  3. Ditto here - apart from the short visit to southern France
  4. Re the scruffy blackbird, not sure whether or not the feather situation is better or worse. As to gender, the yellow bill might indicate that it is an adult male. Perhaps the brownish plumage is a sign of a general feather malady. He still is behaving normally.
  5. I would agree that it is probably a peregrine, Nouska. Having researched a bit more online, I think the facial "moustache" is the most significant ID feature.
  6. Typical Hebridean weather over the past few days, summed up as cool, wet, windy but with a few brief moments of wan sunshine. 13C-16C.
  7. Massive crop, but sufficient detail for ID. I think it is a female Hen Harrier, but confirmation would be appreciated.
  8. A couple of pics from yesterday. Hilltop profile Seals off Bernaray
  9. I never anticipate fair weather when visiting the far NWest, and so a fine afternoon yesterday was a bonus, 19C ,and quite balmy. St Kilda from North Uist Driving drizzle and a houlie today - couldn't persuade the dog to go for a walk.
  10. Amber alert: possible aurora. Aurora is likely to be visible by eye from Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland; possibly visible from elsewhere in the UK. Photographs of aurora are likely from anywhere in the UK. Viewing aurora requires clear, dark skies away from light pollution. To monitor current activity see http://aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk. Issued 2016-09-01 20:09 UTC (21:09 BST) by AuroraWatch UK using SAMNET CRK2 data from Crooktree, UK.
  11. I wasn’t aware of that practice, NL, but it explains something I suspected. A few years ago, when barley was being grown in the field which bounds my garden, the spray from a sprayer boom clipped a couple of metres or so of plants along the edge of the fence as the tractor was turning. I can’t remember exactly what variety of plants were there but a struggling young birch tree did give up completely and I still have a little gap in the border, which I quite like and have not re-planted.
  12. Well, Hello.. A nice encounter when walking the dog this evening. Roe Deer are a bit of a menace here, though. I collided with one earlier this year, which was quite traumatic for the deer, me and the car!
  13. One of yesterday's visitors. I don't feed birds during the summer, but weeds can be a good source of food for them. (my excuse anyway ) Siskin
  14. I, too, am not sure about the gender or age of the bird in the original photos, but it did have a very obvious bright yellow eye ring and the base of the beak was yellow - age wise, it was too mature for this to be a gape - the bird has been around since at least early July. In regard to yesterday's pic, yes, that is certainly a male and although it appears quite black, it did have a brownish tinge to the wings. I'll keep my eyes peeled for any further sightings.
  15. I am almost certain this is the poorly blackbird, pics of which I have posted previously. He appeared from his usual roosting place. Photo taken at a distance through kitchen window – so not the best! – but I think he is re-growing his head feathers.
  16. More youngsters have found their wings today. They have been fluttering about the barn for a day or two, four of them, I think.
  17. It’s been a fairly pleasant day here. High of 20C, but a stiff-ish breeze taking the edge of the warmth, plus the occasional sharp shower. !3C up on this location.
  18. We apologise for the earlier false alert (issued 13:25 UTC today) which was caused by a lawnmower creating a local disturbance at our Lancaster site. For more information please see http://wp.lancs.ac.uk/aurorawatchuk/2016/08/23/red-alert-cancelled/
  19. Red alert: aurora likely. It is likely that aurora will be visible by eye and camera from anywhere in the UK. Viewing aurora requires clear, dark skies away from light pollution. To monitor current activity see http://aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk. Issued 2016-08-23 13:25 UTC (14:25 BST) by AuroraWatch UK using SAMNET LAN2 data from Lancaster, UK.
  20. After a cool and overcast morning and early afternoon, the sun appeared around 3pm. Collected a g’son from Montrose station mid afternoon – 23C was very pleasant. The station at Montrose must be one of the bonniest in Scotland with great views of the Montrose Basin and the hills beyond from the platforms especially in the sunshine. It doesn’t really matter if the train is running a wee bit late!
