  1. Just had an email from my son's sixth form college, Peter Symonds in Winchester. Dear Parent/Carer You will be well aware of the adverse weather conditions forecast for tomorrow. We have carefully monitored the situation, reviewed the risk to our students and staff and conferred with transport providers. As a result we have taken the decision to close the College and move all teaching, learning and support services on Thursday 2 November online. ..........etc, etc
  2. Based on your situation ..... have you considered a future in submarines?
  3. I suspect it'll still be stuck in traffic at Stonehenge!
  4. Unexpected and everyone went to bed prepared for a bit of wind and rain. Unprepared - It's now 1.20am and they're about to be hit by a cat 5 hurricane.
  5. Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill more so. North Island cities milder than UK....I've never seen a frost in Auckland. Queenstown has my perfect NZ climate sunny dry summers and plenty of winter snow for skiing on the surrounding mountains.....my holiday this August .....skiing in Queenstown...Bliss!!
  6. Virgin Orbit have now filed for bankcruptcy. Spaceport Cornwall has sacked almost all staff. ......As this was the only client of Spaceport Cornwall it looks like the British Space dream is dead. Virgin Orbit: Richard Branson's rocket firm files for bankruptcy WWW.BBC.CO.UK The satellite launch company has failed to secure new investment after a rocket launch failed. Spaceport Cornwall's only satellite partner Virgin Orbit sacks almost all staff - Cornwall Live WWW.CORNWALLLIVE.COM The news coming out of the US about Virgin Orbit keeps getting worse
  7. Potholes are horrendous around here. Mrs Kiwi has just punctured her second tyre in as many months - both potholes! I know that the budgets for road repairs have been cut but is the extra weight of electric cars contributing to the pothole problem? Dutch research suggests that the weight and acceleration of electric cars causes more rapid deterioration of the tarmac. "Due to the massive battery, electric cars weigh more than ordinary passenger cars. Because of this bigger weight, not only do the tires wear out faster. According to experts from the Delft University of Technology, the top layer of the asphalt is also likely to wear out more quickly because electric cars have a higher acceleration capacity."
  8. How does that work for the 20% of UK population living in rural areas? Public transport is non existent.
  9. Decent covering in Silchester, just to the NW of Basingstoke. At least 5cm ...when out walking the dog mid morning. Shame that it's now pouring with rain!
  10. Been fortunate up here in the far NE of our area. Lots of snow for the mid morning dog walk around Silchester (about 7 miles south of the magical M4 snow shield)
  11. Sound idea ....But how about Butser hill? I remember lugging my skis up Butser hill back in the early 80s....my couple of runs down were great but the walk up was very hard work in my ski boots.
  12. Vince Cocurullo Mayor of Whangarei "6:30am update Mon 13th Feb 2023 We have had heavy rainfalls last night along with high winds. 14. These additional quakes/aftershocks are causing havoc for rescue efforts.

  18. Looks like my sisters in Whangarei (Northland) and Auckland are going to be getting very wet.....again! Some areas might get up to 220mm of rain. Heavy Rain Warning - Red Period: 19hrs from 9am Tue, 31 Jan - 4am Wed, 1 Feb Area: Northland Forecast: Expect 100 to 140 mm of rain in the north and east, with lesser amounts in the west. Thunderstorms are also possible, and a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is also in force.
  19. Shocking NZ summer continues with torrential rainfall leading to major flooding around Auckland.
  20. Almost self policing! - when it snows....chances are that the abandoned and stuck cars are on summer tyres =hefty fine and penalty points. They seem to manage policing it in much of Europe.
