That's what I keep worrying about, that we'll have a really chilly Spring just as I'm wanting some lovely warm sun which will also help me get over this "winter of discontent", lol!!xx

Yes I must admit that the Meto text update doesn't sound as aggressive with disruptive snow.... it did always say "a chance of" but as seems to be the theme this winter, any chances just seem to fizzle to nothing. Guess we'll have to wait and see on the actual night.... and then we'll be knackering ourselves out to work out Thursday, lol!! Plodding onwards......

It's curtains for snow here now..... like I have literally just pulled my curtains to stop lamppost watching because it seems to have stopped! Any more chances for NE Surrey tonight?!

Well it all stopped here for a time (Ashtead nr Epsom) and now back with gorgeous falling fat flakes again! Perfect timing into the evening too!!

Thanks for the heads up, maybe best to head to Epsom Downs then!

My two pennies worth is that if this thread is the most busy then it's proof that the majority of people prefer a bit of a lighter/less strict approach to model discussion, especially when excited/annoyed and snow chances! @Paul you do a great job and I don't envy you one bit, lol! Anyway, you can tell we've reached that time of year where charts that would've been raved about in past years are a bit "meh, whatevs" lol! But the cold is still showing and as we always say "get the cold in" so I guess we should be thankful for that..... for now!

Beautiful pics! I love pine forests the most! I've never been to Esher Common for a walk but it looks similar to Ockham Common if you've ever been there? Those pines will look lovely covered in snow!

This might be a completely stupid theory considering my still learning status.... I've noticed the Chinese and Japanese models both seem to have called this cold spell and shown more consistency.... we wondered if the SSW was affecting the chopping/changing output of GFS/ECM/UKMO - could it be that because the chinese/Japanese models were on the other side of where the SSW took place that they weren't as confused so much by it?! (This is where my brain drifts to at 11:22pm when I should really be asleep, lol!)x

Looks like we have the potential to be in for some "last minute, crop up surprises" over the next week or so! Meto on board so feeling more optimistic than normal!x

Agree with the tedious winter comments!!!! Whilst I'm grateful it's not been a constant barrage of wet and windy, it's been very benign and I think that has felt worse because we've all been hoping and waiting since quite early in November when a lot of "background signals" were looking really good for this winter!!! Well this is now the best position we've been in so let's hope all our waiting pays off!!! I want so much snow that I forget there even was a first half of winter 2018/19!!!

Anyone else missing the less formal Hunt for Cold thread? It totally get how annoying it must be for Mods to deal with the "kids" when they start sniping/arguing BUT I just wish everything could be back in one place. Surely tweets and Meto/other forecasters mentioned are all still forecasting related which is basically what we're all trying to do and decifer!! Plus, when things get exciting (crumbs it doesn't happen often!) I like some light-hearted jokes and excitement, the odd stupid meme picture and hilarious comments! I would understand the separation of such things if all threads stayed active and busy but they don't! I think this was also proven when the Hunt for Cold was created to step away from the formality of the traditional MOD thread because the latter died a death! I don't have all the answers and I'm honestly not having a go but just putting it out there x

Gah!! The frustration continues..... Meto forecast has also pushed this back again to now saying milder/wetter mid month and the cold spell being the end of the month now..... but I'm trying to remain hopefully of SOMETHING to come our way before the end of winter and we've still plenty of time so let's hope! We also know how quickly the models can suddenly turn and cold weather suddenly pop up from nowhere - and that's without SSW's and other background signals!

If ever there was a time to have bland weather, it's while we all have the happy distraction of Christmas so let's all switch off and enjoy time with those important to us and let the weather "cook" whilst we enjoy the season. Then we can come back in the NY with some hopefully more idea about the results of the SSW and maybe a lovely "cooked feast" to enjoy mid Jan! Happy Christmas everyone and thank you for all the knowledge and fun banter you share on here year after year!!!xx

Agreed!!! It would be great if The Hunt for Cold could include these and the "normal" Model Output thread stuck to just that?!
