Indeed GLTW The UK doesn't need to be a superpower - many countries that arean't or don't try to be (take scandinavia) have a better quality of live than us, and at the end of the day that's all that matters.

We may have enough flat land to house 500 million people, but it would be horrible then, and where would all the food and water required come from?

    3. Evening thunder

Good to see the UK out of recession though.

Sm, I am pretty sure it is a smokescreen though. The tories are simply up to their outdated tricks again IMO. Anyway, enough of my ranting, I'll be hitting the bottle hard if this continues and then waking up tomorrow wearing my rose tinted shades. The UK is still a wonderful place in spite of all its issues, we are a very fortunate bunch. Iraq, Libya, Syria, Japan anyone?

Was that the earliest Hurricane or earliest Major Hurricane? :)

  4. With the MetOffice forecast Days 6 to 30 so subjective with many words suggesting "turning increasingly wintry into next weekend" and "rather cold and tending colder" to the later period being a lot colder. Surely that's not a good sign?

  5. Is it me or do I really like northerlies because the air is so fresh!!??

Love northerlies for the crisp dry air with sub zero dewpoints and visibility to infinity!

      north-easterlies>northerlies>easterlies>north-westerlies in winter

southerly>hp on top of us> everything else in summer.

    4. Eugene

      Eugene

Have to completely agree with bottesford and shuggee, love arctic northerlies for the freshness and beautiful blue skies they bring, northeasterlies sourced from polar regions can be great and so can southeasterlies off a cold france in winter, direct easterlies 9 times out of 10 are pants

  6. OMG!! I got through to the final stages of assessment with British Airways, I cannot believe it..... :O

In January 1971, Llandudno reached 18.3C, so perhaps the idea of sunbathing at Llandudno in January isn't all that far-fetched!

Robbie, Robert, Rob or shall I call you twinkle as we are all friends here. If the Daily Mail causes you so much distress, to the point where you have to include others the answer is simple. Don't read the sodding paper. Better still, remove it as your home page and stick to the Guardian or Times. Then again, you're likely a Mirror reader or maybe the Star? Not the same since the stopped the Sport is it?

    4. gottolovethisweather

      gottolovethisweather

The answer is NOT TO READ any of them if what you want is an unbiased look at the world's events. Most newspapers, if not all, are there to entertain us but not to educate us. One or two articles will even grab my attention but if I needed brainwashing I'd watch the soaps. Anyway, anybody had any more snow.

  8. How can one calculate what the temperature would be Mid/Late July in this airflow?

      Robbie Garrett

Thanks guys! So probably low 30's but nothing notably exceptional (except this time of year?).  Does the 850-1000 thickness of this time of year get moderated with the sea temperatures too?

    3. alexisj9

      alexisj9

In my experience, the temp here in Dover is normally between 4-6 degrees below the max temp further in land, so I'd say say the sea temps do make an impact, but it doesn't seem to make much difference how cold or warm the sea might be, during heat waves anyway.

    4. Daniel*

      Daniel*

Yeah Robbie in July the anomaly wouldn’t have been as exceptional still notable however the 850 temps we’re very warm but not hot, hottest temperatures seen in U.K. the 20C isotherm pays a visit a rare visitor yesterday think it was 12-13C uppers at most. What helped achieved 29.1c yesterday was that it’s been quite warm in near continent already we missed out last week so it did build.

  9. My bedroom is sitting at 30*C, just slightly dropped to 29*C... damn!!

    2. Bottesford

      Bottesford

Yep - especially if you have an open stairway rather than separate hallway. All heat from down here goes straight up there.

    3. Evening thunder

      Evening thunder

Shutting windows to keep hotter air out, and closing curtains to reflect sun (as long as the side facing outside isn't too dark presumably)

makes a notable difference I've found, normally our house heats up more but the other day I got home at 1:30 and it was 29c outside, only 22-23c inside

    4. Bottesford

      Bottesford

Yes if I kept windows closed my downstairs would be around 22-23c too. But then I'll open up to get it up to 24-25c so can be comfy wearing not a lot. It soon cools off again anyway.

25c in bedroom right now - skylight+other open window makes perfect gentle through draught.

Well if you look at Munich's average in July it's actually not much warmer than London. I think being continental does allow for more dramatic fluctuations though. I wonder if the nearby Alps have an influence as well, you can get some pretty horrible rainy and cold days in Munich even in summer, as I've experienced myself.
