  1. Sorry, I am struggling to find a forecast from Ian Penall for Winter 2014/15 - could you provide a link?
  2. Looks like an interesting winter anyway - compared to last year - thanks so much John for your insights. They add so much to this forum - what would it be without you?
  3. That's incredible - you literally cannot see a thing! I remember experiencing some tremendous haars when visiting my bf in Scarborough in the 80s - it could be a gloriously warm and sunny day inland, but then as you approached the town the fog descended and the temperature dropped like a stone. Quite sad for everyone who had watched the morning weather forecast and then driven there for a lovely summer's day out at the seaside.
  4. Oh, I really, really hope not! It's so beautifully spring-like atm, I've packed all the winter coats and jumpers away... Come next October I will be as keen as anyone to see snow but what I want now (and what we all need) are SUNSHINE and WARMTH!
  5. You really made me laugh with that bit about the thermos flasks and tartan blankets - we used to go and see Charlton when we lived in South East London - went quite a few times and only ever once heard anyone chant anything really nasty (and then it was only a few expletives, which frankly were fully justified) - and when he saw there was a 'lady' (i.e. me) standing behind him, he turned round and apologised profusely for swearing! Charlton fans are lovely! OT, sorry - it's a bit of a miserable, grey day here - am looking forward to the weekend!
  6. Fantastic news, BB - hope it keeps getting better! It's certainly been a very fine day here for early March - not quite as glorious as yesterday, but no complaints - so my girls did get a lovely sunny day for their birthday (for the first time since I can remember...) Enjoy the weekend, everyone - this forum seems to be a happy place since the sun came out...
  7. Oh, what a beautiful morning... (breaks into song) - why couldn't it have been like this all winter? Looking out of the window all I can see is blue sky - the birds are singing their little hearts out - bliss. My twins turn 11 tomorrow - hopefully for once they will get sunshine on their birthday. Hope Bluebreezer manages to venture out today...
  8. I really am at the point this winter where I do not want snow - and I never thought I'd say that. Sunshine and warmth are what we all need now. The plants and the birds all think it's spring and I'd hate to disillusion them!
  9. If CanadianCoops wants to pierce his left nut, Tamara, let him go ahead and do it. I really do despair at the level of aggression and all-round chippiness displayed by some in the MOD thread at times. Can only reiterate what everyone else has said on this much more civilised forum - PLEASE don't stop posting over there. Let the sweaty, pre-pubescent schoolboys jostle for position - hopefully you can calmly rise above it and show them for what they really are. I think quite a few of us have given up on that thread this year - here is a much more pleasant place to be, but Tamara's posts IMO are of huge educational value for those who are serious about learning more about the science behind the weather. I can understand them, anyway! Anyway, if the moderator wants to delete these comments, that's fair enough as I appreciate we need to move on - sorry, didn't see that post until I had already sent this one.
  10. On the plus side, because there is no chance of sleeping I have got loads of chores done... at this rate I will have spring-cleaned the entire house by morning!
  11. It really is a very strange night. It sounds appalling but when I went out to empty the bin it was, as you say, almost like a summer night... but with a massive howling wind in the background. We are also hearing a lot of planes overhead, presumably trying to land or being diverted from Gatwick. And... just as I thought it was dying down, it gets going again. Enough already - I need to sleep!
  12. Getting a bit hair-raising outside now! Must be a squall passing overhead. Have to say I'm not really relishing hours of this - think a large glass of wine is in order 'to calm my nerves'... EDIT: Sorry, didn't see Atlantis had just posted exactly the same thing!
  13. Ha! I nearly just made a total twit of myself too - thought the wind had suddenly become incredibly strong and sustained, almost sounding as if it was inside the house, and was poised to post on here to that effect - then realised it was the sound of the dehumidifier drying out this afternoon's flooded basement...
  14. The heaviest rain of the winter here - just got back from Bluewater to find water flooding into the basement... Have sent husband outside to see if there is a blocked drain or whether it's just the drain can't cope with the sheer volume of water. What a romantic Valentine's Day we're having!
  15. Hope you're not feeling too bad, JP - that's always a difficult time, and you are a hero for continuing to post... it's much appreciated
  16. I particularly hate windstorms that happen at night, when I have no idea what the various noises outside are or whether I should be worried about them.... looks like another night with no sleep for me and the cats!
  17. Oh crikey - I've just seen that the MetO website has indeed (as of 4PM) upgraded gusts in my area and are now predicting them into the 60s - quite a bit higher than yesterday. And I'm well inland - it's going to be really fearsome on the coast... Speaking of which, where is Coast?
  18. That's strange you should say that as a couple of people I have spoken to today had exactly the same attitude.... perhaps everyone has storm fatigue? (Not surprising if that's the case!) I would like to reiterate the comments about Tamara and her truly excellent posts over Winter 2013/2014 - I'm sure she is too much of a lady in every way to be affected by the testosterone-fuelled rutting which can go on in the MOD - I really appreciate the time she takes to explain all her reasoning. And of course she has been right in her interpretation - which is doubtless why some are feeling particularly nettled...
  19. Yes, suddenly the MetO are forecasting hail for me too at 3PM - which I didn't expect. Currently the rain has eased off but there are still some massive gusts of wind. Shall be glad when the kids are home from school! Well, they were forecasting hail - it's changed back to heavy rain now - which will it be? Will find out soon enough as it's getting dark again...
  20. I was just about to post the very same thing - wind really roaring now and much more sustained. And a guy from BT has just arrived to replace the telephone pole over the road - good luck with that!
  21. Certainly not a 'leaf rustler' here - the windows are shaking - and the worst is yet to come.
  22. Luke, your easy-to-understand explanations, and the charts you make an effort to post, are invaluable - try to ignore those who have a different agenda - we love you!
