Midlands Regional Discussion Feb 2021 Onward
wolvesman replied to Summer of 95's topic in Regional Discussions
Just looked at the radar for the last few hours and realised that we have been quite lucky, the band is around 20 miles North to South, still falling steadily as I write but does look a bit weaker today - for the moment at least. -

Just had our first heavier shower which has left a sugar coated cover, hopefully more to come as seem to be just about in the firing line at the moment. The shower we just had did show they can still have some significant intensity this far West which is good news for all. -

Agreed location of streamers not worth worrying about but falling as rain where they do may be.๐ฎ -

Whilst always wanting to be in the sweet spot for snow events it clearly cannot be the case - to be fair the Central and West Midlands have done well already this year and those in the SE are due a turn. Still hope to see more than a few flakes over the Sun-midweek period and who knows it may then be our turn to be in the right place for the fronts trying to get in later next week. -

Overall I think the Midlands (particularly the further East you are at least initially) looks to be in a reasonable position for this cold snap. Whilst the SE and possibly the SW later look to hold the jackpot winning tickets they do come at a higher risk and we may well end up with pretty good results throughout the week but at a much reduced risk.๐ค -

I cannot remember a year of such frequent temperature contrasts over such small distances. Currently it is a tropical 8c here but less than 10 miles away it is still 3c at very similar altitudes. -

Likewise provided it is anything East of rather than North of NE tends to be quite good for the Birmingham/Black country region - otherwise it tends to be an East Midlands only affair. Does look quite exciting for a few days early next week. -

Despite living in the Midlands I work for a Company based in Hove and prior to lockdown was spending around half my time down there. From a weather perspective winter time is very bleak down on the South coast often wet and windy but with very little in the way of snow or even frost so can understand the excitement when a possible easterly seems imminent. However mid March to mid September the weather is so much better than here with lots more sun and generally less humid weather. So whilst I have had lots of jealous work colleagues admiring some of my snowy pictures this winter I know I will -

So as the temperatures rise and the precipitation gets lighter the sleet will turn to snow - those weather apps are just bonkers.๐ -

Just been driving around Dudley area, the snow line is around 200m but you need to get to 250m plus around Oakham area before it is a truly white world. Even up there settling snow is probably only 5cm or so which is quite low given the volume of snow that has fallen. -

Turned to snow now but still quite wet. Will we get the intensity or cold enough air for it to settle.๐ค -

Can never be snowed out in this country but have actually enjoyed the hint of spring out there today as well. Agree likely trend is Southwards now. -

The BBC Weather forecast at 1.30 made good viewing with snow for much of Saturday and Sunday in line with the earlier ECM although they did say the weather system was causing some difficulties in forecasting.๐ -

Hopefully they will be right Matt but just feel that the intensity will have to be sufficient and long enough to get the ground temperature sufficiently cold as the air temp certainly doesnโt look to be. May be a rapid thaw of any accumulated snow once intensity drops as well. -

Obviously still quite a lot can change re track/intensity for Saturday but it does feel to me more of a Wales/Shropshire hills event, whilst some other areas in the Midlands (more particularly on higher ground) may get lucky I am not expecting a repeat of last weekend. Appreciate some models are saying otherwise so hope springs eternal.๐ค -

I should have started my previous post by saying how refreshing it is to talk about another snow opportunity, seems like one a week this year - definitely a good winter for our area.๐ -

Whilst there is still some uncertainty on the exact track Saturday looks to be quite a marginal event, certainly more so than last weekend. I suspect height will be needed for significant accumulations although at this stage not sure what altitude required but probably 200m or so. May still see some temporary accumulations lower down but track and consequent intensity will be key. -

Started to stick on the cars and grass, but everywhere is so wet so will need to get temp slightly lower to settle properly. Current temp 1c.
