  1. Have to say, Catch, the sound of geese flying overhead is one of the few winter positives for me.
  2. i've not had the stove on yet this year. It has not been necessary. Actually, I'm thinking about renting a cottage/ bungalow on the Ardnamurchan peninsula in order to escape the Xmas and NY hype.
  3. A well explained blog, knocker, for weather amateurs like me.
  4. This morning at Montrose Station, overlooking the SWT reserve. Poor light courtesy of the Scottish location. Geese numbers peaked a couple of weeks ago at 70,000 and now are around 40,000. Nevertheless, the sight and cacophony of the early morning lift-off is still quite impressive. The tide was high but outgoing and a few mud banks were exposed.
  5. There has been a bumper crop of acorns here too. The Jackdaws and Jays have been hoovering them up. On another seasonal note, there has been the usual influx of Scandinavian thrushes over the past week.

  7. So far, so good. Hopefully these two will survive the rest of the shooting season. They are part of a larger group of eight Red-legs which are frequenting the garden the neighbouring field at the moment.
  8. On the subject of viruses, I would recommend the book "The Viral Storm" by Nathan Wolfe.
  9. Mine's due next week. Never previously had an adverse reaction to the vaccine except for a wee lump on the arm for a couple of days. However, earlier this year, I did pick up something more than a common cold, more like flu, ( I know the difference between common cold and flu btw ) and I am still slightly deaf in my right ear. Whatever it was, last years vaccine didn't protect. I welcome new research into the effectiveness of flu vaccine and the older members of society.
  10. Me too. The trade in rhino horn is quite obscene.
  11. lol, In really cold winter spells, I burn "eggs"a local name for compressed coal dust bullets. They keep the stove burning overnight.
  12. There's some advice on here:- http://burndryfirewood.com
  13. I was just going to reply to HC's post in regard to the importance of seasoning wood. You'll have a good supply next year., or the next.
  14. Same here, Hawsey. It would have been interesting, though, to have seen the red sun and the yellow sky.
  15. I'm not sure what the point of your post is? I have no idea how the latest flu virus will affect the over 65s in the UK, although I am aware of the trial vaccination. I do attend the doc for annual flu vaccination, and would recommend it, but I did contract a nasty flu/viral infection in late May 2017 which had a very debilitating and long lasting effect over the summer. Maybe the oldies should just be wiped out by a global flu epidemic. Should help to reverse Brexit.
  16. 16C here, breezy too, from the SW. Leaden sky and there has been a spit in the air. Non weather related and a moan - Doggie had her first "staging" following her treatment, yesterday ( all's well ) , but it took 75mins to reach Fife from Roslin via the new bridge. And how dark the evenings are now. The next major event for me is the winter solstice.
  17. I'm adjusting to Scottish weather today. A consistent 15 C this afternoon, little wind, and a few nice ? lenticular clouds around.

  19. The synchrony of swans is amazing. No signs of cygnets for this pair though.
  20. Spent a good 1/2 hour or so watching this Heron hunting. It was eventually successful, but I missed the event on camera.
  21. The said patio pond is a ceramic bowl, basically, without easy access or exit for frogs etc.
  22. I had been chuntering on for ages about installing a wildlife pond. The grandchildren clubbed together and bought me a very attractive patio pond complete with plants. It is, however, not suitable for amphibians, so the project is still live. I did have the usual procession of froglets in the garden over this summer, and a few toads also.
