  1. Just got back from a holiday in Cyprus and todays lovely summers day feels nice and cool compared to that. The strength of the sun is truly on another level. The air conditioned buildings and outdoor showers in Cyprus are an absolute godsend, it was 40C+ consistently. Heat like that over here would be horrid!

The sun does set really quick over there at this time of year though compared to here though which was noticeable. The UV levels drop markedly after around 3pm onwards.

I have had a look across website to see if I could find out whether or not there was any lightning about on 23rd May (last month) but can't see anything, I was wondering if anyone knew if this sort of thing was available on here, if it is would be grateful if you could help me find it?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

The met office daily weather report on their digital library and archives may have it

  3. I was only 5 but the storm that “cured” me from being scared of thunder and lightning was in early July 1999. I remember it lasted for hours with really intense lightning. I thought if I lived through that then thunder will never scare me again and It hasn’t! Indeed 1999 was a very thundery summer.

I remember one in July 2002 which must have lasted for about 18 hours, started midday and lasted until morning the day after. I can’t remember one which lasted as long as that before or since.

  4. I can just echo what others are saying regarding this summer. I remember it being warm and humid but also very wet. I did my Work Experience Course in a garage in early July and I can recall working in some stifling days.

This summer Is also the first time I can remember a “heatwave alert” being issued which was around the end of June. I don’t have much memory of August but there were some sunny days towards the end.

We had a brilliant thunderstorm one weekday afternoon here in Leeds with hail and about 2 hours of lightning.  I think that was around May time though.

Better than the absolute shockers of 2007,2008 and 2012 but fairly poor overall.

  5. I was only 7/8 in 2001 so my memories of it are quite skewed. I always thought of this as a decent summer, we moved house at the end of July and I remember it being really hot. I can also recall early July being hot around the time of my brothers birthday. I think the weekend of the FA Cup final was hot too but that was in May.

My memories see it as a good summer but had I been older at the time I would probably see it as above average at best.

  6. Wasn’t around in 1992 so can only compare the last two. 2018 hands down for me. Not just because of the lockdown but we also had the 2 hottest May bank holidays on record in 2018. There was also more variety in terms of storms and it marked the start of a classic summer unlike 2020.

I also remember the weather broke a bit towards the end of the month in 2020, getting cooler.

  7. Quite boring overall but had some decent moments.

The winter period was very dull, can barely remember it but we had a snowy day in March. Spring had some decent warm weather, the end of May in particular was very hot. We had a great thunderstorm on the last Saturday of the month which gave us an absolute deluge.

June was very hot and humid but the rest of summer wasn’t particularly memorable apart from the August bank holiday.

Storm Ophelia ushered in some very warm weather in October but that orange sun is the most memorable aspect of it.

November & December had some snowy spells even if they were short lived, we missed a white Christmas here by 2 days.

I saw a meteorite pass over Leeds on New Years Eve which was unforgettable too.
