ok for early December and a nice top up of snow currently on the cards for Thursday.
  3. Weather forecasts have always been a big thing in NZ, at least they were in my family! Kiwi's love the outdoors especially sailing/boating and tramping around the hills and mountains. I remember getting up for breakfast my Dad, without fail, would always be there with his cup of tea listening to the NZ shipping forecast on RadioNZ..... RNZ : News : Weather : Coastal WWW.RNZ.CO.NZ You might recognise Dan who used to forecast in the UK many years ago. And then there is the farming community..... On the Farm - a wrap of farming conditions around NZ | RNZ WWW.RNZ.CO.NZ Bay of Plenty kiwifruit growers are counting their losses this week after a frost last Friday caused irreparable damage. Central Otago sheep farmers are nearing the end of shearing and lambing is in full swing.
  4. Snow falling this morning down to village level in Kaprun (780m). More forecast to come tomorrow with 13cm predicted for village and 62cm for the glacier! My son is hanging up his skis for the day tomorrow and heading to Vienna for the day to sort out some admin.....good timing!
  5. My son is currently on a ski instructor course in Kaprun. This was his view this morning from up at the glacier. I'm very envious!
  6. Hope the storm hasn't messed up the beach at Cotillo! Planning to head out at Easter.....like you Fuerte is a regular favourite of ours. 10 -15 years or so ago there was a big winter storm that stripped the southern end of the beach of sand - it took many years to recover. Our favourite spot. S End of beach at Cotillo.....
  7. Times like this I really appreciate living in a rural location......just dropped my son off at Heathrow 21c, back home now having a cuppa and it's 17c. (7.20am)
  8. Splitting hairs a bit? .....almost attached....
  9. Bit blowy and wet here just outside Basingstoke but not expecting the strong winds until late morning/midday ish. I was in Edinburgh a couple of months ago and took a quick day trip up to Glenshee- only a couple of hours and very scenic. Plenty of snow up there! 10. Thanks, just read about people hearing it throughout much of NZ. I suspect my relatives in Northland may have heard it. Where are you Crimsone? Did you hear or feel anything? Surprised that, given the violence of the eruption, the tsunami alert seems to be v low level. NATIONAL ADVISORY: TSUNAMI ACTIVITY – EXPECT STRONG AND UNUSUAL CURRENTS AND UNPREDICTABLE SURGES AT THE SHORE https://www.civildefence.govt.nz/
  11. The pressure from the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai eruption in Tonga was detected in New Zealand - 2,000 km away! (times are in UTC, so 0600 is 7pm NZ Time or 6am UK time And the satellite shots are amazing!
  12. Good luck with your roof and I hope that the water doesn't cause too much damage!
  13. To be fair ...once they're up in the sky they eventually need to land somewhere. They're assessing conditions at their destination airport and diverting if necessary.
  14. Ryanair flt from Faro just managed to land at Leeds. Malaga flight just about to have another go. I'm not a nervous flyer ...but glad I'm at home with feet up in front of the woodburner tonight!!
  15. Ryanair Malaga to Leeds/Bradford also tried landing but now going around due to weather. Previous flight, KLM from Amsterdam diverted to Manchester
  16. Fabulous!!!.....and we're off .....the hunt for the fabled easterlies and snowmageddon.
  17. All systems go at Chez Kiwi......it's grim outside?️
  18. I clean my own and have done so for many years. Straightforward and not overly messy - I have a woodburner and an open fire - both have metal flues which makes cleaning even easier. Saves £££ with lots of free logs from the many trees in my garden (all set aside in various woodpiles for at least 2-3 years to dry out). A set of brushes will set you back about £40 and there are even online videos to tell you how to do it.
  19. Involcan have just posted some video of the new lava flow.
