  1. Friday's expected winds have an associated storm surge risk that is being monitored by the Enviorment Agency. The EA forecast shows a risk along the entire west and south coasts, with a possible "severe" event along the Bristol Channel coast albeit a "very low" likelihood at present. I would expect these to be upgraded if and when the Met Office warning are.

This could be a very significant event should the models be close to the eventual outcome.

I think there's a bit of a misunderstanding here. When @TheLastMinute said Fergie "slapped down a tweet" - he meant that Ian dismissed the tweet that he was replying to - which was calling the Thurs/Fri event a damp squib.

Yes, @kumquat's correct, that's what I intended to say. It perhaps would have been clearer if I had embedded the tweet correctly, sorry.

  3. Fergie's just twitted that MetO Weather Warning for wind has been upgraded to Amber. By the sounds of the reports coming in on here and Twitter, I'm not surprised.

#WILTSHIRE 2200 hrs AMBER warning upgrade to strong winds now being enacted for south of county, effective immediately. Ditto #DORSET

  4. Amber warning for snow S Glos, W Wilts, Bristol, Somerset, W Dorset and E Devon. good.gif

Issued at: 1131 on Tue 22 Jan 2013

Valid from: 1345 on Tue 22 Jan 2013

Valid to: 0900 on Wed 23 Jan 2013

Outbreaks of sleet or snow will affect parts of southwest England and South Wales during Tuesday, extending to other parts of southern England and the south Midlands later. Where rain or sleet is currently falling, this is expected to turn increasingly to snow during this afternoon and evening, even at low levels. Some 2-5 cm of snow is likely in places with 10 cm or more within the amber warning area and on high ground. This could be locally heavy and fall in a short period of time, perhaps just a few hours. The risk extends towards the northeast of the warning area later in the period and persists overnight.

The public should be aware of possible disruption to transport.

  5. Our band for tomorrow forming off the coast of Brittany??

Looking at the MetO rainfall map, I think it may be something to do with it but frankly it all looks very unclear and involves different areas of ppn joining up and pushing across the north of our patch. Frankly, it looks like a lot to go wrong so I'm not holding my breath!

I think we could also have a few more heavier bursts during the early hours. There is a bright echo in the Bridgewater area that looks like it tracking up the M5 with another small area around Exeter following the same path with further patches pepping up in the channel further behind. I've got to go to bed, I too need to be up soon.

  6. I think this tweet from Ian F sums up Friday nicely at present...

"@LittleGardenCom: are we in line for a dump of the white stuff @ the weekend? Have heard yes and no!" It has potential....uncertain

Meanwhile, this little tweet from the Environment Agency caught my eye...

This week England and Wales has seen its driest week since the middle of August. pic.twitter.com/qod6nmCN

  7. Twitter update from Fergie about 20 minutes ago...

W COUNTRY After a temporary lull, more heavy rain will spread north again later tonight with further rain, some heavy, much of Thursday.

4 flood warnings currently in force across the south west including the River Wey between Upwey and Weymouth and the 3 warnings that have been in force for several of the Somerset moors since for around a month. Best of luck to all in vulnerable areas.
