  1. It is sunny intervals in Plymouth today and according to my outdoor barometer, 11c.
  2. Well,it has been a windy old time in the South-West just of late. I have never known a year like it. You would expect to see one or two storms a year, but not like this and in such a rapid fashion too. I ventured down to Plymouth Hoe during one storm and it was unreal. As there are only 15 days of Winter left,is this stormy weather due to continue into Spring or is there to be a sting in the tail like Spring 2013..
  3. So are we going to get anything that resembles a Winter in January and February '14 [in the Plymouth and Cornwall areas/ice and snow/chilling winds etc-etc],as it has been on the mild side so far. Or will this mild air stretch into Spring, followed by what was seen in 2013 - ''another severe cold snap'' ?. 9.4c outside at the moment, with plenty of cloud and a breeze. More wet and windy weather coming in for the next two days. NYD has been forecast to be bloody terrible. I am watching a Channel Four documentary on the cold snaps of 2010. It seems like a life-time ago that that happened.
  4. It is warm-ish today, with temperatures likely to hit anything up to 12c early this week. And we still have insects flying about, which is not right for December (ala the 1990s). Bloody cold yesterday though, especially sat in Home Park watching the footie.
  5. I think those of us in the central areas of Plymouth can count ourselves lucky regarding the snow/frost/ice that has gripped most of the nation over the past week or so,and so savagely does i add. It started raining around ten o'clock last night and it was still raining when i finally drifted off to sleep, whether it snowed briefly after that, well i do not know ?. That cold front from the East has not got as far as us [May be on the outskirts like Glenholt, the Roborough area and heading towards Dartmoor. I see Princetown had a nice covering there]. Oh well, perhaps next Winter we may get a dusting of snow that could be described as a worthy fall....
  6. Well, here in sunny Plymouth it is not too bad tbh. Plenty of heavy rain earlier, but that seems to have cleared up for the time being. I have seen the news footage from up the line and it looks very snowy indeed. The Daily Express are harking on about a nationwide white out of snow and ice, well not down here it won't,as it is currently 9c outside [shorts and t-shirt weather]..
  7. It would be a change to see colder conditions after all this dull, damp and mild weather we have had. The last cold spell from last month did not really feel that cold tbh here,Princetown [and areas] had snow, but then it is on Dartmoor and you would expect that.
  8. Could it be safe to say that the remainder of the 2012-2013 Winter here in the South-West will be a mild affair [as it has been since the Summer/Autumn],or is it to early to suggest that, seeing as Winter ends at the end of February..
  9. And it is hard to believe that at the start of 2012,we had drought conditions....
  10. Still cheesed off with this mild, wet, damp and windy weather.. Just had a look at the Met Office site and they do not see much change, although they think there could be colder and drier weather on the far horizon.. Below is an extract from the Met Office site.. Monthly Outlook Summary No change to wet and windy weather as 2013 begins As we head through Christmas the generally unsettled theme will continue to affect all parts of the UK. There is very little sign of any change in the story either as 2013 begins, with the most likely weather scenario involving a persistent pattern of weather systems encroaching on the UK from the Atlantic. Read on to find out more. Monday 24 December—Sunday 30 December Further spells of rain and windy at times After the deluge of heavy rain and stormy winds that affected many parts of the UK through the course of the weekend, Christmas week gets under way with yet another spell of wet weather for everyone, although winds will be significantly lighter, and parts of Northern Ireland could see some afternoon sunshine. Christmas Day itself will see temperatures reach about the average for this time of year, with bands of showers feeding in from the west, and they are likely to be particularly prevalent across Wales and southwest England. One or two of the showers might just turn a little wintry over the higher ground of Scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland later on Christmas Day, but a white Christmas doesn't look likely this year for most places. As we head into Boxing Day and Thursday, the wet and windy weather is set to continue with further bands of showers for most, and the possibility of a little hill snow for some areas of Northern Scotland. Through Friday yet more rain and some southwesterly gales will sweep across the UK, with the strong likelihood of further spells of wet and windy, but essenrtially mild weather into the last weekend of 2012. Monday 31 December—Sunday 6 January No end in sight! The story just doesn't change as we start the new year, with more bands of rain and swathes of strong winds looking set to sweep in from the Atlantic. At this stage it looks as if southwestern parts of the UK will again bear the brunt of the rainfall, with northeastern parts looking most likely to receive some wintry showers from time to time. Temperatures are expected to be about average for the time of year, or perhaps even a touch below for central and northern parts. To the south, though, there are some fairly strong indications that the weather could be a little milder as January gets under way. Monday 7 January—Sunday 20 January Will we finally see some change? For the second week of January it looks as if yet more Atlantic low pressure systems will be heading towards the UK with bands of blustery showers or more prolonged spells of rain on the way. Temperatures also look to be around average, if not just a touch above. There is still quite a lot of uncertainty in the forecast as we look further ahead into the second half of January, but there is just a sign that there could be some colder and more settled weather on the cards. Next week Can we expect some colder weather for the end of January? Monthly forecasting The weather beyond about a week ahead stretches even the most experienced weather forecaster. Complex numerical weather forecast models from the Met Office and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) are run many times for the month (and season) ahead to build up a picture of the likelihood of different weather types affecting the UK. Next update at 10:00, Monday 31 December
  11. So much for some of those Winter forecasts online that said we [uK] can expect a colder than average Winter. Ok,i know we are only in to Winter just and there is some way to go yet,but this mild spell is forecast for next week too. Would it appear that the cold spell in early December was a flash in the pan [was that the Winter for us],or can anyone care to guess as to if we [uK] will see colder weather returning going in to 2013 and beyond. Cheesed off with this mild/damp and rainy weather we have at the moment. It feels like it did in October and November. It is 11.6c outside right now, with thick mist thrown in for good measure.
  12. Very dull, damp and mild in Plymouth at the moment. 15c outside,60% Hdy and Pressure mb 1019. No rain or drizzle though. Looking forward to this colder spell that will make its way down by Friday,as this mild weather is annoying to say the least.
  13. I wonder how long the cold snap will last down Southern ways, couple of days or longer ?. This mild spell is annoying to say the least, what with waking up every morning soaking wet with sweat from the uncomfortable night before.
  14. It is 16c at the moment here in Plymouth,so talk of a cold winter is too far off as yet, whoever forecasts it. I am expecting a rather dull, mild winter again. Other parts of the UK will probably get some traditional winter weather though, even if it is only for short spells..
  15. i have already started to look at the predicted Winter forecasts for 2012-13.
  16. Man,it is bloody hot. I went down to the Hoe in Plymouth for an hour or two and took my pocket barometer with me,it hit 30c around 1:30pm The Hoe and Barbican were pretty packed out when i left at 3pm.
  17. I have been hearing Chiff Chaff songs for the past two weeks, and they are not due to arrive until march. Anybody else heard any Chiff Chaffs yet ?. It has gone mild yet again,Winter seems to have passed the South by this year, albeit with the odd exception.
  18. Yeah, bloody tourists clogging up the roads on their way to the West Country to enjoy the very mild weather conditions and spectacular storm surges as they hit the coast.... My word,it was rather windy yesterday, and so-so today. No sign of any end to the mild-ish conditions where i be,even though i have my heating on at present.....Local news saying that the current weather is screwing up nature a tad....Flowers still growing that were planted in the Summer,Strawberries growing here and there, insects having a long stay of execution as they fly around.
  19. I live in the Spotlight BBC region,we have David Braine as weather forecaster. He is ex-navy and knows his weather. http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/hi/about/newsid_8369000/8369147.stm I am in Weston-Super-Mare at the moment for the Christmas period. Tis a tad windy today, with rain.....
  20. Aceman said: ''How have you come to that conclusion'' I have not come to any conclusion as to what the Winter weather will be like after Xmas or the new year. All i am suggesting is that perhaps it is a return to the normal mild conditions we are used to after the previous 3 Winters - which may have been one offs and will not be seen for another decade or so. I recall a BBC weather chap stating last year that the Winters of '08,'09 and '10 (early snow and ice that lasted more than a week and beyond) were new trends that we could expect to get used to all over the UK.. Many people have been disappointed to see the mild weather that we have had so far. It was 11c outside on Tuesday night at 9pm. There has been snowfall on and around Dartmoor this December (Princetown). After the mild Winters that we have had over the years,it was nice to get snow and ice that lasted for days on end last year etc. Having lived in the SW region for my entire life,i can recall one or two cold Winters that are up there. 1978 and 1985 were very bad indeed, but there have been more mild Winters than cold that i can remember, most noticably from the '90s and beyond.
  21. This time last year it was bloody baltic in Devon (Plymouth),as was the year before that, and the year before that also. Looks like it is back to the mild winters we are accustomed to then ??..So warm today,i had to have one of these.
  22. Were the last three cold Winters that gripped the entire UK one off events. Will Winters in the UK revert back to the mild weather that we are accustomed to now. I recall a BBC weather forecaster saying last year that cold Winters were a trend we need to get used to,was he wrong with his prediction and outlook.
  23. The last three Winters were cold all over the UK,were these just of one off events. And will it now revert back to the mild Winter weather we are accustomed to ?. Living in the South-West as i do,it was a change to have had long cold spells, especially last year. A forecaster on the BBC last year said that the cold Winters will be a trend we need to get used to,was that a tad wrong of him to say that back then ?.
  24. The recent mild weather throws us back to what we expect of the British Autumn/Winter seasons. Before '08/'09,mild weather was the norm. It was only on the rare occasion that it got cold, and even then it did not last too long. Well,in the South-West region anyway. I have seen insects flying around on many a Christmas Day,i can tell you. It looks like the last three cold Autumn/Winter seasons for much of the UK were possibly flukes, all down to the behaviour of the Jet Stream. Having said that, perhaps the Gulf Stream is slowly losing its strength and capacity, hence the artic conditions of the last three years ?. It has been said that if that were to happen,Britain would get cold Autumn/Winter seasons. It is hard to believe now how cold it was this time last year.
