  1. Being reported in today's press that my -9.0c overnight 26/27 Dec is (for the time being at least) the coldest UK temperature of 2014. This certainly surprised me: Having kept records here since January 2001, this is the highest annual minimum recorded over that period, and the first year I haven't recorded a double figure minus. Indeed, prior to this month the previous low was just -6.1c. So despite it being the UK's lowest this year it represents an incredibly mild winter in The Highlands.

  3. Today would have been 4 consecutive ice-days, but the temperature's just reached +0.1c ... Ah well!!
  4. If things stay as they are, it will be the first time for here (going back to 2000) when the minimum temperature has failed to reach minus double figures..... that just might change tonight!
  5. 24 hrs. to 0900 (another 'ice-day') -5.0c Low temp -1.1c High temp 1.0 mm rainfall (as snow) Full snow cover - Level depth 2.5 cm -3.3c Current temp 1032 Mb. rising Calm, partly cloudy
  6. Looks set to be the third ice-day in a row of this winter. After an overnight low of -9.0c, the temperature started lifting around 3am. The early fog lifted and a brief spell of sun this afternoon provided that lovely winter scene of sunshine, snow and heavy frost. But 2014 looks like it's going to be our first winter (from 2000) when the low hasn't dipped into minus double figures..... (and I do believe they've had bit of a dusting south of the border... not sure though as I haven't had the news on!!)
  7. Yes, winter tyres will transform your car. A 2-wheel drive car fitted with winter tyres will frequently leave 4x4s floundering. And they're not just recommended for snow or ice conditions either, but whenever the temperature drops to 8c. For me it's routine - with winter tyres fitted every October and stored again at the end of March. As stated - very under-estimated.

  15. Thanks for that, and very interesting too - a pity really that Davis, with such a sensor readily available, don't fit it in the first place.

  17. I run a Davis VP2, alongside a conventional Met-Office set-up within a Stevenson screen. I find that the Davis thermometer gives fairly accurate readings in the mid-range. However, once we get into the extremes of hot or cold weather, its accuracy drops off by a 1 or 2 degrees and regular calibration becomes essential.
