Just has a surprising notification on here, a new badge indicating that I have been hanging around these part for 20 years!

I had to look up what was going on at the time to make me join, obviously it was this.

Can't remember that?...just looked at the historical charts and it was all a bit of a storm in a tea cup, the snow/wintryness he was referring to occurred on this date (chart below)...over in a day job and can't remember any snow falling here - Xmas was of a westerly regime.

I've been on here about 20 years too...joining after the BBC snow watch ended.

  2. It wasn't technically a white Xmas...a lot of snow (drifting) from the 8th to the 24th in various parts of the country, we had about 10 inches or so at the deepest on the 13th (24th coastal parts of Kent and East Sussex saw the last of any light December snow falling)...here in Essex on Xmas day we just had patchy snow on the ground and what was left of the drifts that was slowly melting. The day itself here was misty and rather dull.

As you stated another cold spell arrived in January for a week with up to 6 inches...

Technically i dont think 1981 was a white Xmas ..all the snow of Dec 81 fell before Christmas day from memory and Dec warmed up thereafter ? had it not it would have possibly been the coldest December on record.

Yep! Xmas day 1981 I remember as if it was yesterday (just got the LP Dare by the Human League) and there was patchy snow lying about and still drifted snow in areas but had melted to a degree...the day itself in Burnham was misty and cold but not as cold as previous days so as you say not technically a white one and as said milder up to the New Year.

I have never understood the fascination of chasing something that fails to materialize 90 percent of the time lol

Yes that has occurred to me as well, I swear it's more about the winter chase than the actual occurrence of the white stuff (bit like chasing your dream girl only to know you're going to crash and burn) and are probably still behind their PC's when it's kicking off outside.

We might moan about the Beeb and the Met. Office, but GBeebies is surely setting the bar at an all-time low: 😁

'We might get a white Xmas or we might not' - hmmm I think I'll know which side I'm leaning on and as for bookmakers and a white Xmas, doesn't take a lot for them to reduce the length of the odds even though towards the south we haven't had a proper one since 1970. More Hype! yawn!

  6. Years ago this 'cold' spell we're in would be a standard thing for late November...we've seen so few frosts and relatively cold air in past Novembers the bar has been completely reset. Then again model watching can get your hopes up which was never the case back in the 80's/90's...sometimes wish we were back in those times without all this technology.

To be fair at the time I think there was slightly milder air further north as Atlantic air crept up and around the high whereas the high was centred over the south. (Could be wrong)

The north obviously had the first colder conditions...maybe just a delay of a day or so when you experienced that frost, but as mentioned going by where you live Shoreham I'd be very surprised if there was a frost there.
